NEW YORK (UPI) - Mickey
Lolich seemed perfectly at
peace with the whole world.
He wasn’t though.
Nobody would ever know that
to look at him stretched out
there on the clubhouse floor,
completely relaxed with his
head propped up against a full
bag of laundry which in turn
was resting against one of the
green and white pillars in the
dressing room.
All the other members of the
Detroit Tigers were already
dressed and out on the field,
but Mickey Lolich, who would
pitch the second game of a
doubleheader with the New
York Yankees, a contest still
more than two hours away,
rested seemingly contented on
the hard concrete floor wearing
only a pair of white jockey
shorts and a white tee shirt
which had the word “Kawasa
ki” across it.
“What’s that,” someone
asked Detroit’s ace lefthander,
“a Japanese ball club?”

David English hit a three-run
homer in the fifth inning to tie
Kiwanis and Highland went on
to score a run in the bottom of
the seventh to win the first
Little League playoff game, 4-3.
Kiwanis led 3-0 until English
unloaded his tying blast. The
two teams played scoreless ball
until Highland chased in the
winning run in the bottom of the
seventh.

“No,” said Lolich, without
bothering to move his head off
the laundry bag. “It’s a
motorcycle company I’m con
nected with.”
“You still drive a motorcy
cle?” the guy asked Lolich.
“Sure. It’s my hobby. Some
guys play golf. I’ve been riding
14 years.”
“Ever have an accident?”
“Why Monkey Around?”
“Never. I treat it with great
respect. Nobody has to tell me
my career is my arm. I know
it. Why monkey around?”
“How have things been going
for you generally?”
“Well, I’m seven-and-seven
now ... sounds like a drink,
doesn’t it? ... but at the
beginning of the year when I
was two-and-five, I lost two
games, 2-1, and two others, 1-0.
“Now, like I say, my record
is seven-and-seven, and I know
I’m better than a .500 pitcher.”
“Does the designated hitter
rule have anything to do with
your record?”
“It’s possible. I’m not gonna
say my record is lousy because
allowed six hits, struck out eight
and walked two.
Mike Chapman gave up only
six hits. The Kiwanis hurler
fanned nine and walked five.
Besides his key homer,
English also singled. Gilreath
hit a double and single for High
land and Johnny Neel hit two
singles.
Gary Peurifoy ripped four
singles for Kiwanis. Russell
Thomas had a double and
single, John Dupree doubled
and Mike Chapman singled.

Mickev Lolich on DH rule
of that alone though.”
“What do you think of the
rule?”
“I don’t like it.”
“Why not?”
“It’s hurting us,” said Lolich,
lifting his head off the laundry
bag. “It’s putting a tremendous
strain on us. You gotta go nine
hard innings. You don’t get any
break at all. None of us is
happy with it.”
“Specifically, how do you
figure the rule hurts you?”
It’ll take a little while, but I
can explain it if you wanna
listen.”
“Go ahead.”
“Let’s take a normal game,”
Lolich said. “A pitcher will
come up twice. Let’s not call
him an easy out, but he’s an
out man. The third time up,
they may pinch hit for him, and
generally you’re gonna get the
pinch hitter out. Okay, let’s go
to the No. 8 man now. Without
the designated hitter in the
lineup, he’s gonna swing at bad
pitches because he knows he’s
followed by the pitcher. So now
he’s an out man. That means

you’ve got yourself six outs, or
two innings. Spread those six
outs over a ball game and it
really comes to more than two
innings. Before this new rule
you could come up with four
easy innings sometimes, and
that meant you only had to
pitch five hard innings. Not
now anymore. With the rule,
the pitcher doesn’t get a break
at all anymore.”
“The rule will keep some
players around, and some
people feel that’s good for
baseball. They also feel it
produces more hitting and
that’s good, too.”
“Yes, it’s good in that sense,
but overall I don’t think it’s
good for baseball,” said Lolich.
“Why?”
“I think it takes the fun outta
the game for the fans. A lotta
the suspense also. You know
the grandstand managers are a
big part of the game. You’ve
seen and heard ‘em when the
manager makes a move. ‘Oh
my God, he’s gonna let him
hit!’ or ‘Do you think he’ll go
for a pinch hitter or not?’ With

the designated hitter, all that’s
gone now.”
Mickey Lolich hasn’t gone to
bat even once for the Tigers
this season. Nor does he bother
take batting practice anymore.
“I don’t miss it,” he laughed.
“My lifetime average, I think,
is .064. That’s about half the
stitches on a basball. There are
112 stitches on a ball. Or
something like that. Anyway,
when you’re a lousy hitter like
I am, you don’t miss not hitting
very much.”
Two-and-a-half hours later,
after the Tigers had dropped
the opener by one run, Mickey
Lolich went out and pitched the
nightcap for them. He pitched
well and his control was
excellent. It was so good, in
fact, Graig Nettles picked on a
Land-0 pitch and deposited it
into the right field stands with
one out in the ninth.
That made the Yanks the
winners, 2-1.
It also made Mickey Lolich’s
record 7-and-8, and a wretched
day all around for him and the
Detroit Tigers.
