Bonanza stops
Highland, 8-3
Barry Kimble, who pitched
Bonanza into the finals of the

The double-elimination series
would have ended with a
Highland victory.
Bonanza went into the finals

Ricky Tucker pitched
Bonanza to its victory. He

Mark Gilreath started for
Highland. The loss was charged
to Jeff Grant, who worked in
relief.
They gave up 10 hits, struck

Braves first baseman Frank

sweep.
Tepedino robbed Dodger cen
terfielder Willie Davis of an
extra base hit with the bases
loaded in the first game when
he made a sensational leaping
out three and didn’t issue any
walks.
Besides his grand-slammer,
Kimble also singled. Jimmy
Harris had two singles, Andy
Steele hit a double and single
and Sidney Stapleton, Ricky
Tucker, Allen Byous and
Theron Cook singled.
Gilreath hit two singles for
Highland. Jeff Grant, David
English, Bubba Andrews and
Tim Thompson singled.

stab of a shot down the line. In
the eighth inning he nailed
Willie Crawford at the plate,
and the Braves went on to a 3-2
victory.
“There’s not much you can
do about plays like that,” said
Cos Angeles skipper Walter
Alston. “He stole a sure double
and maybe a triple from Willie
and that cost us at least two
runs.”
Los Angeles brought out their
bats in the nightcap, rapping 17
hits enroute to an 8-3 win.
Heading the National League’s
West Division with a 49-27
mark, the Dodgers are also
leading the majors with a .277
team batting average.
“I can’t really say I’m
surprised about the way we’ve
been hitting this year,” Alston
said. “We’ve just got an awful
lot of talent on this club and
everybody seems to be playing
well. It’s just a pleasure to
watch.”
One player Alston takes
pleasure in watching is second
baseman Dave Lopes, who
ripped six hits in the dou
bleheader. In his first full
season with the Dodgers, Lopes
is following a year in the
Pacific Coast League in which
he had 48 stolen bases and a
.317 batting average.
“Davey has really done a job
for us this year,” said Alston.
“He’s got a lot of speed and
has done well at second base
even though he was a outfielder
two years ago.”
Lopes banged out a triple,
five singles and a sacrifice fly
in raising his average to .311
for the year.
Mike Lum and Darrell
Evans, who hit safely in his
eighth straight game, provided
about all of Atlanta’s offense
with each getting three hits and
a homer in the twin bill.

Trainer Lucien Laurin sche
duled the gallop at dawn even
before the chestnut colt arrived
by cargo plane from Belmont
Park Thursday. Laurin will
hold his only scheduled news
conference after the workout.
Secretariat, Horse-of-the-Ye
ar as a two-year-old and the
ninth winner of the Triple
Crown as a three-year-old, was
greeted by more than 300
admirers when his plane
arrived more than two hours
late. Numerous photographers
were on hand, despite a request
that Secretariat be allowed to
land without attention.
“We wanted to give more
people a chance to see him,”
Laurin said in explaining why
Secretariat was brought from
Belmont to Arlington for a trip
which probably won’t last more
than four days.
But Secretariat was expected
to add $75,000 in first-place
money to his career earnings of
$895,242. He was an early 1-20
choice to win the l L s-mile
invitational race.
Secretariat drew the No. 4
post position with Our Native
on the inside, Blue Chip Dan in
No. 2 and My Gallant in No. 3.
The last three horses will be
coupled as the field and there
will be only win betting with
the bettor choosing Secretariat
or the field.
Girl golfers finally
gain recognition
ATLANTA (UPI) - It’s been
a long, sometimes tortuous
climb, but it appears that the
lady professional golfers are
finally getting the sort of
recognition they felt they were
due.
Television coverage, SIOO,OOO
tournaments, instant recogni
tion when they walk down the
fairway —and even sometimes
on the street —are now a part
of the proettes’ life. Quite a
change from just a few years
ago when they played for
nickels and dimes in relative
obscurity.
“A lot of the young girls now
coming out on the LPGA tour
will probably never appreciate
what we went through to get
where we are today,” said
LPGA President Cynthia Sul
livan who rates herself as one
of the tour “oldtimers” at the
ripe old age of 35.
“When I first joined the tour

Individual scorers were:

(in 1959), we had only about 25
regulars (there are over 80
now), played in less than half
as many tournaments (there
will be 35 this year) and SIO,OOO
was a good-sized purse.”
It should be noted here that
the year before Cynthia Sul
livan became a professional
golfer, Beverly Hanson was top
women’s money winner with a
total of $12,639. Going into this
week’s Lady Tara Open here in
Atlanta, 21 ladies had already
won more than that this year
with front-running Kathy Whit
worth at the $46,000 mark with
the tour less than half over.
“It’s a great feeling, and it’s
all happened in the past few
years,” said Carol Mann, a 13-
year veteran of 32. Miss Mann,
a willowy 6-footr3, is already
close to $40,000 so far this year.
“I think the thing that I’ve
enjoyed most about the change
is being recognized by people,”
said Miss Mann. “It makes all
the years we struggled to get
into the limelight worthwhile.”
Most of the lady golfers, until
just the last few years, had a
tough time making ends meet.
They had to share traveling
expenses and motel rooms,
washed their own clothes and
were thankful for a free meal.
Kathy Whitworth, the domi
nant figure on the LPGA tour
the past decade, has been a
notable exception. Top money
winner in eight of the past nine
years, Miss Whitworth has
earned more than $450,000 in
prize money since joining the
tour in 1958 —and probably
twice more in endorsements
and personal appearances.
“A few, like Kathy Whit
worth, Mickey Wright and
Carol Mann were making
money even back when the
purses were low and spread
out,” said Miss Sullivan. “But
there were a lot of others who
had difficulty scraping together
enough cash to pay for their
motel rooms.”
There is, admits Miss Mann,
one drawback to this LPGA
prosperity.
“Do you realize that we are
playing 23 weeks in a row?”
She asked. “That’s a lot of golf.
We’ve never tried this sort of
grind before and I don’t know
how we’ll hold up.
“Don’t forget,” she added,
“The average age on our tour
keeps going up. We get a few
new youngsters each'year, but
that doesn’t offset the over-all
picture.”
