Atlanta now has won its last six outings while the Phillies are on a five-game skid. Evans first home run of the evening ruined what had been up to that point a fine perform- the game into extra innings. He was advancing from first to second when a ball fielded by the Daytona shortstop and intended for first base, struck Goodman in the temple from “point-blank range.” Goodman is a native of West Plains, Mo., who played high school ball at Bishop Byrne High School in Memphis where he was raised. Montreal scout Bill Ernhart signed him at age 17 to an undisclosed large bonus. In his first year of profession al ball, 1972 for Jamestown in the New York-Pensylvania Lea gue, he tied the league’s all time record for most assists by a catcher. At age 18 he also batted .241 in 65 games in the league. ance by Phils’ young pitcher Dick Ruthven. Ruthven had given up only one hit going into the sixth inning, when he was touched for singles by Johnny Oates and Mike Lum. He then served up the right pitch to Evans and he parked it in the stands for his 24th home run of the season. “One pitch — one mistake,” said Phils’ manager Danny Ozark after the game “I wish he could have it back. Even af ter that home run, he didn’t let it affect him.” Ruthven, however, lasted only one more inning. In the eighth, the Phils closed the gap to 3-2 as muscular Greg Luzinski connected for his 13th home run of the year. Evans came back in the top of the ninth inning to hit his 25th homer. He now is tied with San- Francisco’s Bobby Bonds. It was Evans’ night in the spotlight again, because team mate Hank Aaron again sat out the game with an aching back. “-L-never dreamed anything like this could happen,” said Evans. Secretariat denied Preakness record BALTIMORE (UPI) — Luci en Laurin was polite but his downcast eyes and frown indicated his displeasure that Secretariat was not given the record in the 1973 Preakness, a mark that would have given the super hourse a clean sweep of speed clockings on his way to the Triple Crown. The Maryland Racing Com mission conceded Tuesday that the Meadow Stables colt “might have run the Preakness some what faster than record holder Canonero II.” But the five-member commis sion refused to change Se cretariat’s official time of 1:54 2-5, saying it “is bound by its rules and regulations which provide that the official time of any race is that which is locked by the official timer.” “If they had changed the time it would have been nice,” said Laurin, trainer of the horse. “But it doesn’t change Secretariatr-he’s still a win ner.” The commission agreed to the special review of the Preakness time at the request of Mrs. Helen Tweedy, Secretariat’s owner. Controversy developed when the official time for the race was lowered from 1:55 by track stewards due to an electronic timer error. Griffiiiites in tourney Jimmy Jordan and Eddie Parker of Griffin are par ticipating in the invitational tennis tournament at the Cline Tennis Center, on the Oxford College Campus, Oxford, Ga. The tournament started July 9. Charles Burnett, head of the Department of Physical Educa tion at Oxford College, is direc tor. Schwartz, working independent ly in the press box, reported 1:53 2-5 clocking that would have broke Canonero H’s 1971 record run of 1:54 even. “I was pleased that the commission agreed to a hearing in such a friendly and dignified way,” said Mrs. Tweedy. “I felt asking for a review was not a protest The official time was changed once and two other sources maintained different times. We wanted all four sources looked at.” She said she was “perfectly happy to abide by the decision.” A decision to lower the winning time would have meant the first sweep of Triple Crown records by a single horse. As it was, Secretariat was the first Triple Crown winner in a quarter century, breaking the Kentucky Derby record in 1:59 2-5 and winning the Belmont Stakes in 2:24. But the commission in its ruling said “to change the records established by the official timer because of later electronic analysis of such events would be destructive of the integrity of all sporting events.” It did, however, indicate that it might change the track’s timing procedures. The Visu matic timer was found in error two days after the race when official Pimlico docker E. T. McLean Jr., said he timed Secretariat in 1:54 2-5, prompt ing the change by the stewards. for Second Baptist Youth. Tony Head hit a home run and triple.
