Shirt company sued
MACON, Ga. (UPI) — Four former employes of the
Manhattan Shirt Co. have sued the firm for $2 million,
charging that it maliciously accused them of stealing
shirts.
The four, who were cleared of the charges, filed the suit
in U.S. District Court here with Americus Mayor Frank
Myers as their attorney.
They charged Manhattan with malicious prosecution,
false imprisonment and invasion of privacy.
The shirt firm had charged the men with taking
company products for their own use. The charges against
three of the men were dismissed and the fowth, John
Moore Jr., was acquitted in a jury trial.
The company made the charges last year.
Wants budget curbs
WASHINGTON (UPI) — Rep. Bo Ginn, D-Ga., Tuesday
proposed a constitutional amendment to force the federal
government to live within its budget.
The amendment would require the government to spend
only the amount that “shall not exceed the net amount of
revenue received by the government during that fiscal
year.”
Ginn warned that the United States, unless it curbs
spending, faces what could be “the greatest taxpayers’
revolt in history.
“I see no reason why the government cannot live within
reasonable fiscal guidelines,” Ginn said. “I realize that a
constitutional amendment is a very serious legislative
step, but I believe that a crisis situation demands the
strongest remedy.”
Ginn’s proposal allows for only two exceptions — when
there is a state of war, or when a national economic
emergency exists.
Rug shipments up
DALTON, Ga. (UPl)—The Carpet and Rug Institute
(CRI) reported Tuesday that carpet and rug shipments
for the first quarter of 1973 reached a record $755 million,
an increase of 16.3 per cent over the same period last year.
Wendell H. Thomas, director of market services for the
institute, said tufted rugs and carpets, most of which are
produced near here, amounted t 05677 million, an increase
of 16.8 per cent over 1972 and 90 per cent of total industry
shipments.
Thomas said U. S. Census Bureau figures showed the
value of woven rugs and carpets was SSO million, a 12.4 per
cent rise over last year. He said the value of all other
products came to $27 million.
The average price for broadloom carpets increased
from $3.36 last year to $3.49 this year, Thomas said.

Johnson, for permission to keep
Sammy and another elephant at
his 20-acre ranch in Santa Ana

The semirural canyon was

the city law which prohibits the
keeping of wild, exotic or
dangerous animals.
