The New York Mets ace was

sided, 12-2, victory over the At
lanta Braves; ending the game
with a flourish by making Norm

“I learned my lesson under
the late Gil Hodges,” said the
righthander. “One time, when I
first came up to the majors, I
blew a five-run lead by letting
up and wound up losing the
game.
“Since then, I’ve made it a
practice not to let down men
tally, no matter what the score
is.
“The trouble is, like Hodges
told me then,” Seaver added,
“is that once you let down, it’s

Rick Wise was named to the
All-Star team for the second
time in three years Wednesday

When the Cubs lost to San
Diego, 8-5, in an afternoon

Seaver, now 10-5, doesn’t ap
pear confident of reaching his
fourth 20-win season in his sev
enth major league year.
“I don’t think I’ve ever gone
this far into a 20-game season
before with only 10 wins to this
point,” said Seaver. “But, I’ve
still got a chance at 17 or 18
more starts, so 20 certainly
isn’t out of reach.”
Seaver, who had a 2.44 ERA
for his first six major league
years (ranging from 1.76 in 1971
to 2.81 in 1970), gave up only
one earned run Wednesday
night and has a 2.02 ERA so far
this year. It was his 10th com
plete game in 20 starts and he
has 138 strikeouts in 161 innings.
“I figure if I could go out
there and pitch each time like
I did tonight, I’d be way
ahead,” said Seaver who gave
up five hits and didn’t allow a
