The appointment was made
by Macon Mayor Ronnie
Thompson who recently
received international notice
for purchasing the U. S. Army
surplus armored personnel
carrier for the Macon Police
Department. Thompson noted
the tank cost the city about S3OO
but brought Macon about a
million dollars in publicity.
A resolution was passed
requesting that Governor
Jimmy Carter appoint a
bipartisan commission to study
the Georgia election code.
State Republican Chairman
Bob Shaw noted that, “There
are a number of discrepancies
and ambiguities in the code
which allow irregularities to
occur all too frequently. . . and
we’ve just got to tighten up that
code.”
The patronage system which
was changed in June also was
discussed. These changes in
cluded requiring a clearance for
appointments from the district
chairman. In the past, ac
cording to Nolan Murrah,
national committeeman,
traditional clearance had to
come from the state chairman,
committeeman, or committee
woman. Murrah will go to
Washington this week to work
on what he termed, “serious
problems which now revolve
around our inability to originate
appointments.
Ron Coleman, new GOP black
field coordinator, was present
ed. Doug Epps of Clayton
County and E. L. Ellinger of
Fulton County were elected
assistant treasurers.
Other resolutions supported
President Richard Nixon’s
domestic polices and called for
responsive and responsible
state government, based on a
two-party system.

Where to get
cancer data
Hr /
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
Dear Dr. Lamb — I have
just finished reading your ar
ticle on colon cancer
I had an adenocarcinoma
removed from my colon (and
half of the colon) this year,
and I found your article very
interesting
I am writing for some infor
mation.
What is cancer? What are
the theories behind the cause
of cancer? These are some of
the questions 1 have been ask
ing ever since my operation
and no one will tell me the
answers. They say 1 should
forget it Don t be morbid —
don’t get depressed
Just between you and me. I
feel I should know the an
swers to these questions and
probably many more
Dr Lamb, where can I get
the answers to my question? I
want to know about cancer in
general, and mine in particu
lar My doctor says there are
no publications dealing with
the subject Somehow I just
cannot agree with this. Will
you help me obtain this infor
mation 9 Thank you
Dear Reader — Doctors
have different opinions about
how much their patients
should be informed I have
always perhaps erred on the
side of thinking that the more
the patient knew, usually, the
better off they were. Particu
larly if they wanted to know
Many doctors don’t'think it’s
wise to tell a patient that
he has cancer. This doesn’t
apply in your case according
to your letter since apparently
you already know that you
have one and what has been
done
You can obtain information
from the American Cancer
Society. Inc.. 219 East 42nd
Street. New York. N.Y. 10017
One of the purposes of the
society is to provide informa
tion and help to patients with
cancer.
Cancer, basically, is an ov
ergrowth of normal cells. For
some reason the normal
growth mechanism just goes
wild and the types of cells
that are produced do not have
normal organized structure,
although they will represent
the tissue from which they
sprang In other words, a can
cer of the liver will be com
posed of cells that resemble
normal liver cells Cancer of
the lungs may represent lung
cells with unusual characteris
tics that have suddenly devel
oped an over-growth pattern
These cells can then become
dislodged and spread to other
areas of the body. A good
pathologist can still tell by
looking at the tissues where
the cancer started, even
though the cells may be locat
ed within some distant place
in the body.
There are numerous theo
ries as to what causes cell
growth to suddenly go wild
Certainly irritants are one.
and a good example of this is
the theory that cigarette
smoking irritates the lungs creased likelihood of cancer,
and stimulates the formation Obviously I can’t answer all
of lung cancer, particularly in of your questions in this short
