POLLY’S POINTERS
Driveway Tire Marks
Are Hard to Remove

r Polly’s Problem—
DEAR POLLY — Can some reader tell me how to
remove rubber tire marks from my concrete drive
way? They were put there when I attempted to put my
car in the garage during the ice and snow we had last
winter. I would like to remove them since the nick
name I have now acquired. Red Hot Lil. is not my fa
vorite. I have tried bleach and gasoline and have even
set fire to the gasoline but nothing has worked. —
LILLIAN
DEAR POLLY — My Pet Peeve is with the makers of
ironing board covers that are too skimpy and have elastic
around the edges that lasts only a short time. This so-called
elastic around the edges breaks into tiny bits when the cover
is washed. Thank you. — HAZEL
DEAR POLLY — If Gwen will rub her mother s ivory
jewelry with cotton that has been dipped in full strength
lemon juice. I think she can remove the brown discoloration
without fear of damage. — MRS. L. J. G.
DEAR GIRLS — Os course, like most products there is
ivory and there is ivory. A reliable jeweler advised me that
both lemon juice and white vinegar are often used for clean
ing ivory but suggested that a diluted solution first be tried
and tested on an inconspicious spot. If all seems well, the
strength or amount of the vinegar or lemon juice, whichever
you are using, may be increased if necessary. For cleaning,
only a soft toothbrush and dishwashing detergent will re
move accumulated grime. — POLLY
DEAR POLLY — I may have hope for Gwen if she is not
able to remove the brown marks from her ivory jewelry. I
learned in Alaska that they use fossilized ivory that has ab
sorbed the earth colors in beautiful shades of brown. I have
a few pieces of this fossilized jewelry and wished that my
natural ivory beads, matched my earrings. I stained them
with brown dye Ivory is porous and does not take long to
tint so keep a constant check for color. My necklace is a
beautiful brown tone that is indistinguishable from my fossil
ized earrings. After drying these thoroughly I sprayed mine
with spray wax and they have the same shine as the ear
rings. This is only suggested as a treatment if all else fails
and the brown spots remain. — JANET T.
DEAR POLLY—and Mrs. K. J—l remove tea stains
from plastic containers by simply filling them with hot
water and adding about two tablespoons of electric dish
washer detergent. I let mine soak overnight.—
MRS. M. C. F.
DEAR GIRLS—I wish you could see how white the in
side of my coffee-stained, porcelain-type percolator is
after such a soaking for only about two hours.—POLLY
DEAR POLLY—I find those cotton-tipped sticks we use
for some of baby’s toilet needs are great to use for clean
ing my sewing machine. They get into the narrow places
around the bobbin and under the throat plate and pick up
lint that a brush completely misses. A tiny drop of oil on
the cotton helps, too.—MRS. W. A. R.
DEAR POLLY—To easily put creases in baggy jeans I
use men’s pants stretchers upside down. The bottoms of
the stretchers are wide enough for the top of the jeans
legs and the tops of the creasers are wide enough for the
flares so no ironing is needed.—STELLA
DEAR POLLY — When a typing eraser is misplaced do
not fret. 1 have found a substitute that may be as near as
your desk drawer. Simply take a piece of that transparent
gummed plastic tape we use
so much, press it FIRMLY x —
over the error to be - e- x'
rased ' and then quickly
remove it. Instant erasure
without hard rubbing, no
smudges and no holes. \ ’
(Polly’s note — Be sure to \
hold onto one end of the tape , \
or leave it loose to have
something to pull with.) he* x.
