Old milk
cans have
many uses
By ALICE MORRELL
Copley News Service
If you are lucky enough to
have an old milk can and are
wondering what you should do
with it, here are some sugges
tions for uses and how to deco
rate.
Milk cans have become art
objects lately, not only be
cause they are scarce and
considered antiques, but be
cause of their simple and pure
line design. I well remember
rows of milk cans sitting at
the ends of lanes to the main
road, waiting to be picked up
by the creamery truck, a sight
rarely seen now days.
If your milk can is rusty, it

We were having lunch. Sev

just wanted to meet her.

She wants to be a star. She
says she won t give her soul

wants to save it for awhile
and give stardom a shot.

must first be cleaned. I rec
ommend a strong vinegar and
water solution, with steel wool
and lots of elbow grease. Go
over the entire can until the
surface is thoroughly clean,
dry in the sun and air.
If you desire to paint the
milk can, steel wool the entire
can lightly to create a rough
surface, wipe clean, and sim
ply paint the entire can with
your choice of color. Your
paint dealer will suggest a
feet 8-inches she would have
fit nicely with such greats as
Gary Cooper and Clark Gable,
but she says today s leading
men are too short.
Her background is interest
ing. too She comes from
Haddonfield. N.J . and went to
Syracuse University. When
she was a freshman, a Jewish
fraternity asked her to be
their Homecoming Queen
candidate. She accepted and
won — the first freshman to
be so honored, she says, in the
chool s history.
Her mother once sent her to
see the family’s Methodist
minister to cure me of my
independence." She says she
found out that the minister
suitable type paint. Allow to
dry for one week and repaint a
second coat, again allow to
dry for one week.
To paint Pennsylvania
Dutch designs, first draw or
copy designs on tracing pa
per, adjust to the size you de
sire to fit the can. There are
many books available in the
library to give you ideas, or
better yet make up your own.
Trace your design on the
can. To paint I suggest artist
oils in tubes, although you
may decide on acrylics (for
quick drying). Paint the basic
design in color and allow to
dry, then add shadings. Try
ing to shade before the first
coat is dry tends to smear
(unless you are a profession
al), so paint only one shade at
a time and allow to dry before
adding more paint. This tech
nique keeps colors bright and
prevents muddying. When
your decorating is finished,
allow to dry for several
weeks.
When all the paint is thor
oughly dry paint on antiquing
glaze of your choice (I prefer
a dark sable shade), allow to
set for several minutes then
gently wipe away excess, with
a soft cloth and dry brush. Be
sure to wipe in only one direc
tion, either up and down or
around the can as you desire.
Allow to dry completely. To
complete your project, apply
one coat of low-hister varnish
and allow one week for drying
before use.
This may sound like a long
process, but it is well worth
the effort when you see the
finished result.
Milk cans may be used as
floor lamps, dried weed con
tainers, umbrella stands,
flower pot holders, stools,
table base, junk containers
and retirement banks. More
on milk cans next week.
Experiment and have fun.
