Gordon Junior College will teach college students how to
give instruction in recreation when the school begins its
two-year degree program in recreation this fall. Denzil
Davis, Gordon student from Forsyth, shows Barnesville
youth Danny Turner how to field a baseball, as a part of
the practical experience requirement to obtain the junior
college degree.
Gordon to offer
recreation major
BARNESVILLE—Have you
ever wanted to teach games to
children? Or maybe you’ve
thought about working with
young people playing at a camp,
or at the YMCA or the Boys
Club. How about coordinating
park activities?
Beginning in September,
Gordon Junior College will offer
a major in recreation to train
persons interest in developing
skills in the organization,
development and personal
leadership of specific
recreation activities. The
Associate Degree, recently
approved by the state’s Board
of Regents, will be a two-year
career program headed by
Coach Stan Aldridge.
According to Coach Aldridge,
the program will also include
areas related to recreation
activities, such as arts and
crafts, sports and athletics,
aquatics, dramatics, music,
dance, social recreation and
camping.
“I think we have excellent
facilities for training the
recreation major, including two
state parks, a college-owned

He also said the students will
have practical work experience
as a part of their training.
“During each of their last three
quarters, students will work in
the recreation field, with at
least two of these quarters
concentrating on different types
of recreation,” he explained.
Acting Dean of the College
Dr. James Strickland, said,
“We are extremely pleased to
add a new career opportunity in
the area of recreation to our
curriculum. With more leisure
time becoming available to
more people there is of course a
need for professionals to
provide recreational activities
in a number of capacities.”
Dr. Strickland emphasized
that a particular need exists for
professionals in state parks,
city recreation programs,
private camps and other places
of leisure time. “We feel this
program will provide excellent
training for such profession
als.”
Only five other junior colleges
in the state offer a similar
course of study. Gordon an
ticipates an enrollment of ap
approximately 30 students in
i the recreation major program
the first year.
Personal
Dating can be expensive
By PAT and
MARILYN DAVIS
Copley News Service
Dear Pat and Marilyn:
My problem is finances.
I’ve discovered that dating
can indeed be expensive. I
have been out of college one
year and make an average
salary. One evening can
easily put a $25 to S4O dent in
the budget.
What I am getting at is this
— why can’t the girls pay a
part of the expenses?
Wouldn’t it fit right in with the
women’s liberation bit? And it
might even impress them
with the cost of the luxurious
dating pattern demanded by
some.
All for Going Dutch
Dear Dutch:
I can see that the devalu
ation of the dollar, with its
shrinking purchasing power,
can be catastrophic to your
wallet. If you can find girls
who agree with you, all is
well. If you can’t, I’m afraid
you’ll be forced to pick up the
tab.
Dear Pat and Marilyn:
I have a problem. I’ve gone
with John for a year and my
mother is genuinely dis
turbed. She likes John and the
only thing that upsets her is

Dear Pat and Marilyn:
I have read the letter from
Friendless and I agree with
your answer; however, I
would like to add my experi

others.
Dear Friendless — You say
you have no friends because
you refuse to smoke or take
drugs and you say you could
have many friends if you used
drugs. You are wrong. If you
take drugs, you won’t have
any true friends.
I went through the same
thing you are going through
when I was in the Bth grade
except that I didn’t refuse for
long. I got myself deep into
drugs. I won't give the details,
but it was very bad. I made
things very difficult for many
people, especially the ones
who really cared about me. I
brought misery and sadness
to myself and others. My
mother found out that I was
using drugs, and I hope that I
never again see the tears and
terrible sadness that were in
her eyes. There were times
when I really needed help but
