Girls Are
Forgetful
Why is it women are far more likely to leave things on
trains, planes and buses than are men? One auction of such
left-behind articles, for instance, listed 2,600 ladies' umbrellas,
but only 325 masculine bumbershoots. And 76 women's watches,
but only 57 men's watches. And 110 cartons of female clothing,
but only two cartons of male garments.
Debate continues in that ancient argument as to whether
hot water will freeze more quickly than cold water. No, sir,
it won't. Suspect that notion got started because hot water pipes
when frozen are more likely to burst than cold water pipes.
Recently heated water makes more compact ice than does cold
water, that's why.
BLUE RIBBON
Q. “How come the first-prize ribbon is always blue instead
of yellow or white or some other hue?''
A. Blue was the color of the garter that the lady lost,
remember? England's Kind Edward ID picked it up off the ball
room floor, put it on his own knee, then said, ' 'Shame on any
body who thinks evil of it," or words to that effect. Such
initiated Britain's highest knighthood, The Order of the Garter.
Realize you've heard that tale, but thought some might not
have connected it to why first-prize ribbons are blue
EYE COLOR
“Blue eyes denote the incurable optimistic dreamer Gray
eyes indicate perseverance and wisdom. Hazel eyes accompany
the happy active nature. Green eyes reveal talent and a shrewd
mind. Black eyes, show an ambition for power and a tendency
to be witty '' Such were the contentions of old Ed Durling, noted
authority on eye color and character.
You've heard if not said that expression, "It s Greek to me.''
But did you know it was Mr Shakespeare's Julius Caesar who
said it first?
HEDDA HOPPER
Young fellow, ask any Seasoned Citizen to identify the pro
fession of that lady named Hedda Hopper, now gone A widely
syndicated Hollywood gossip columinist, you'll be told. Correct
It's also a fact, however, that Miss Hopper appeared in well
over 100 motion pictures, in even more than did most of the
famous actresses of your day and mine.
In the lingo of the ancient Norsemen, a “ber" meant a
"bear" and a “serkr" meant a "coat.” One certain batch of
warriors wore bearskin coats. They fought with a most particular
fury. And came to be known as the "bearskin coats" or rather
the "berserkr. ’' Whence cometh our word "berserk.''
Men with big feet and women with little feet both tend to be
fairly easy to get along with. Such is the claim of one Madame
Ludovica who tells fortunes by reading the soles of feet. Will
you buy that? Likewise not.
A climb to the top of most any of the famous mountains such
as the Matterhorn is still pretty tough, but nowhere nearly as
difficult as once it was, I’m told. An accumulation of ropes,
spikes, toe holds, left by the annual platoons of challengers,
makes it easier now.

Burning Lights On Vehicles
Now Have Definite Purpose
The Moultrie Observer
If you operate a motor vehicle in rainy
or murky weather without your lights on
you are just as much in violation of law
as when you do not burn them after
darkness falls.
And if you operate a motorcycle or
motorbike any time, day or night, on
public streets or highways without the
lights turned on, you also are in direct
violation of new Georgia laws.
A cursory survey during the overcast
and rainy weather during last Sunday
afternoon indicated the motorcycle
operators were complying better with
the laws than were the drivers of
automobiles and trucks. Particularly
was that true in our own area.
Several new driving safety laws went
into effect July 1 in Georgia. The “lights
on” rules were among those which of
ficially became part of the motoring laws
in this state.

Mountain
Thomaston Free Press
The eyes of eight West Central Georgia
counties are on Upson.
And every set belongs to parents of Boy
Scouts who will be learning about outdoor life,
nature and a lot of other things at Camp
Thunder.
Camp Thunder is 1800 acres of Upson
mountain land in the western section of the
county and bordering on Flint River.
It’s ruggedly beautiful and highly adaptable
to a Boy Scout camp.
Although Camp Thunder has been with us for
many years past it still is the only organized use
of Upson terrain for camping.
We suggest that it will not be a too distant
day when the mountains of Upson, the shores of
Flint River, either in its natural state or as a
reservoir, will be utilized commercially for the
yearn to return to nature.
The western section of Upson is one of the
county’s richest assets and with a new bent
toward recreation and outdoor life it should soon
begin to pay dividends.
In the meantime, we say welcome to the 600
Boy Scouts and Scouters from all over the Flint
River Council who will be camping at the rate of
> 125 weekly over a four-week period running
through July.
Henry’s Homers
Americas Simes-Recoriier
Because some baseball fans have a
sentimental attachment to Babe Ruth and
his home run record —715 in a lifetime —
Henry Aaron, almost certain to break that
record, has been the victim of hate mail
and depreciation of other kinds.
The irony of it all is that Atlanta Braves’
outfielder is, by comparison, a far less
controversial individual than the Babe, far
more of an inspiration to young people in
many ways.
In addition, he’s hitting the ball at a time
when averages are generally lower than in
former years; this is offset by the fact that

the better idea
I have always felt that I could worship
God in nature. My wife claims that isn’t
enough, and that I should go to church with
her. I say, what’s the difference. What do
you say? J J*.
I say your wife has the better idea.
Seriously, I have no argument with those
who say they see and worship God in
nature. So do I. But that isn’t enough!
You cannot say nature is God, nor a part
of God, anymore than your ideas and
wishes are the real you. Nature is a partial
manifestation of God, but it certainly does
not exhaust God.
Actually, if you permit a bit of
philosophizing, creation is really the
voluntary limitation God has imposed on
Himself. To see that, and nothing more, is
motorists burn their lights during
periods when visibility has been cut,
even during daytime hours. Now Georgia
has fallen into line—the only problem
being compliance.
The brief survey of Colquitt county and
neighboring traffic Sunday evening
showed about one of every ten local
drivers was following the law with
reference to lights. It was nearly reverse
of this among the motorcycle operators.
The “lights on” regulations are
designed for safety. They make common
sense.
Most of us are apt to forget the new
rules. Perhaps we should give more heed
to why an approaching car has its lights
on—or why the motorcycle does. And as
a matter of courtesy and reminder,
possibly we should blink our own lights at
those drivers who are in violation. After
all, it’s for the safety of all of us who
drive and ride.
he plays more games in a season. But one
suspects Aaron will break Ruth’s record
by such a margin that comparisons will
become meaningless.
All records are made to be broken, and
Aaron won’t be the last to break Ruth’s
mark (he has 696 homers as this is writ
ten). But Aaron will be one of the most
modest players to do it. The Babe was a
great hitter and earlier a great pitcher,
had flair and color and ability. But he was
definitely not the Henry Aaron type, and
there are many fathers who prefer Aaron
as the inspiration for young America.

Paul once wrote to friends in the city of
Colossae (chapter I): “Christ Himself is
the creator who made everything in
heaven and earth. . . all were made by
Christ for His own use and glory.” Now,
there’s the heart of the matter, and when
we see creation in Christ and Christ in
creation, there is a new and exciting
dimension to life.
Dwight Moody, the famous evangelist,

creation to the Creator.

REPORTS FROM THE UNITED STATES SENATE ;

THE WELFARE MESS, growing by millions of people and
billions of dollars, always has been a serious irritant in our so
ciety. It becomes even more of a pain at a time when working
people have their wages frozen and when inflation robs them of
their hard-earned pay.
An overwhelming question that defies solution is how are we
going to reduce welfare rolls, cut down on dependency and in
crease productivity in our country when it is more profitable
for some people not to work for a living?
That is somewhat akin to a question we asked a couple of
years ago about the Nixon administration welfare expansion
plan; that was presented to Congress in the guise of “welfare
reform,” but how can we achieve welfare reform by guarantee
ing everyone a certain income and doubling the welfare rolls?
* * *
NOW COMES a congressional study which shows that a
family of four in New York City would have to earn more than
$11,500 a year in order to be on the same footing with a similar
family drawing welfare benefits and not working at all.
I understand that welfare may not provide the most desirable
standard of living, but I can well imagine some people in New
York and other cities where similar conditions exist saying that
it certainly beats working for a living.
It is no wonder that the average working person grits his
teeth and fumes when he see how the government discourages
employment and makes it unprofitable to work. No on objects
to assisting the needy aged, disabled, blind, or poor children,
but the working man has every right to protest his tax dollars
going to able-bodied people who won’t make an effort to work.
* * *
THE ANSWER, AS I SEE IT, is to guarantee employment
opportunities instead of guaranteeing incomes. That has been
my goal on the Senate Finance Committee, which handles wel
fare legislation, for as long as I can remember.
In the last Congress, I secured adoption of legislation to beef
up the work incentive program and increase employment op
portunities for welfare recipients. That has been the only wel
fare reform legislation to come out of Congress in recent years.
The object of my bill is to get people off welfare rolls and
onto payrolls. When we can train more unskilled people for
jobs and get them off debilitating welfare, that will be real
welfare reform.
It will strengthen and bring dignity to the people involved,
and it will make ours a stronger nation, economically, socially,
and morally.

Cottonseed, new wonder food
First came soybeans and then algae and now it s cotton
seed science tells us may be the world s salvation from
threatened protein famine.
Yes cottonseed, which has long been widely used as an
inexpensive feed for livestock but contains a substance, gos
sypol. which does not agree with one-stomach animals or the
human type.
But now. according to a New York Times report, the Agri
culture Department s Southern Regional Research Center in
New Orleans has developed a process to remove the gossypol
and produce a palatable cottonseed flour 60 to 70 per cent
pure protein, far richer than expensive meat and fish <l6 to
20 per cent i and even topping currently scarce soybean flour
(50 per cent).
In addition to being so protein rich, researchers say. cot
tonseed flour has the added advantage of a bland taste that
should make it more acceptable than soybeans and other
familiar substitutes.
At first, cottonseed is likely to edge into diets as an addi
tive to other foods — baked goods, ground meats, soft drinks
and the like. But in the not too distant future it is expected
to appear in the supermarkets, packaged for home use.
An especially advantageous characteristic is that cotton is
a crop common to much of the world, so that cottonseed is
readily available in those parts — Southern Asia. Africa and
parts of Latin American — that are most immediately con
fronted with mass hunger.
It may well be. then, that cottonseed biscuits will soon be
a popular addition to American menus and a new staff of life
for much of the rest of the world.
But somehow we wish science wouldn't rush these things
too much. We were just getting used to soybeans and algae
