Phils’ Robinson robs
Braves’ Dusty Baker
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI)- Out
fielders Bill Robinson of
Philadelphia and Dusty Baker
of Atlanta are good friends of
long standing, but Baker feels
he’s got a little “getting even”
coming at the moment.
Robinson robbed Baker of a
game-tying two- run homer in
the last of the ninth Friday
night to save the Phillies 6-4
win over the Braves.
Robinson hurled his body
partially over the fence in the
right field corner to spear
Baker’s drive in what Braves
coach Connie Ryan, who has
been in professional baseball
since 1940, called “the greatest

“I don’t feel it now, I’m still
too excited about the catch,”
said Robinson. “But, boy, I bet
I’ll be sore tomorrow. It’s a
good thing that fence has as
much give in it as it did. If it
had been solid, I’d have pro
bably knocked myself out.”
Robinson, who is 6-foot-3, can
dunk a basketball with two
hands and “that’s how high it
felt I went after that ball.”
Baker said “so can I” when
told about Robinson’s dunking
ability, and added, “I’m going
to get him one day too.
“Bill’s my good friend,” said
Baker. “But he really hurt me
tonight.”
The Robinson catch was the
Griffin Continentals used
three pitchers. Jimmy Harris,
the starter, was charged with
the loss. David Hayes followed
Harris to the mound and Ricky
Tucker relieved Hayes.
They allowed nine hits, struck
out 11 and walked eight.
Jeff Treadway sparked the
Griffin Americans at the plate
second disappointment in a mat
ter of moments for Atlanta fans.
Hank Aaron, who hit his 699th
career homer in the seventh,
was up ahead of Baker and the
prospect of home run No. 700
had the stadium in an uproar.
Aaron walked on a 3-and-2
pitch.
Aaron’s homer, a three - run
drive into the left field seats,
was the 26th of the season for
the 39-year-old outfielder and
left him only 15 behind Babe
Ruth’s career record of 714.
The Braves have offered S7OO

grand-slammer plus a double.
David English and Craig
Deason hit two singles and Jeff
Grant and Mark Gilreath
singled.
Fred Nix, Tommy Hammond,
Steve Ward and Christopher
Cliett singled for Griffin Con
tinentals.
There also are an ever
growing number of photo
graphers on hand as Aaron’s
home run total grows but he
insists that they aren’t
bothering him. “I don’t pay
them any attention,” said
Aaron. “I think they bother the
fans more than they do me.”
Philly Pitcher Wayne Twitch
ell (8-3) faced the minimum 19
Braves in the first 6 1-3 innings,
the lone hit he allowed (in the
fourth) offset by a double play,
but left the game an out later
after Aaron’s homer was fol
lowed by Dave Johnson’s 22nd
homer of the year.
“I was tired before I
started,” said the 6 - foot - 6
Twitchell who was on a week
end pass from Army Reserve
camp. “I was up at 6 a.m.
Thursday, left camp at 7 p.m.
and didn’t get into Philadelphia
until 2 a.m. this morning. Then
I flew on to Atlanta today.”
Loser Phil Niekro (9-5) was
working with three days rest
instead of his usual two was
tagged for eight hits and four
runs in six innings.
Robinson,a Braveuntil traded

the Phillies Friday night, in

Aaron undaunted
by chase pressure
BY NEIL HERSHBERG
UPI Sports Writer
Hank Aaron claims he’s
undaunted by all the pressure
surrounding his chase of Babe
Ruth’s career home run record
but the Atlanta slugger appears
successful in unnerving a few
opposing managers.
Aaron slammed his 699th
career home run Friday night
to move within 15 homers of
Ruth’s career mark as the
Braves dropped a 64 decision
to the Philadelphia Phillies. Bill
Robinson leaped above the
right field fence with two out in
the ninth inning to rob Dusty
Baker of a game-tying two-run
homer with Aaron on first base
after the Phillies had pitched
carefully around Aaron.
Aaron hit a three-run homer
in the seventh inning to
highlight a four-run rally. It
was the 26th homer of the
season for Aaron, who bounced
out and walked in his two
previous at-bats. The 39-year
old Aaron needs only one more
homer to become the second
player ever to reach the 700
figure.
Phillies’ manager Danny
Ozark ordered reliever Mac
Scarce to take no chances with
Aaron at the plate in the final
frame. After Aaron walked on a
3-2 pitch, Dick Ruthven was
brought on to face Baker, the
hottest hitter in the Atlanta
lineup. Baker lined a deep fly
that Robinson speared high
above the fence with a
perfectly timed leap.
“It was the greatest game-
