Griffin Ruthers
win state title
The Griffin Babe Ruth
League All-Stars (14 and 15-
years-old) won the state
championship Saturday by
coming from behind to defeat
East Columbus, 3-2.
Griffin now will represent
Georgia in the Southeastern
Babe Ruth Tournament at
Clearwater, Fla. Aug. 3-6.
Griffin will play Tennessee’s
state champions at 6 p.m. on
Aug. 3.
East Columbus scored a run
in the third and another in the
top of the fourth to take a 2-0
lead.
Griffin’s big inning was the
bottom of the fourth.
After two outs, Eddie Hen
dricks singled. Billy Moore
doubled, scoring Hendricks.
Larry Martin then hit a home
run over the left field fence and
Griffin had its 3-2 victory.
Billy Moore was Griffin’s
winning pitcher. He had relief
help from Randy Foster.
Scott Geiger was Columbus’
loser.
Eastern BR All-Stars
win state championship
The Eastern Division All-
Stars of the Towaliga League
defeated the Western All-Stars
twice here Sunday to win the
state Senior Babe Ruth
championship.
The Eastern Division is made
up of players from Griffin
American Legion Post 15,
Griffin Federal and Jackson.
The Western Division is made
up of players from the Newnan
Americans and Nationals.
The state tournament was a
best two-of-three series.
Johnson says Braves
exhausted mentally
ATLANTA (UPI) - The All-
Star break couldn’t have come
at a better time for the Atlanta
Braves.
“We’re exhausted, physically
and mentally,” said second
baseman Dave Johnson after
the Braves lost a Sunday
doubleheader to Philadelphia 6-
5, 5-1.
“There isn’t another team
that has had as many
doubleheaders as we’ve had, or
as much traveling to do,” added
Johnson. “And to make matters

Columbus had two runs on
seven hits and made four
errors.
Griffin won four games in the
state tournament.
The local all-stars opened
with a 8-1 win over LaGrange.
Griffin came from behind in
its next three games.
They bounced back to defeat
Newnan 7-6, downed North
Columbus 5-4 and came-from

the title game.
Members of the Griffin

Barry Boggs, Wayne Dunn,
Randy Foster, Mark Gatlin,
Mitch Hammond, Kurt Hartle,
Eddie Hendricks, Jeff Hunt,

Billy Moore, Lyn Shockley, Mel
Stewart, Phil Treadway and

worse, there are few stadiums
where it’s hotter than here in
Atlanta. The sad part is that we
have a bunch of open dates (7)
in September, when it’s cooler.”
The Braves looked exhausted
Sunday. They left 11 runners
stranded in the first game, then
committed a record seven
errors in the second while
extending their latest losing
streak to six games and falling
19 games behind Los Angeles in
the National League West.
Hank Aaron added a bright
note to a dismal weekend when
hit homer No. 700 Saturday
night and is now only 14 off
Ruth’s record.
The Braves lead the majors in
home runs with 117 and have
three men Aaron and Darrell
Evans (27) and Johnson (23)
among the leaders.
“We’ve been getting the
hitting, that hasn’t been our
problem of late,” said Manager
Eddie Mathews. “Where we are
hurting most is in the bullpen.
We haven’t been able to find
anyone who can come out and
give us the solid one and two
inning job we need.”
It was Griffin’s second state
Babe Ruth championship.
Several years ago a team
managed by Raymond Mc-
Dermid and coached by
Douglas Collier won the state
title and played in the
Southeastern Tournament at
Charlotte, N.C.
Griffin was runner-up in the
southeastern, losing in the
finals.
Houle signs
contract
QUEBEC CITY (UPI) -
Rejean Houle of the National
Hockey League Montreal
Canadiens Friday signed a
three year contract with the
Quebec Nordiques of the World
Hockey Association.
No details of the contract
were released but Houle
reportedly will be paid more
than $250,000 a season.
The East won the state title by
defeating the West 6-4 and 9-4.
Chuck Dunn was the winning
pitcher in the first game. He
struck out 10 and walked four.
Donald Haynes was the losing
pitcher.
Andy Crumbley had three hits

Three Braves, Aaron, Evans
and Johnson, don’t get to share
in the three-day All-Star rest
since they have all been picked
for Tuesday’s game in Kansas
City.
Aaron goes into that game
with the distinction of being the
only All-Star ever to hit 700
home runs. Babe Ruth had 699
when he played in his last All-
Star Game in 1934.
Those seven errors the
Braves committed in Sunday’s
second game were one more
than the previous record for the
Braves in the eight years they
have been in Atlanta. They had
six against Pittsburgh May 8,
1968.

Berning
wins
tourney
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (UPI) —
There’s no telling what Susie
Maxwell Berning might do on
the women’s golf tour if she
ever went at it seriously and
full-time, but she isn’t even the
least bit curious.
Mrs. Berning won the U.S.
Women’s Open for die second
year in a row and third time in
six years by a whopping five
strokes Sunday, then said she
would celebrate with a month
off the tour that will include a
five-day camping trip by
horseback in the Nevada
Sierras.
“My husband asked me what
I wanted if I won the Open,”
Mrs. Berning said. “I told him
a five-day pack trip.”
Susie will get her trip—if not
for winning the Open, then for
her 32nd birthday, which just
happened to fall Sunday when
she shot an even-par 72 for her
winning total of 290.
It earned her $6,000, little
compared to some of the big
purses that have sprung up on
the LPGA tour the last couple
of years, but Mrs. Berning says
the big-money tournaments
don’t really interest her.
Pearson wants
more victories
HAMPTON, Ga. (UPI) —
David Pearson made his future
plans no secret Sunday after
capturing the Dixie 500 stock
car race and a record eighth
win for the year on a NASCAR
superspeedway.
He wants to win some more.
“I hope we just keep on going
this year,” said the 38-year-old
Pearson after his two-lap
victory over Cale Yarborough.
“I’d like to win a couple more.”
The phenomenal Pearson
breezed past Yarborough’s
pacesetting Chevrolet at the
halfway point of the $102,800
Atlanta International Raceway
event and coasted in for his
fourth straight NASCAR win
and his ninth victory in his last
ten tries.
“I really can’t explain why
we’ve done so well this year,”
said Pearson, who likes to give
the praise to his Wood Brothers
racing team for his Mercury’s
performance. “We’ve been real
lucky and that pit crew is just
unbelievable. They really give
you a boost when you get in and
out so quickly.”
The graying, three-time
Grand National champ took
home $16,150 for his win over
the 1 %-mile high-banked
speedway and boosted his
career earnings to $986,450.
Another win would put him past
the coveted million dollar
plateau that only Richard Petty
has surpassed.
Petty, who set a track record
in qualifying with restrictor
plates to earn the pole position,
ran strong in the early going but
suffered an engine failure in his
Dodge and went out after 72
laps.

Early leader Bobby Isaacs of
Catawba, N.C., in a Ford and
hard running Buddy Baker of
Charlotte, N.C., in a Dodge spun
out in separate accidents and
neither completed 100 miles.
Defending champion Bobby
Allison of Hueytown, Ala., left
after 308 miles with a blown
engine in his Chevrolet.
Donnie Allison of Hueytown,
Ala., slipped past the bigger
names for a third place finish in
his Chevrolet while Joe Frasson
of Golden Valley, Minn., was
fourth in a Dodge and Lennie
Pond of Petersburg, Va., fifth in
a Chevrolet.
But it was obvious at the
halfway point that no one could
keep up with Pearson or
Yarborough. And after watch
ing the amazing Wood Brothers
car in action, there was little
doubt Pearson would duplicate
his earlier win in this year’s
Atlanta 500.
The Spartanburg, S.C., native
used all six caution flags to his
advantage by taking on four
new tires during each slowdown
and blazing off when the green
flag went out to a final 130.211
mile per hour average.
Yarborough, of
Timmonsville, S.C., might have
had the victory had he not
bumped the wall and brushed a
guardrail on the 162nd lap. The
costly accident cost him a half
lap advantage over Pearson,
and by the time he had his car
corrected, he found himself a
lap down. Pearson led the final
166 laps.
“Winning a race takes a lot of
breaks,” said Pearson. “And
goodness knows, we’ve been
getting the breaks this year.”

Wise, Hunter
opening pitchers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (UPI) )
—Rick Wise of the St. Louis
Cardinals and Jim Hunter of
the world champion Oakland
A’s are expected to be named
the starting pitchers today for
Tuesday night’s 44th All-Star
game between the National and
American Leagues.
The selection of Wise and
Hunter will bring to center
stage in baseball’s annual
showcase event two of the most
under-publicized pitchers in the
game.
Only a year ago, owner
Gussie Busch of the Cardinals
was under intense criticism for
having traded Steve Carlton to
the Phillies for Wise. Carlton
had a 27-10 record for the
Phillies while Wise had a 16-16
mark for the Cardinals. Carlton
was not even chosen for the
1973 NL All-Star squad by
Manager Sparky Anderson of
the Cincinnati Reds.
Hunter, who has pitched a
perfect game and been a two
time 20-game winner during his
career, has consistently been
under-publicized in comparison
to such AL pitchers as
teammate Vida Blue, Mickey
Lolich of Detroit, Gaylord
Perry of Cleveland and, for
that matter, Nolan “Double No
Hit” Ryan of California.
As the advance guard of the
stars of both leagues and
baseball notables gathered for
the game in Kansas City’s
spanking new Harry S. Truman
playground, NL Manager And
erson was also forced to make
another move. Cincinnati short
stop Dave Concepcion suffered,
a broken left ankle Sunday and
was replaced as backup short
stop by Bill Russell of the Los
Angeles Dodgers. Chris Speier
of the San Francisco Giants,
the fans’ choice as the
shortstop, will start the game
for the Nationals.
