Car thefts
surge here
Griffin Police investigated a
number of weekend burglaries
and thefts, including reports of
two stolen cars.
A. B. McFarland, 504 South
Sixth street, parked his car in
Kroger’s lot while he went into
shop and when he returned
some 30 minutes later, someone
had stolen his car. He told police
he had left his keys in the
vehicle.
The auto was a 1968 Chevrolet
Malibu with tag number ETC
-532.

Mrs. Hazel Kimbell, 737
Maple drive, told officers that
someone came into her house,
stole her car keys and drove
away in her 1972 Lincoln Con
tinental which was parked in
the yard.
The theft occurred between 1
p.m. Saturday and 6 p.m.
yesterday.
The car tag number was RIG-
Police officers scared away a
burglar who had broken into the
Coca Cola Bottling Co. on East
Taylor street around 4:50 a.m.
Sunday. They were looking for
the suspect and he jumped over
the fence and escaped.
Vandals shot out 12 window
panes and the glass door of the
Oakhill cemetery office
sometime between Saturday
afternoon and early Sunday
night. Police said the damage
would amount to around $270.
Police also are investigating a
burglary at the Spalding County
Community Center, 430 South
Eighth street, in which four
dollars was stolen from a desk
drawer.
The thief entered the building
through a window sometime
between 4 p.m. Friday and 11
a.m. Saturday.

There are some 35,000 mar

Almanac for 1838 said flatly
that January 20 would be the
coldest day of the winter. It
turned out to be the coldest
day England had suffered in
generations, and the 1837-38
season was long known as
Murphy’s Winter.

Funeral services for Mrs.
Rosa Crumbley Williams, 73,
widow of Earnest A. Williams of
Jackson, will be held Wed
nesday at 2 p.m. from the
chapel of Haisten Brothers
Funeral Home in Jackson with
the Rev. Rodger Dowdell of
ficiating.
Burial will be in the Cedar
Rock cemetery, Butts County.
Mrs. Williams died early
Sunday morning at the St.
Claire Manor Nursing Home,
where she was a patient, in
Lincoln, 111.
The body will arrive in Griffin
Tuesday. Friends may visit the
family at the funeral home
Tuesday from 7-9 p.m.
Her survivors include one
daughter, Mrs. James Hut
chinson of Broadwell, Ill.; two
sisters, Mrs. Emma Tingle of
Locust Grove, and Mrs. Onie
Crumbley of Forest Park; two
grandchildren and one great
grandchild.

Funeral services for Mr.
Harrison Harley Smith of the
Macon road, Griffin, were held
today at 4 p.m. from the chapel
of Pittman-Rawls Funeral
Home with the Rev. Randy
Healan officiating.
Burial was in the Oak Hill
cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Saturday
morning at his home after an
extended illness.
He was a graduate of Milner
High School and an employe of
21 years with the Roadway
Express Company of Atlanta.
Mr. Smith was a member of
the Midway United Methodist
Church and a veteran of World
War Two.
He is survived by his widow,
Mrs. Louise McCook Smith; his
mother, Mrs. Lindsey Smith;
two daughters, Mrs. Larry
Mangham and Miss Carol
Smith; a son, Richard Smith of
Atlanta; a sister, Mrs. James
Scott of Griffin; and two
grandchildren.

Mr. Huckaby
Mr. Fred M. Huckaby, 67, of
Hapeville, formerly of Griffin,
died unexpectedly at his home
late Saturday afternoon ap
parently of a heart attack.
He was the son of Mrs. Nona
Huckaby of Griffin and the late
Mr. Henry C. Huckaby.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Lena Arnold Huckaby of
Hapeville; two sons, Henry M.
Huckaby of Barnesville and
Richard D. Huckaby of Atlanta;
three daughters, Mrs. Claude
Donehoo, Jr., of Griffin, Mrs.
Dorothy Kersey of Atlanta and
Mrs. Fred T. Florence of
Riverdale, Ga.; four sisters,
Mrs. Newell Pritchett of
Southern Pines, N.C., Mrs. Bill
Wilkerson of Detroit, Mich.,
Mrs. A. W. Segars of Marietta
and Mrs. J. E. Parham of
Marietta; six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
this afternoon at 2 o’clock in Mt.
Zion Methodist Church at
Hapeville and burial was in the
church cemetery.

Funeral services for Mr.
William Edwin “Bill” Campbell
of Route Two, Hampton, were
held this morning at 11 o’clock
from the chapel of Pittman-
Rawls Funeral Home with the
Rev. James Warbingtonand the
Rev. Carlton Knight officiating.
Burial was in the Haynes
Creek Primative Baptist
Church cemetery in Loganville.
Mr. Campbell died Saturday
after an extended illness.
A Lawrenceville native, he
had lived in Hampton for the
past nine years.
He was a member of the First
Christian Church, Atlanta, and
an employe of the Suburban L.
P. Gas Company of Griffin.
His survivors include his
widow, Mrs. Betty Brown
Campbell; two daughters, Mrs.
James A. Conkle, of Hampton;
and Miss Arlene Meadows of
Luthersville, Ga.; three sons,
David Meadows of Warm
Springs, Kenneth Meadows of
Luthersville, and Craig
Meadows of Hampton; his
mother, Mrs Pearl Campbell of
Conyers; and a sister, Mrs. Nell
Rutledge of Snellville.

Mrs. Vara Jordan will be an

Mrs. Jordan died Sunday
morning at the Spalding County
Convalescent Center, where she
was a patient.
She was a lifelong resident of
Griffin.
Her survivors include one
daughter, Mrs. Rosa Kate
Mangham.

The largest prehistoric in

Seven arrested
in Pike drug raid
A Griffin man was arrested
here on drug charges Saturday
night. Seven persons were
charged with drug violations in
a raid near Concord by Pike
Sheriff’s officers.
The Griffinite was identified
as Norris Stinson, 23, of 608
Central avenue. He was
arrested late Saturday night at
a Pool road apartment and
charged with violation of
Georgia’s Drug Abuse and
Control Act.
The arrest was made by
Officers Roy Williams, Earl
Ethridge, and Jesse Hamm who
found a small quantity of
marijuana in his possession.
Sheriff J. Astor Riggins of
Pike County said his depart
ment raided a house about a
mile west of Concord off Ga. 18
and arrested seven persons,
including four teenagers,
Saturday night.
He identified them as Billy
Eugene Biles, 26, of 636 Johnson
street, Griffin; his brother,
Douglas Biles, Route One,
Concord; Wayne Cato, 25, Route

Funeral services for Mr. Alvin
Harris Foster, 70, of Route
Three, North Ridge road,
Barnesville, will be held
Tuesday at 3 p.m. from the
First Baptist Church with the
Rev. Brantley Harwell of
ficiating.
Burial will be in the Green
wood cemetery.
The body will be brought to
the church from the funeral
home to lie in state 30 minutes
before the service hour.
Mr. Foster, a retired employe
of William Carter Company,
died early this morning at his
home.
He was a member of the First
Baptist Church, where he
served as a deacon and taught
Sunday School for 27 years.
His survivors include his
widow, Mrs. Mattie Frances
Stallings Foster; three sons,
James N. Foster of Barnesville,
Edward C. Foster of Austin,
Tex., and Alvin H. Foster, Jr.,
of Athens; and three grand
children.
Haisten Brothers Funeral
Home of Barnesville is in
charge of all arrangements.
Mr. Glass
Funeral arrangements for
Mr. Storman Glass Jr., of
Atlanta, will be announced by
Pittman-Rawls Funeral Home
of Griffin.
Mr. Glass died early this
morning in Atlanta.
71 arrested
in Griffin
Griffin Police arrested 71
persons during the weekend,
which they said is about three
times the usual number.
Most of those arrested were
charged with routine offenses
such as drunkenness or traffic
violations.
The weekend period covered
Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
One, Concord; William David
Whitfield, 17, Williamson;
Sandra Zeiger, 17, Johnson
street, Barnesville; Gary
Hatchett, 17, Williamson; and a
16-year-old Williamson youth
who cannot be identified under
Georgia law.
Sheriff Riggins said the raid
took place at a house rented by
Douglas Biles and Cato. In
addition to violating drug laws,
these two also were charged
with operating a disorderly
house.
Marijuana, pills, suspected
cocaine, and three marijuana
smoking pipes were confiscated
in the raid, the sheriff said.
He said the raid came after
his department received a
report that a drug party was in
progress at the residence. He
said that 12 to 15 other persons
had left the scene before the
raid.

Six injured
in traffic
At least six persons were
injured in weekend traffic
accidents.
Two Griffin men complained
of neck injuries following a
rearend collision on the Griffin
By-Pass near Ga. 16 Saturday
morning.
Police identified them as
William H. Barnes, 618 Hale
avenue, and his passenger, Dick
Slade, 912 Mockingbird land.
Both were checked at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital
emergency room.
The driver of the other car
was identified as Ulysses
Williams of Albany. He was not
injured, police said.
Larry Donell Jones, 25, of 605
Melrose avenue, suffered head
and leg abrasions when the
gravel truck he was driving
overturned some 6.4 miles east
of Griffin on Ga. 155 Saturday
morning.
Troopers at the Griffin State
Patrol Post said Jones told
them he leaned over to pick up a
weight ticket which had blown
off the dash and his dump truck,
loaded with gravel, ran off the
road, hit a deep hole on the
shoulder and overturned
slidding some 24 feet before
Claims record
ANAHEIM, Calif. (UPI) -
Hotel manager Terry Geer, 32,
claimed a ping pong endurance
record Sunday after a game
that lasted 49 hours, 12 minutes
and 40 seconds. The old record
was 48 hours.
The current edition of the
Guiness Book of World Records
fails to list any category for
marathon table tennis for less
than four persons, but Geer
said he had been in contact
with the editors of the record
book and he said he was
confident his record would be
sanctioned.

coming to rest
Troopers blamed faulty
steering as the cause of an
accident Saturday afternoon in
which a Barnesville woman was
injured.
Mrs. Linda Miley, Route One,
Box 377, Barnesville, suffered
back and head injuries and was
treated at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital. The accident occurred
about five miles east of Griffin
on the Old McDonough road.
Troopers said the steering
linkage on Mrs. Miley’s car
came loose and caused her to
lose control of the vehicle on a
curve. The auto ran off the road
down a steep bank and over
turned.
A two-car collision some 5.8
miles east of Griffin on Ga. 16
Friday night sent two Grif
finites to the local hospital with
injuries.
They were identified as
Jackie May, 17, of High Falls
road, who was a passenger in a
car driven by Arthur Lee
O’Neal, 21, of Route Four, and
Bennie Ogletree, 20, Route
Four, who was a passenger in a
vehicle driven by Johnny C.
Shannon, 16. May was treated
for possible back and internal
injuries. Ogletree suffered leg
and neck injuries.
