LONDON (UPI) - Doctors
were astounded.
There, among patients suffer
ing blistered skin and sunburn
in a Tuesday heat wave in
Britain, was a frostbitten toe.
“The doctor I saw could
hardly believe it,” said Alan
Hirst, owner of the toe.
He said he was marooned for
14 hours while climbing Mont
Blanc in France but didn’t seek
medical attention until he
returned to London.
A hospital spokesman said,
“It’s the last thing you’d
expect. But I’m sure Alan
doesn’t think it’s funny. Frost
bite can be painful.”

months of the year. Officials,
however, cautioned against
assigning great significance to
the relatively small, seasonally
adjusted, surplus. The trade
deficit narrowed from $1 billion
during the first quarter to S3OO
million during the second.
The change early this year
from fixed to floating exchange
rates in Europe, along with
large Japanese sales of dollars
to maintain the value of the
yen, accounted for the pay

ment’s Bureau of Economic
Analysis reported.
In addition, American inves
tors were discouraged from
investing abroad because of
high domestic interest rates.
The dollar has been gaining
strength steadily on internation
al markets in recent weeks,
reflecting new confidence in the
health of the U.S. economy in
relationship to other nations,
and a declining price of gold.
The low point in the balance
if payments occurred at the end
of 1971 with $29.7 billion deficit.
