win women’s doubles
Jan Sharp and Sandy Schenk
won the women’s doubles here
yesterday in the Middle Georgia
Tennis Tournament.
They defeated Susan Ahl and
Shelly Vaughn 6-2 and 6-2.
Scott Thompson of Forest
Park defeated Jimmy Jordan of
Griffin 7-5 and 7-6 in the finals of
the boys 18 and under division.

Weldon defeated Jeff Watkins
and Dean Roberts 6-1,3-6 and 6-
Bears leave
for camp
The Griffin Bears will leave
Sunday at 4 p.m. for their foot
ball training camp at Indian
Springs, Ga.
The Bears will remain at
camp until Saturday, Aug. 25.
Forty-seven players plus the
coaching staff will make the
trip.
The Bears have been prac
ticing in shorts this week.
They will dress out in full
uniforms for the first time

The camp will include two-a
day practice sessions with films
at night.
Most players are in good
physical condition. A few have
pulled muscles suffered in the
conditioning drills. Other than
that there haven’t been any
major injuries.

Cowens signs
BOSTON (UPI)- Dave
Cowens, the most valuable
player in the National
Basketball Association last
season, has signed a three-year,
no-cut contract with the Celtics.

Auerbach, who said Cowens
received a salary increase,
said, “We are both happy with
the contract.”

Association hosted the Middle
Georgia Golf Tournament
Thursday with 33 members
participating. Seven clubs were
represented.
Susan Huguley, local club
champion, shot a 79 to win low
Golf tourney
planned Sept. 2
The Griffin Municipal Golf
Course will sponsor a four-ball,
36-hole medal play tournament
beginning on Sunday, Sept. 2.
Eighteen holes will be played
on Sunday and 18 more on
Monday, Labor Day.
Entry fee is S2O per team.
