The lake was immediately
closed to swimming. The lake
had been marked for swimming
only at the bather’s risk due to
the lack of lifeguards.
Park officials said despite
rangers’ warnings, campers
often fed the alligator and it
had evidently lost its fear of
humans. They also speculated
that it was attracted blindly to
the girl’s thrashing in the water
at night without actually seeing
her.
Efforts had been made
recently to trap the animal and
remove it to a remote area of
the Everglades but the efforts
had failed.
superiority in launch tubes.
U.S. officials justified this on
grounds that the United States
was far ahead in MIRV and
other qualitative factors which
they regarded as more impor
tant than numbers.
But Schlesinger indicated
Friday that the Pentagon feels
U.S. policy now should be to
insist on reduction in Soviet
numbers in arms talks.
“As the Soviets close the
technical gap and acquire
MIRV capabilities, improved
warhead and guidance,” he
said, “the United States is not
in a position to tolerate the
numerical or quantitative
disadvantages presently pos
sessed by the Soviet Union.
“We do not want to allow
such an imbalance ... and
therefore the purpose of SALT
II negotiations (a resumption of
the 1972 talks) will be to
maintain a balance and pre
clude the marrying of these
newly acquired technologies to
the existing Soviet numerical
advantage.”
Schlesinger said that as a
result of the Soviet tests, the
chances of negotiating controls
on multi-warheads “have
deteriorated sadly.” State De
partment officials, however,
said they do not regard it as
being too late to negotiate
limits on MIRV.
worst blazes were in north
central Idaho. One roared
through 5,000 acres of Nez
Perce Indian land. The other
covered 4,000 acres near Bull
Creek.
The fiercest blaze in Montana
was between Great Falls and
Helena. It blackened 5,000
acres.
The Forest Service said the
price tag for fire-fighting
efforts was now $500,000 a day.
Idaho Gov. Cecil Andrus
Friday night authorized use of
the National Guard to aid
firemen.
Elsewhere, officials reported
a 2,600-acre fire in the Kootenai
National Forest, on the U.S.-
Canadian border, and a 1,100-
acre grass and timber fire near
Spirit Lake in Northern Idaho.
Two fires totaling nearly 1,500
acres were burning unchecked
along the Idaho-Montana border
in the Bitterroot National
Forest.
Extreme drought conditions,
along with high winds the last
three days prompted the Forest
Service to close all national
forest lands north of the
Salmon River in Northern
Idaho.
The closure prohibits persons
from being in or going into the
forest lands without a permit.
