Jackson man
A Jackson man was admitted
to the Griffin-Spalding Hospital
last night after being shot in the
leg. A warrant has been taken
charging another Jackson
resident with aggravated
assault in connection with the
incident.
The wounded man was
identifiedas James Akins, 31, of
149 Ash street, Jackson.
Charged with the shooting was
Willie Howard Miller of
Jackson.

Mr. Polk
Mr. Edgar Hunter Polk, 69, of
Milner, died yesterday af
ternoon at his residence.
Mr. Polk was born in Jasper
County and had made his home
in Barnesville and Lamar
County for 15 years. He was a
former policeman in Bar
nesville and served on the
Lamar County Sheriff’s
Department for several years.
Mr. Polk was a constable of
Milner and a member of the
First Baptist Church in Bar
nesville.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Addie Lou Whiddon Polk of
Milner; grandson, Ricky Polk
of Doraville; step-son, Tony
Byars of Barnesville; step
daughter, Mrs. Anne Harting of
Willow Street, Pa.; five sisters,
Mrs. Mattie Weaver of Jackson,
Mrs. Lizzie Thaxton, Mrs.
Louise Ward, both of Griffin,
Mrs. Maggie Faukner of For
syth and Mrs. Inez Gowan of
Immeklee, Fla.; a brother,
Frank Polk of Jackson.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
3 o’clock in the chapel of
Haisten Funeral Home in
Barnesville. The Rev. Brantley
Harwell and the Rev. Sam
will officiate and burial
will be in Greenwood cemetery
in Barnesville.
Mr. Eppinger
Mr. Jody Eppinger, Jr., of
Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of
Pike County, died Sunday
morning in Cleveland.
He was bom in Pike County,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Jody Ep
pinger, Sr., and was a member
of the Mt. Hope Baptist Church
in Zebulon.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Pauline Eppinger; two
daughters, Miss Rosazine
Eppinger and Miss Jonatte
Eppinger, both of Cleveland; a
sister, Mrs. Betty J. Jackson of
St. Louis, Mo.; three brothers,
Johnny Eppinger, Edward
Eppinger of Cleveland and
Benny Eppinger of Zebulon.
Funeral services will be held
Wednesday in Cleveland.
Mr. Flemister
Mr. Homer Flemister, 61, of
Atlanta, died Saturday evening
at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta
where he had been a patient for
three weeks.
He was a native of Concord.
Survivors include three
sisters, Mrs. Roberta B.
Daniels, of Griffin, Mrs. Daisy
Hill of Winter Haven, Fla., and
Mrs. Emma Henley of Pom
pano Beach, Fla.
Funo-al plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Mr. Carmichael
Mr. Howard Carmichael of
Atlanta, formerly of Hampton,
died Sunday morning at Grady
Memorial Hospital in Atlanta
after several weeks of illness.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Mattie Carmichael.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Mrs. Tyler
Mrs. Pearlie Mae Tyler, 72, of
Route one, Concord, died
Sunday evening at her
residence. She had been in
declining health for three years.
Mrs. Tyler was a lifelong
resident of Pike County and a
member of the Pleasant Hill
CME Church in Concord.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Annie M. Williams and a
sister, Miss Annie Mae Stanley,
both of Concord.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.

Mr. Abbott
Mr. Andrew “Jack” Jackson
Abbott, 79, of Route two, Bar
nesville, died Saturday af
ternoon in Upson County
Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Abbott had made his
home in the Antioch community
of Lamar County for the past 50
years. He was a member and
deacon of Antioch Baptist
Church.
He was a retired farmer and
member of the Farm Bureau.
Mr. Abbott served on the
Agricultural Commission in
Lamar County for 15 years. He
was a veteran of World War One
and a member of the Martin and
Moore Post 25, American
Legion.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Mittie Barksdale Abbott;
two daughters Mrs. Lillian
Hurt of Hampton and Mrs. Lena
Mae Mitchell of Warner
Robins; four sons, Ben T. Ab
bott, Clerk of Superior Court,
Lamar County, Corry Abbott of
Barnesville, Lamar L. Abbott of
McDonough and M-Sgt. Mit
chell Abbott of Moody Field,
Valdosta; 12 grandchildren,
five great-grandchildren; two
sisters, Miss Annie Abbott and
Mrs. Luther Brooks, both of
Griffin; two brothers, Sandy
Abbott, Sr., of Barnesville and
Julius Abbott of Griffin.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 3
o’clock in the Antioch Baptist
Church. The Rev. Edward
Mimbs officiated and burial
was in Lamar Memory Gar
dens.
Three arrested
on drug counts
Local lawmen made three
drug arrests during the week
end and are questioning four
other young men about some
marijuana found in their
automobile.

Three hurt
in accidents
Ronald Thomas Peters, 36, of
Route Four, Box 78-A, was
admitted to the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital with a broken neck and
other injuries he suffered in a
traffic accident early Saturday
morning.
Troopers at the Griffin State
Patrol Post said that Peters was
traveling on Ga. 16 near the
Bailey Jester road when he lost
control of his pickup truck. The
vehicle ran into the ditch and
bank and turned over on its
side, troopers said.
Two young women, identified
as Brenda Priest, 22, 526 North
17th street, and Kathlene
Duncan, 22, Turner street, were
injured last night in a two-car
collision on the North Express
way at Ellis road. Griffin police
said they were passengers in a
car driven by Lawrence Priest,
20, of 526 North 17th street. The
other car, driven by Douglas E.
Goins, Jr., 26, of 307 Brooks
avenue, pulled onto the Ex
pressway from Ellis road into
the path of the Priest auto,
police said.

Burglar
left loot
A burglar who had stacked a
television and other loot by a
mobile home door, left without
taking anything when he ap
parently was frightened away
by a neighbor who saw him and
called the Sheriff’s office
yesterday.
Sheriff Dwayne Gilbert said
that someone reported a
burglary was in progress on
Steel road at a trailer owned by
J. T. Bowen of Atlanta.
When the deputies arrived,
they found the trailer door open
and the television and other
items by the door, where ap
parently the burglar had placed
them before he became
frightened and fled.
Man hits woman
Mrs. Hattie C. Davis of RFD,
Murphy, N.C., told Griffin
police that she was standing in
front of IGA in Experiment last
night when a man walked up, hit
her in the head and took off with
two pieces of her luggage.
The incident happened
around 8 p.m.

meeting. It will begin at 12:15

Marshall and Johnson were
arrested when found with
marijuana in their possession
by Sheriff’s Deputies Larry
Campbell and David Head.
They were arrested in a car off
Pine Tree circle Friday.
Griffin Police officers, Sgt.
Herman Parker and Officer
Johnny Jett, took Wiggs into
custody around 12:55 a.m.
yesterday when they found two
marijuana cigarets in his
possession. He was arrested in
the 200 block of Wall street.
The suspects were taken to
the Spalding County jail where
bonds of SI,OOO each were set.
In a separate incident,
troopers at the Griffin Patrol
Post and Spalding Sheriff’s
deputies picked up four young
men and were questioning them
about marijuana found in their
auto. Charges were expected to
be placed against one or more of
them, officials said.

More and more it’s becoming business as usual on

Each Sunday in McDonough retailers ring up brisk
retail sales.
•I; Following the lead of supermarkets. Top Dollars
Stores is one of the first variety stores to open :$
Sundays.
After opening at 1 p.m. last Sunday, customers ft
steadily filtered through the checkout register. $
Loreen Ogletree, on duty at the time, said, “We
always do a steady business on Sunday. Sometimes it
is more than we do Fridays. Os course, Saturdays are
our busiest days."
Up the way a few doors, Sav-Rx was doing a brisk : : :
Sunday afternoon business. The discount drug store,
which also carries a large variety line, has opened
Sundays since the days it was on the McDonough
Public Square as Standard Rexall Drugs.
$ Elaine Moore was busy assisting several customers.
She said, “We are always busy on Sunday, but then we
are busy all the time.”
Big Buy Grocery store at the corner of Keys Ferry
$: and North Cedar Street in McDonough, is open
Sundays from 12 noon to 6 p.m.
Store manager Melvin Carmichael said, “We do a
steady business. About equal to a week day I suppose.
Near the first of the month, 75 percent of our Sunday v
shoppers are doing their grocery buying for the week
on Sunday just as they did before on Friday or
Saturday.”
More and more it’s business as usual on Sundays.
Griffinite
opens revival
Calvin Lane, a native of
Griffin, will open a tent revival
two miles south of Eatonton
tonight. The series of services
will continue through Sept. 1,
beginning each night at 7:45
p.m.
Lane, a graduate of Griffin
High School, entered the teach
ing profession after a hitch in
the U. S. Navy and his college
years.
He now is devoting his time to
evangelistic work,
Transmission
Griffin Police were in
vestigating the theft of an auto
transmission last night.
Raymond White of 1270
Edgewood avenue told officers
that someone stole a tran
smission, valued at $175, he had
put in the trunk of his car.
