ATLANTA (UPI) — Journey

Shiner, a 10-year veteran who
was relegated to the Falcon taxi

England’s Brian Redman
closed to within 30 points of
South African Jody Scheckter
in the IAM Formula 5000
championship series with an
easy victory Sunday at Road
Atlanta.
Redman, who started on the
pole in his Lola, led from start
to finish for a 28-second victory
over Mark Donohue’s Lola, the
largest victory margin in an
IAM series race this year.
“Being out front by a good
margin is not the best mental
situation,” said Redman after
the twisting, 75-mile dash over
the hilly, 2.52-mile road course.
“You don’t want to slow down
because you never know what
will happen and you lose your
concentration. So you push it
and hope everything goes
well.”
England’s Peter Gethin fin
ished third in a Chevron with
Scheckter fourth in a Lola.

Gibron sees
bright spots
By ED SAINSBURY
UPI Sports Writer
RENSSELAER, Ind. (UPI) -
Pessimism never has been a
characteristic of Abe Gibron,
and the burly coach of the
Chicago Bears runs true to
form heading into his second
season in charge.
He can see far more bright
than bleak spots in anticipation
of the National Football League
season.
First, he said, this is his kind
of football team. “They’re
physical,” he said. “They want
second Atlanta touchdown in the
third period. The Falcons wid
ened the margin to 20-3 in the
fourth period when Harmon
Wages scored from the 10 after
taking Shiner passes of 23 and
21 yards to set up the tally.
New England closed the gap
on a six-yard scoring run by
Henry Matthews before Shiner
iced the game with a five-yard
scoring toss to rookie Tom Gere
dine.
For the Patriots, Jim Plun
kett completed six of 17 passes
for 67 yards before giving way
to Brian Dowling who hit three
of five for 16 yards.
It was the second straight
pre-season win for the Falcons
while the Patriots are winless
in four outings.
The race marked the first
time this year that Schneckter
has not finished first or second
in an L&M series event. There
are two more races on the
series schedule.
to hit people. They’re big and
strong and in good physical
condition, and I’m actually
pleased with the way they’ve
reacted to my kind of football.”
Second, he said, “last year
we didn’t have a running back
who could line up. This year
we’ve got 12 of them.”
Third, “I think we can
control the line of scrimmage
on most football teams. Our
offensive line and defensive line
should be way above average
for NFL caliber.”
Trades Produce Help
Trades produced what could
be expert help for the Bears
since running back Carl Garrett
came from New England and
already has earned a starting
berth, bringing a cheerful grin
to Gibron’s face each time he
carries the ball. In addition
tight end Craig Cotton came
from Detroit, and Gibron says,
“we’ve got a true tight end that
loves to hit people and loves to
play football.”
Bobby Douglass remains at
quarterback, probably, and
Gibron said he was better
because he was getting compe
tition from rookie Gary Huff.
Douglass’ propensity to run
last year resulted in 968 yards
and helped the Bears rank as
the league leader in rushing.
But they were last in passing
as Douglass had a 38 per cent
completion average, and both
Douglass and Gibron expect
better balance this year.
The addition of Cotton al
lowed Gibron to switch Earl
Thomas from tight end to wide
receiver and he believes the
Bears will be good but thin at
both positions with George
Farmer and Jim Seymour
spelling Thomas.
