Soap Box Derby
winner disqualified
AKRON, Ohio (UPI) -
Officials of the All-American
Soap Box Derby want to talk to
the winner of Saturday’s 36th
running of the contest. They
want to inform him he isn’t the
champion any more.
James H. Gronen, 14, of
Boulder, Colo., made dubious
Derby history Monday when he
became the first winner ever to
be disqualified.
Derby officials said the boy
was “somewhere in the United
States vacationing with his
parents, celebrating his vic

Officials disqualified James
after an inspection of his green
racer showed he had installed
an electro-magnetic device
which would enable his car “to

Prisoner escapes
in county truck
A nation-wide lookout is in
effect for a prisoner who
escaped from a Spalding County
Stockade work detail yesterday
afternoon around 2:30 near
Orchard Hill.
The prisoner, who is white,
was identified as Marvin
Stanford Smallwood, 24, of
Jones County. Smallwood and
other inmates were doing some
grading on Walker’s Mill road
at the Cook road intersection
near Orchard Hill when
Smallwood got into a county
Public Works Camp pickup
truck and drove away. The keys
had been left in the truck which
was parked by the side of the
road, prison officials said.
Early this morning the truck
was found abandoned near Mez-
Art Studios on Bucksnort road.
Around 7 a.m. Ralph Wilson, a
city jailer who lives on
Bucksnort road near the
studios, reported that his 1964
Chevrolet pickup truck was
stolen during the night from the
yard of his home. Lawmen

where most of his relatives live.
He also has a sister in College
Park, they said.
Smallwood was on the first
year of a 15-year sentence for
burglary and theft by taking. He
had been at the Spalding County
stockade less than a month.
He was wearing white prison
clothing with a blue stripe down
the trousers’ legs. The truck in
which he is believed to be
traveling was dark green with
crome trim along the sides.
Sisterhood
discusses
‘pettiness’
Members of the Sisterhood of
Mt. Zion Baptist Church
discussed pettiness during their
monthly meeting.
Mrs. Josie R. Spikes, pro
gram chairman, asked mem
bers to express their opinions on
the topic.
Some of the conclusions the
group reached were:
—Those who fall into the habit
of being petty become first class
naggers.
—One should not become
upset by petty actions or unkind
words of another.
—One should not brood over
wrongs done to them which they
should forgive nor hold in their
hearts betrayal by people
thought to be friends.
—Forget it when a reward one
thought she deserved was
denied.
—Don’t worry about the fact
that someone can do a job better
than you but rather praise him
or her.
Mrs. Beatrice Atkinson is
president of the Sisterhood and
presided.
The Rev. O. H. Stinson is
pastor.
