Griffin coaches get victory ride
Bears rip Rockdale
Coach Max Dowis was hoping
the Griffin Bears could kick off
the second half of the Region 6-
AAA season with a victory.
His wish came true last night
in Conyers, Ga. when the Bears
roared from behind to upset the
once beaten Rockdale County
Bulldogs, 28-19.
The Griffin coach feared his
young team was becoming

He tried to pep up the team by
giving it last Monday off. He
also curtailed scrimmage
sessions on other days in an
effort to let Griffin’s walking
wounded recover and to let the
team relax a little from the
grind of practice.
The moves paid off.
It was easy to see that Griffin
was mentally ready when it
took the field at Conyers.
Griffin won the toss and
elected to receive.
Johnny Roberts returned the
kick to the Griffin 30.
The Bears promptly drove 70
yards in seven plays for a
touchdown. Not even a 15 yard
pentalty on a crucial third and
three situation could stop the
determined Bears.
Several fans called the
opening touchdown drive the
Bears’ best of the season. It was
a good mixture of sweeps and
passing.
Roberts launched it with a 13
yard burst around right end.
After Gary McDowell was
knocked down for no gain,
Roberts picked up seven, set
ting up the third and three.

Griffin drew a 15 yard penalty
on the next play, making it third
and 18.
The setback was only
momentary.
Wille Jordan found McDowell
with a 27 yard pass and Griffin
had a first down at the Rockdale
37.
It took the Bears just three
plays to cover the remaining
yards.
Roberts struck for 17 and
picked up five more on suc
cessive carries.
Jordan passed 16 yards to
Clemon Ector for the touch
down. The drive lasted four
minutes and two seconds.
Jordan’s kick for the extra
point was wide and Griffin was
left with a 6-0 lead.
Rockdale, on its first of
fensive series, showed why it
entered the game with a 5-1
record.
The Bulldogs drove 74 yards
for a tying touchdown. The
drive took nine plays, the key
one a 32 yard pass from quar
terback Don Bonner to end
Chris Brown.
Bonner scored the TD on a
one yard plunge.
The extra point was missed,
leaving the score locked at 6-6.
Rockdale took a 13-6 lead a
few minutes later.
The go-ahead touchdown was
set up when Bryant Coggins
blocked a Griffin punt at the
Bears’ 41.
Bonner dazzled the Griffin
defense with two quick option
plays. He picked up 23 yards on
the first one and scored the TD
from eight yards out on the
second.
Tami Tarbush kicked the
extra point and the Bulldogs
had a 13-6 lead.
Mike Head set up Griffin’s
second TD when he intercepted
a pass. The return was very
short but a 15 yard penalty
stepped off against Rockdale
gave Griffin possession mid
field.
Jordan passed to Cctor for 33
yards on the first play from
scrimmage.
Mike Head, behind some good
blocking, took care of the next
17 yards. He gained seven and
two on back-to-back rushes. He
scored from the eight on the
next snap.
Griffin decided to go for two
points on the conversion. A five
yard penalty was called against
Griffin, putting the ball back to
the eight.
Jordan passed to Ector for the
two points that put Griffin
ahead to stay, 14-13.

early in the third.
Rockdale took the second half
kickoff and drove to the Griffin
47 where the Bears’ defense
tightened. Rockdale punted into
the end zone.
The ball was brought out to
the 20 where on first down a
Jordan pass fell incomplete.
It didn’t matter, for on the
very next snap, Roberts ripped
around the right side and raced
80 yards for a touchdown.
Jordan kicked the extra point,
making the score Griffin 21 and
Rockdale 13.
Rockdale fumbled on the
kickoff and Griffin recovered at
the Bulldogs’ 23.
Head gained eight yards but
Jordan was dropped for a two
yard loss. A pass fell im
complete, setting up a fourth
and four situation.
Griffin called time and Coach
Dowis mapped strategy.
The plan worked.
Jordan hit Johnny Wilder
with a very short pass and the
little speedster turned it into a
big 20 yard touchdown play by
.weaving his way through the
Rockdale defense.
Jordan kicked the extra point
to end Griffin’s scoring.
Griffin’s defense took charge
and didn’t allow Rockdale
another TD until late in the
fourth period.
It was scored on a 20 yard
pass from Bonner to Chris
Brown.
Rockdale went for two points.
The attempt failed before a
tough Griffin line.
Rockdale tried an on-side
kickoff but Griffin recovered.
The Bears picked up two first
downs to the Rockdale 29 before
time ran out.
The Bears celebrated the big
victory by giving Griffin
coaches a ride on their
shoulders.
Roberts was Griffin’s leading
rusher with 141 yards on 15
snaps. Jordan had 43 on eight
carries and Head gained 34 on
seven.
Griffin had 217 yards rushing
to Rockdale’s 179. The Bears
had 94 yards passing to Rock
dale’s 134.

Three years ago God took
you.
To Heaven up above.
Three years since we've held
you,
And gave you our love.
We miss you, and your smile.
And the way you ran and
played.
But God needed an angel,
So what could we say?
We know you are happy,
God watches over you.
So we'll be good until we can
Be happy with you, too.
We love you, Petey.
