Soft-boiled
egg ended
up in mess
By RIV TOBIN
Copley News Service
Dear Mrs. Tobin: I ordered
a soft-boiled egg and expected
it to come in a sauce dish. The
waitress brought it to me in an
egg cup. How should I have
eaten it? I ended up with an
awful mess. — Vancouver
Reader
Dear Reader: The British
way is to slice off the top of the
egg with a knife, placing the
shells on the service plate be
neath the cup. Seasonings go
right in the egg and this am
brosia is eaten with a spoon.
Americans prefer to hold the
egg in one hand, break the
shell in half with a sharp rap
of a knife and scoop out the in
sides into the cup. Again, the
shells are placed on the ser
vice plate.
Dear Mrs. Tobin: My wife
and I stayed for four nights in
a downtown hotel in Chicago.
How much tip should I have
left the room maid? — Harry
B.
Dear Harry: One dollar a
day is sufficient. If she gave
you extra service, such as
making up your room early
for your convenience or pro
viding you with extra towels
and so forth, $5 for the four
nights would have pleased
her. The best way to give her
the tip is to place the money in
an envelope and give it to her
personally. If you leave it on
the dresser she might miss it
if it’s her day off or her shift is
changed.
