Saints march
over the Bills
NEW ORLEANS (UPI) -The
following can be sung to the
tune of “Dixie."
“Way down South in the land

The Buffalo Bills usually play

Lock away, O. J.
The Saints are marching in.”
The New Orleans Saints—that
same football team that had 62
points scored against them this
year by the Atlanta Falcons
and lost 41-0 a couple of weeks
later to the San Francisco
49ers, but who turned it around
last week with an upset victory
over the Washington Redskins—
shut out the Buffalo Bills, 13-0,
Sunday.
In recording the club’s first
shutout in history, the Saints’
defense held O. J. Simpson to
eight yards in the first half.

impressed.
“I just want to forget this

The win kept Atlanta within

record to 7-3-1.

I have already proposed salary increases for garbage

I have already proposed a new zoning ordinance that

rezoning and rebuilding can add appearance &

Diego, Miami and New Orleans.
I don’t know what all that
means as far as today’s
ball game went. The defense
played well but the offense
didn’t move the ball at all.
“We didn’t get much field
position and that was about it,”
Saban said. “My concern now
is getting these guys together.
Otherwise we don’t have much
of a chance.”
Buffalo, in the same AFC
division with the defending
NFL champion Miami Dol
phins, is shooting for a wild
card spot in the playoffs. The
Bills are now 5-3 which is the
AFC’sfourth-best record.
“I can’t figure out why we
didn’t do better than we did,”
Simpson said. “Some people
are trying to blame it on our
airplane incident (the team’s
flight to New Orleans had to
put down in Cleveland). I don’t

first period in which they fired
13 shots at Detroit golie Doug
Grant. They got three shots in
each of the last two periods.
Randy Manery scored Atlan
ta’s first goal in the second per
iod and Rey Comeau added an
other tally in the third period.
Flames goalie Dan Bouchard
earned his second shutout of the
season, stopping 21 shots.
“When you’ve got momentum
going for you, you might get by
for one or two games,” said
Geoffrion. “Even if you only get

me.”
Simpson recovered to gain 50
yards on 11 carries in the third
quarter for a total of 79 yards.
He had compiled a rushing
record of 1,025 yards before
meeting the Saints, and would
have needed about 102 yards a
game to break the NFL season
record of 1,863 set by Jim
Brown of Cleveland in 1963.
New Orleans coach John
North would have liked one
more field goal, but he wasn’t
complaining.
“We wanted them to put the
ball in the air because they
don’t like to do that,” he said.
“They want to run with O. J.
and I don’t blame them. He’s a
great back but we shut him
down.”
While the New Orleans
defense received most of the
praise for the shutout, Saints
quarterback Archie Manning
connected on 16 of 33 passes for
178 yards, even though he
played more than half of the
game with a swollen hand.
“They really got some good
licks on me after I’d thrown the
ball,” he said. “I’m not saying
they were late hits, but they
were getting me right at the
time I threw.”
Manning was sacked four
times.
“Probably I was knocked
down more today than I ever
have been,” he said.
Manning threw the one nine
yard touchdown pass to Bob
Newland in the second quarter,
while Bill McClard kicked field
goals of 42 and 24 yards.
It was the fourth straight
home victory for the Saints,
who have four games away and
two in New Orleans left in the
season.
Cavaliers
get PM’
treatment
CLEVELAND (UPI) - The
Cleveland Cavaliers got the
“PM” treatment in the final
four minutes Sunday night as
they dropped their fourth
straight and tenth game in 12
NBA starts this season.
“PM” stands for Pete Mara
vich, the former LSU star who
came off the bench with 3:17
showing on the clock and poured
in 10 straight points to give the
Atlanta Hawks a 115-110 victory.
The Cavs who led 63-53 at
halftime, couldn’t find the hoop
in the second half. After Herm
Gilliam’s jump shot tied the
score at 102-102 for Atlanta, Mar
avich entered and it was his
fadeaway jumper from the com
er with 1:01 left that gave the
Hawks a 110-108 lead.
“I thought I played a terrible
game,” Maravich said. “I play
ed terrible defense and it was
just a bad game for me.”
Regardles , he finished with
a total of 30 points. Lou Hudson
missed his first three shots but
connected on 13 of his next 24
to take the game honor with 40
points. The veteran Atlanta for
ward flipped in 16 third quarter
points to pull the Hawks to with
in three, 86-83, going into the
final 12 minutes.
“I haven’t been shooting too
well lately but I always seem
to do well in Cleveland, ” Hudson
said.
The Cavs played their best of
fensive game of the year in the
first half when they hit on 47
per cent of their shots with Aus
tin Carr contributing 20 and Bob
Rule adding 15.
Cleveland captain Lenny Wil
kins, who moved into seventh
place on the all-time NBA foul
shooting list by tossing in six
free throws to up his career
total to 5,013, fouled out for the
second straight game.
“I have never fouled out in

couldn’t keep up the pace after
playing three games in a row.”

Hansen wins
two titles
By SAM MILLER
GAINESVILLE, Ga. (UPI) -
Jerry Hansen, the quiet,
friendly Minneapolis, Minn.,
stock broker who also drives
race cars, set the pace and the
records at this year’s Sports
Car Club of America (SCCA)
national championships—as he
did in 1972.
The 35-year-old Hansen went
two for two, winning the “B”
Sports Racing and Formula
“A” titles during the Champion
Spark Plug Racing Classic held
this weekend at Road Atlanta.
The championships were the
ninth and tenth of his career,
the most ever for a SCCA
driver. Hansen set records in
the 1972 SCCA finals winning an
unprecedented three titles.
Hansen’s Lola Chevy blazed
over the 2.52-mile Road Atlanta
course in the Formula “A”
race, averaging 113.11 miles
per hour. On an early lap,
Hansen, who says his goal is to
keep racing until he’s 70,
pushed the car to 115.26
breaking the class record he set
in 1970 by about seven miles an
hour.
Hansen took the early lead in

a head gasket.
Sharp, a New York City area
Datsun dealer and president of
the Bob Sharp Racing Team,

mechanical problems in each of
the three cars he piloted.
