COPE (Citizens Organized for
a Protected Environment) an
nounced it planned an
aggressive campaign to keep
Spalding County dry.
“It was out of respect for the
citizens who want this issue
settled that we chose not to take
legal action during the recent
‘cloak and dagger”
maneuverings relative to the
petition signatures and their
verification,” COPE spokes
man Dillard Wilbanks said.
He said he assumed Ordinary
Imes would be ready to allow
public inspection of the petitions
and signatures later this week
when COPE makes the request.
If permission is refused or if
an inspection should reveal
excessive irregularities, COPE
said it was prepared to go to
court and ask for an injunction
to force the ordinary to comply
with the law.
COPE asked that proponents
publicly identify their spokes
men and make available and
publish financial statement
showing contributions, pledges
and contributora.
