fornia’s wine country.
It was the sixth mass murder
case in California in the last
four years.
“We want to talk to them
because of the similarity of the
execution-style killings,” said
Sheriff Michael M. Canlis. He
said he has issued no warrants.
The bodies of Walter Parkin,
33, his wife, their two children
and five friends—all bound and
gagged—werefoundWednesday
inside Parkin’s new $65,000
ranch home in the sprawling
vineyards in north-central Cali
fornia. All had been shot in the
head at close range with a
revolver.
Safe is Empty
Parkin owned the only
grocery in the town of Victor, a
community of 270 persons three
miles east of here. A safe at
the store was opened normally
and emptied of all cash,
reportedly around $4,000.
“It looks like (he work of a
madman,” said the sheriff. “All
of them appear to have been
executed.”
He said the victims were tied
and gagged and it appeared to
be a “professional job.”
The two men wanted for
questioning were identified as
Luther Steelman, 28, Lodi, and
Douglas E. Gretzler, 22, New
York state.
Steelman was convicted in
San Joaquin County of forgery,
escaping from the county jail
and possession of marijuana
and glue sniffing. He served
time in a California Youth
Authority camp. Authorities in
Phoenix, Ariz., also were
seeking Steelman and Gretzler
for a s3l armed robbery and on
charges of rape and kidnap.
67 Victims
The nine slayings bring to 67
the number of victims in six
mass murders in California
within the last four years.
Suspects were caught in all five
earlier cases.
In addition to Parkin, the
other victims found inside the
master bedroom of his home
included his wife Joanne, 31;
their two children—Lisa, 11,
and Robert, 9; Debbie Earl, 18,
a babysitter; Richard A. and
Wanda Earl, parents of the
babysitter; Ricky Earl, 15,
Debbie’s brother, and Mark
Lang, 20, the babysitter’s
boyfriend.
Carol Jenkins, 18, who lived
in the Parkin house, apparently
was spared because she re
turned home after the killings
had occurred. She returned
from a date at 3 a.m. and went
to bed without knowledge of the
slayings.
The bodies were discovered
Wednesday morning by two
young men sent to the Parkin

Ginn pushes new facility
WASHINGTON (UPI)-Geor

Liquor auction
planned
ATLANTA (UPI)— The state
Department of Revenue will
auction off 497 cases of confis
cated liquor Nov. 14, the largest
sale of its kind in the depart
ment’s history.
The liquor, confiscated over a
period of six months, has a
wholesale value of $32,154, ac
cording to Revenue Commiss
ioner John Blackmon.
Only individuals and business
es holding Georgia licenses to
deal in distilled spirits will be
allowed to participate in the
auction, he said.
“We believe that this is one
of the largest amounts of con
fiscated liquor we have ever
auctioned at one time,” he said.

last week Hunter is one of three
sites being considered for the
Army Aviation Systems Com
mand (AVSCOM) now located
in downtown St. Louis, Mo.
Ginn, whose district includes
Savannah, made public a letter
he has sent to Georgia delega
tion members urging that they
join in efforts to bring the facil
ity to the Savannah base. Hun
ter was recently closed and
placed in caretaker status.
“The AVSCOM facility would
be an outstanding asset to the
entire state and I would be
most grateful for your active
efforts on behalf of the Hunter
location,” Ginn said in the let

The AVSCOM facility, where
planes and other Army aviation
equipment are tested, has a SSO
million a year payroll of 5,000
civilian employes, many of
them highly paid and highly
skilled, a spokesman for Ginn
said.
The facility might take up
some of the job slack caused by
cutbacks at the Lockheed plant
in Marietta, Ga., the spokesman
said.
Callway said no firm decision
has been made to move the fa
cility from St. Louis.
He said the Savannah base is
