Bombs
miss
Lon Nol
By United Press International
A Cambodian Air Force
warplane attacked President
Lon Nol’s government palace in
Phnom Penh today, dropping
two bombs and flying away,
witnesses said.
There were no immediate
damage reports and it was not
known if Lon Nol was inside the
ornate Chamcar Mon presiden
tial palace at the time of the
attack.
The Saigon military com
mand reported an upsurge of
fighting today in the vital
Mekong Delta, the rice basket
of South Vietnam, with 17
persons on both sides slain in
infantry and artillery clashes.
In Phnom Penh, the Cam
bodian command said Commu
nist-led insurgents showed signs
of weakening “after heavy
losses suffered during recent
fighting.”
Witnesses to the Phnom Penh
palace- attack said a propeller
driven T2B fighter-bomber
made two passes, dropping a
bomb on each run. They said
there was no antiaircraft fire
from the palace grounds and
the plane flew safely away.
It was the second air strike
against the presidential palace
this year. Last spring, a
nephew of exiled Cambodian
leader Prince Norodom Siha
nouk made a similar attack on
the palace, missing the main
building but hitting a barracks
on the ground and killing
several soldiers and their
family members.
