Malone, Foreman
expected to play
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Wrtier
ATLANTA (UPI) - Chuck
Foreman and Art Malone are
both expected to return to
action tonight when the Atlanta
Falcons host the unbeaten
Minnesota Vikings in the NFL’s
Monday night game.
Foreman, the rookie from
Miami (Fla.) who leads the
Vikings in rushing despite
missing the past two games
with a knee injury, insists he’s
“ready to go” tonight. Malone,
the Falcons’ inside bread-and
butter man who also has been
out two weeks, also is reported
“fit."
Atlanta (6-3), seeking its
sixth straight victory, needs
Malone at his best because the
Falcons have lost one and
maybe both of its wide
receivers. Ken Burrow, who
will undergo neck surgery, is
definitely out and Al Dodd, who
suffered a leg injury at
Tech, Georgia
take a week off
ATLANTA (UPI) - With
hard-fought, wooly wins behind
them, Georgia and Georgia
Tech take a week off before
finishing the season against
each other Dec. 1 when a
peach bowl bid for Georgia and
a winning year for Tech will be
riding on the outcome.
The Bulldogs erupted for
three touchdowns in an eight
minute span to beat the Auburn
Tigers 28-14 Saturday and win a
Peach Bowl bid, but one that is
contingent on a victory over the
Tech Yellow Jackets.
Tech, long out of contention
for the post-season berth, fought
Navy for a 26-22 win Saturday
night in Jacksonville, on the
strength of four Cam Bonifay
field goals.
Tech Coach Bill Fulcher has
made a better than .500 season
his team’s goal in recent weeks.
The Yellow Jackets are now 5-5
with the Georgia game the
regular season finisher for both
teams.
Georgia, now 5-4-1, assured
itself of a tenth straight “win
ning” season, something Coach
Vince Dooley admits he had
thought about, “just as a
sideline thing, though.”
“The important thing is that
we played a very fine football
team in Auburn and we won by
two touchdowns,” Dooley said.
“We’ve been up-and-down to
say the least, but this was the
most complete game we’ve
played all year.”
Senior quarterback Andy
Johnson, who had a hand in
all three closely bunched Geor
gia scores, played his final
game in Athens. Johnson

This may mean that Atlanta

means the Falcons will need all
the running they can muster.
The Vikings (9-0) have to be
favored, with or without Fore

been beaten this year, in
exhibition or regular season,
and you can’t argue with
success. They have appeared
exceptionally strong their last
two games —beating Cleveland

Minnesota has a balanced

the Vikings have a half dozen

Bowls have stake
in LSU, Tide clash
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
The Sugar Bowl and Orange
Bowl have a big stake in
Thursday night’s Alabama-
Louisiana State Southeastern
Conference title shootout at
Baton Rouge, LA.
With 2nd-ranked Alabama
paired against sth-ranked Notre
Dame in the Sugar and 7th
ranked LSU paired against 6th
ranked Penn State in the
Orange, the bowl interest is
obvious:
The one that gets the winner
of Thursday night’s game is the
only one that can match two
unbeaten teams —and thus
becomes this winter’s most
prestigious bowl.

yards, must be at top form if
the Falcons are to move the
baU.
The oft-told quarterback
situation regarding these two
teams is worth repeating.
Tarkenton played for six years
under Atlanta Coach Norm Van
Brocklin when Van Brocklin
coached the Vikings. Bob Lee,
the Falcons’ quarterback, was
Tarkenton’s backup man last
season and Bob Berry, Tarken
ton’s current understudy, was
Atlanta’s starting quarterback
the past several seasons.
Atlanta defensive end John
Zook said films indicate that
Tarkenton is no longer the
“scrambler” who used to upset
Van Brocklin.
“He doesn’t appear to run as
much as in the past and seems
to like to go with the short
game,” said Zook. “It’s im
proved the Vikings’ running
game that may be the best
we’ve faced all season.”
Alabama and LSU both have
9-0 records, but, even at Baton
Rouge, you’ve got to favor the
powerful Crimson Tide.
Alabama rolled over Miami
(Fla.), 43-13, Saturday for its
30th victory in its last 31
regular season games. Louisia
na State beat Mississippi State,
26-7.
Alabama, which Miami Coach
Pete Elliott called, “obviously
one of the best in the United
States,” toyed with the Hur
ricanes, jumping into a quick
22-0 lead and then rushing in
the reserves. The Crimson
Tide, which will be going after
its 500th victory Thursday, is
second nationally in total
offense (502 yards), rushing
(388), and scoring (44.2 ppg).
“This is the game everyone
wanted,” said Sguar Bowl
official Joe Katz when he
announced the Alabama-Notre
Dame matchup.
There is one other major
college game here in the South
on Thanksgiving. That’s an
afternoon game at Mobile, Ala.,
between Southern Mississippi,
which beat West Texas State,
28-0, and Utah State.
Next Saturday, Florida, 20-18
winner over Kentucky, will be
at Miami; Ole Miss, 28-18
winner over Tennessee meets
Mississippi State at Jackson;
Tennessee is at Kentucky; and
Vanderbilt, 24-3 loser to Tulane,

LSU psyched up
BATON ROUGE, La. (UPI)
— Most college football teams
start to wind down by the end
of November but LSU is still
psyched up and with good
reason.
The Tigers, now 9-0, face
second-ranked Alabama in
Baton Rouge on Thanksgiving,
travel to New Orleans for a
meeting with 19th-ranked Tu
lane Dec. 1 and finish off the
year with the Orange Bowl and
sixth-ranked Penn State.
The Tigers will be giving up
their Thanksgiving to meet
Alabama and they gave up
their Sunday to prepare for it.
For the first time since he
became coach in 1962, Charlie
McClendon sent his LSU squad
through the workout after a
Saturday game. McClendon
said the session was a
“combination Monday-Tuesday
drill.
“We have a job of monumen
tal proportions cut out for us,”
by Chattanooga.
Next Saturday, Florida, 20-18
winner over Kentucky, will be
at Miami; Ole Miss, 28-18
winner over Tennessee meets
Mississippi State at Jackson;
Tennessee is at Kentucky; and
Vanderbilt, 24-3 loser to Tulane,
will host Tampa, upset, 25-24,
by Chattanooga.
Also, Memphis State, 41-6
winner over Southwest Louisia
na, will be at Cincinnati;
Tulane visits Maryland; and
South Carolina, 52-12 conquerer
of all-losing Florida State, hosts
Clemson.
In other action this past
Saturday, Georgia scored three
touchdowns in an 8:23 span of
the second period to beat
Auburn, 28-14; and Georgia
Tech nipped Navy, 26-22.
The Southeastern Conference
may have five bowl teams. In
addition to Alabama and LSU,
Tennessee, despite its loss to
Ole Miss, was paired against
Texas Tech in the Gator Bowl;
Auburn, despite its loss to
Georgia, was paired against
Missouri in the Sun Bowl; and
Georgia was advised that a
victory over Georgia Tech in
Atlanta Dec. 1 would return the
Bulldogs to Atlanta to play
Maryland in the Peach Bowl.
Hawks
regain
lead
ATLANTA (UPI) — The At
lanta Hawks moved a half
game back in front of the
Central Division standings of
the National Basketball
Association even though they
were idle Sunday.
The Hawks began the day in
a tie with the Capital Bullets.
But the Bullets were beaten by
the Buffalo Braves 112-101 and
fell off the pace.
The Hawks have led the divi
sion most of the season, but
were forced into a deadlock
when they lost to the Bullets
115-109 Saturday night.
Atlanta now is 10-8 .556 and
Capital is 8-7 .533.
The Hawks remain idle until

he said. “Alabama has got to
be the finest football team in
America. I don’t care what the
polls say—any time a team can
average more than 513 yards
total offense and 44 points
game, you’ve got to figure
they’re as tough as they come.”
The Bengals defeated Missis
sippi State 26-7 Saturday but
the score was finalized by
halftime.
“Our dressing room wasn’t
hectic, even with being able to
celebrate going to the Orange
Bowl against unbeaten (Penn)
State,” McClendon said.
“They weren’t happy with the
way they played but that was
my fault. I took the juice out of
them. I told them to ease up
because I wanted to give our
top people a chance to rest and
come back strong enough for
practice Sunday afternoon. I
didn’t feel like it was going to
be spectacular game but we’ll
need a spectacular game
against Alambama.”
Mississippi State Coach Bob
Tyler said of the upcoming
Tiger game against the Crim
son Tide, “I’d rather not make
a comparison. I’ll do that
Thursday night.”

Flames
fading
BOSTON (UPl)—The Atlanta
Flames are beginning to fade in
the National Hockey league’s
Western Division race, and
Coach Bernie Geoffrion is con

loss. “We’re just not skating
well.”
Atlanta, which threatened to
