Biggest game ever
for ‘Cholly Mac 9
BATON ROUGE, La. (UPI)
— Charles Youmans McClendon
is an institution in I>ouisiana,
although folks don’t know him
by that name.
Instead they call him “Cholly
Mac” or just plain “Mac” and
they are counting on him to
direct Louisiana State to a
Thanksgiving Day win over
Bear Bryant’s Alabama team.
Sitting behind his cluttered
desk in his purple carpeted
office, McClendon says the
Alabama game will be the
biggest game for any of the
teams he has had in his 12
years as head coach at IjSU.
“This is probably the biggest
game I’ve had as far as a team
is concerned,” McClendon said.
“I may have had other games
that meant more to me
personally.
“It’s a case now that we’re
playing for the Southeastern
Conference championship and
then certainly for the national
prestige that goes along with
the wiinner.”
This then makes it the
biggest game of Cholly Mac’s
biggest season as head coach at
LSU.
His seventh rated Tigers are
9-0, the same as second ranked
Alabama. It is the first time
LSU has won its first nine
games since Paul Dietzel’s 1958
team which went undefeated
and won the national champion-

Although his teams have
never had a losing year and
have won nine games in six of
his seasons, McClendon has
never won a national champion
ship nor has he had a perfect
season.
But McClendon’s a patient
man. He waited 10 years for
the head job at LSU, serving
that time as a defensive
assistant. Before coming to
LSU, McClendon was an
assistant for one year at both
Kentucky and Vanderbilt.
He was a defensive end,
offensive and cornerback on
Bryant’s 1948-50 Kentucky
teams but McClendon says
although he played and coached
under Bryant he has never
tried to imitate him.

“You better be yourself and

The 50-year-old McClendon

But his hair is thinning and
the years have begun to show
on Cholly Mac’s midsection. He
ruefully admits to weighing 235
pounds, some 50 pounds above
his playing weight.

Falcons are real
ATLANTA (UPI) - The At
lanta Falcons are for real.
It’s been a long, sometime
tortuous, climb from mediocrity
to becoming an NFL contender.
But the Falcons made it.
It seems like ancient history
now. But, it has been only six
weeks since the Falcons were
floundering, at 1-3, and a lot of
people were screaming for
Coach Norm Van Brocklin’s
scalp.
You would never have known
such a climate existed if you
had been in Atlanta Stadium
Monday night when the Falcons
chalked up their sixth straight
victory by knocking off the pre
viously unbeaten Minnesota Vik
ings.
Pandemonium, joyous pande
monium, reigned from the mo
ment when the first Falcon start
er was introduced until quarter
back Bob Lee fell on the ball to
run out the clock.
Atlanta fans had waited, not
always patiently, for eight years
for the Falcons to come of age.
And, Monday night, they cele
brated.
Ask the Falcons for the secret
of the six-game winning streak
and most will answer, “Bob
Lee.”
Bob Lee is a fifth-year pro
quarterback who was the Vik
ings’ 16th-round draft choice af
ter he finished his college career
at the University of Pacific in
1968. He started only nine
games in four seasons at Minne
sota, riding the bench last year
when Fran Tarkenton returned
to the Vikings.
Lee, now 28, saw no future for
himself with the Vikings and was
really pleased when he was
dealt to Atlanta as partial pay
ment for Bob Berry, the former
Falcon starter who is now Tar
kenton’s understudy.
Unfortunately, for Lee and for
the Falcons, he hurt his throw
ing hand in training camp when
he slammed it against a team-
mate’s helmet and Dick Shiner
beat him out.
Shiner hurt his shoulder mid
way through game No. 4, when
San Francisco handed Atlanta
its third straight loss and the
Falcons hit their low ebb of the
season. Lee took over, and al
though Atlanta didn’t win, he
appeared to spark the Falcons’
offense.
The next week, Lee guided
the Falcons to a 46-6 triumph
over the Chicago Bears, Shiner
was waived to the New England
Patriots, and Atlanta was on its
way up the NFL ladder.
“Bob Lee’s play has given us
a lift,” Van Brocklin said early
in the current winning streak.
“The whole team now feels
we’re going to make the plays
instead of missing. He inspires
everybody, the whole football
operation.”
Lee accepts the fact that the
burden of offense rests on his
shoulders but he feels he’s re
ceived too much credit.
“I’ve been saying for six
weeks that we have a great of
fensive line,” said Lee, who
wasn’t dumped a single time
Monday night. “Maybe now
somebody will believe me.
They’re getting better and bet
ter.”
And Lee wants the Falcons’
defense to get the lion’s share
of credit for Atlanta’s success.
“What more can you ask
from them? ” asked Lee after the
Falcons held the Vikings to only
13 yards rushing in the first
half.
Atlanta’s iunning game also
is sound. Dave Hampton has
750 yards, a pace that should
put him over the 1,000 mark he
missed last year by only five
yards, and fullbacks Art Ma
lone and Eddie Ray have com
bined for 560.
The Falcons, now 73, will
be favored to win their last four
regular season games and earn
the wildcard berth in the NFC
playoffs.

Pete Rose named
Most Valuable
NEW YORK (UPI) - Pete
Rose was named the Most
Valuable Player in the National
League today and he was
jumping for joy, but Willie
Stargell was just jumping mad
and wondering what he had to
do to win.
“I’m the happiest guy in the
world,” said Rose, the peppery
captain of the Cincinnati Reds
who batted .338 to win his third
batting title.
“It’s really great because it
was a letdown not to win the
playoffs and get into the World
Series,” he added. “This picks
me up and helps me through
the winter. I can’t wait to get
started playing baseball again

Pittsburgh’s Stargell, the

Stargell:
“I had planned I wasn’t

“I know Pete's the kind of

It was the closest MVP vote
