Mrs. Mann
Mrs. Nell Reeves Mann,
widow of Mr. T. Ezra Mann,
died Thursday night at the
Living Center of Griffin where
she had been a patient for
several months.
Mrs. Mann was bom in Pike
County, moving to Griffin 56
years ago. She attended school
at Baylor in Chattanooga,
Tenn., and attended Wellesley
College in Boston, Mass. Mrs.
Mann studied in Switzerland
and Paris, France and was
graduated from the
Presbyterian School of Nursing
in New York. Mrs. Mann was a
registered nurse here for a long
number of years. She was a
member of the First United
Methodist Church.

Mrs. Mann was selected as
Griffin’s first Woman of the
Year in 1947 and was honored at
this time.
She is survived by a daughter,
Mrs. Carl H. Cartledge, Jr., of
Griffin; a daughter-in-law, Mrs.
Thomas L. Mann of Greenville,
S. C., and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services will be
conducted Saturday afternoon
at 3:30 o’clock in the chapel of
Pittman Rawls Funeral Home.
The Rev. Dumas B. Shelnutt
will officiate and burial will be
in Oak Hill cemetery. The body
will remain at the funeral home.
Friends may visit the family
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
CarlH. Cartledge, Jr., 1131 Pine
Valley road.
Mrs. Walker
Mrs. Helen Griffin Walker of
228 East College street, wife of
Paul H. Walker, died early this
morning at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital after an illness of
several years.
Mrs. Walker was bom in
Sunny Side, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. W. B. “Bill” Griffin, and
moved to Griffin with her
parents when a small child.
She was a communicate of St.
George’s Episcopal Church
where she served as organist
for 27 years. Mrs. Walker
taught elementary grades in the
Griffin School System and then
did substitute teaching for
several years. She was a
charter member of the Griffin
Music Club where she served as
president. Mrs. Walker was a
former member of the Griffin
Woman’s Club, Pulaski
Chapter, Daughters of Ameri
can Revolution, and Boynton
Chapter, United Daughters of
Confederacy.
In addition to her husband,
she is survived by a daughter,
Mrs. O. Ash “Katherine” Childs
of Pelham, N. H.; a son, Paul H.
Walker, Jr., of Griffin; eight
grandchildren, Miss Sally
Walker, Miss Paula Walker and
Miss Jane Walker, all of Griffin,
Miss Helen Head, Miss Paula
Head, John W. Head, Miss
Vicky Childs and James A.
Childs, all of Pelham, N. H.;
two nieces, Mrs. John H. Ward,
Jr., of Griffin and Miss Mary C.
Griffin of Atlanta.
Funeral services will be
conducted Saturday afternoon
at 2 o’clock from St. George’s
Episcopal Church. The Rev.
Douglas Winn will officiate and
burial will be in Oak Hill
cemetery. In lieu of flowers the
family requests those desiring
make contributions to the
Griffin Music Club’s scholar
ship fund or St. George’s
Episcopal Church memorial
fund.
Friends may visit the family
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Paul H. Walker, Jr., 515 East
College street. Pittman Rawls
Funeral Home is in charge of
plans.
Mrs. Hammond
Funeral services for Mrs.
Rose Lee Hammond of 418
South Ninth street will be held
Saturday morning at 11 o’clock
from the Mt. Zion Baptist
Church. The Rev. O. H. Stinson
will officiate and burial will be
in Union cemetery. The body
will lie in state at the church for
one hour prior to the funeral.
Survivors include a daughter,
Ms. Naomi Rucker of Griffin; a
brother, John K. Purser of
Ohio; six grandchildren, in
cluding Mrs. Olsa Laston and
Miss Alice Rucker, both of
Griffin; 18 great-grandchildren,
five great-great-grandchildren;
and two sons-in-law, Luke
Rucker and Monroe Walker,
both of Griffin.
Friends may visit the family
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Rucker, 561 South Eighth street.
McDowell United Funeral
Home is in charge of plans.
State plans
MACON, Ga. (UPI) - State
officials said Thursday that Ge
orgia will enter competition in
the 1974 Tournament of Roses
Parade at Pasadena, Calif., for
the seventh straight year.
The float and related expenses
will cost about $22,500, and will
be paid for by the state.
Mrs. Hall
Funeral services for Mrs.
Sallie Hagans Hall, 84, of Route
One, Hampton, will be con
ducted Saturday afternoon at 2
o’clock from the Wildwood
Baptist Church where she was a
member. The Rev. Guy E.
Starrett and the Rev. Cecil Dix
will officiate and burial will be
in Griffin Memorial Gardens.
In addition to her children she
is survived by 37 grandchildren,
36 great-grandchildren and
three great-great
grandchildren.
The body will remain at
Haisten Funeral Home until
carried to the church to lie in
state 30 minutes prior to the
funeral.
Jones Infant
Little Meredeth Patrice
Jones, three years old, died
Thursday morning at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 2:30
o’clock from the graveside in
Rest Haven cemetery. The Rev.
A. G. Conyer will officiate.
Survivors include her mother,
Portia Verdell Jones; grand
mother, Mrs. Paralie Barlow
Jones; grandfather, Robert
Jones; and several aunts and
uncles.
Spalding Undertaking
Company is in charge of plans.

Mr. Turner
Mr. Hollis Turner, 38, of
Miami, Fla., formerly of Pike
County, died Monday in Miami.
Survivors include two sons,
Ralph Turner and Willie Floyd
Turner, both of Atlanta;
mother, Mrs. Marie Turner;
grandmother, Mrs. Esther
Atkins; two sisters, Mrs. Trudie
Mae Slade and Mrs. Esther
Lovett; and a brother, Charlie
Turner, all of Griffin.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home pending the
arrival of the body. Friends
may visit the family at the
home of Mrs. Marie Turner, 505
Circus street.
Moose meet
here tonight
Griffin Moose Lodge will
meet tonight at 8 o’clock at the
lodge.
Plans for getting the voters
out for Tuesday’s liquor
referendum election will
highlight the session.
A report on the recent held
meeting of the Chattahoochee
Valley Council, which Griffin is
a member, will be made.
A drive for additional
members in honor of State
Deputy North Moose Joe Akins,
a member of Griffin Lodge, will
get under way.

GEORGIA, SPALDING COUNTY.
Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the “Revenue Tax Act to Legalize
and Control Alcoholic Beverages and Liquors.” (Acts. 1937-38. Ext. Sess. pp.
103, 104 et seq. as amended), an election will be held on the 4th day of
December, 1973 to determine if a majority of the electors of Spalding County
favor the taxing, legalizing and controlling alcoholic beverages and liquors
in said county.
Voting shall be from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. at the usual polling places and the
ballot shall read:
SHALL ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES AND LIQUORS BE TAXED,
LEGALIZED AND CONTROLLED IN SPALDING COUNTY?
YES( ) NO ( )
Those desiring to vote in favor of taxing, legalizing and controlling
alcoholic beverages and liquors shall vote “Yes”. Those desiring to vote
against taxing, legalizing and controlling alcoholic beverages and liquors
shall vote “No”.
