Curci named SEC
coach of the year
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) — When
Fran Curci became head coach
at the University of Kentucky
this year, he took a soft-sell
approach.
His predecessor, John Ray,
had been a cheerleader who
spoke of such things as national
championships, but was never
better than 3-8 in four seasons.
“I’ve come to Kentucky to
build,” said Curci, who was
head coach at Tampa and
Miami of Florida before mov
ing to Kentucky. “It’s not the
sort of thing one does over
night.”
But Kentucky, under Curci,
posted a 5-6 record —leading
top-ranked Alabama and
eighth-ranked Louisiana State
at halftime and losing its last
two games (to Florida and
Tennessee) by only two points
each.
For his accomplishment at
Kentucky this season, Fran
Curci today was named South
eastern Conference coach of the
year by United Press Interna
tional.
Curci, a star quarterback at
the University of Miami (Fla.)
in the late ‘sos although he
weighed only 152 pounds, was
the runaway choice of sport
swriters and sportscasters from
throughout the seven-state SEC
region. He won by a wide
margin over Alabama Coach
Bear Bryant who was last
year’s selection and who

appears to have the national
championship team this season.
Their reasoning was obvious.
Everyone knew that Bryant
was going to have another
great team, but few expected
Curci to come so close to a
winning season in his first year
at Kentucky, where they
haven’t had a winner since
1965.
Curci acknowledges that
many of the players who helped
Kentucky this fall were recruit
ed during Ray’s regime. But he
had a lot of freshmen playing
and, as junior quarterback
Ernie Lewis pointed out early
in the season, “Coach Curci is
getting more out of us this
year.”
It was Lewis who complained
in pre-season that Ray had
been “defensive oriented” and
who noted that Curci “has
given our offense new confi
dence by giving us more
direction.”
The Wildcats served notice
that they were on the road up
in the second game of the
season when they led Alabama,
14-0, at halftime, before bowing,
28-14.
“We feel that our front line
troops were on par with
theirs,” said Curci. “But we
just didn’t have enough players.
Alabama’s tremendous depth
simply wore us out in the
second half.”
The Wildcats ran up 42 points
on Mississippi State and, two
weeks later, jumped into a 21-7
lead over Louisiana State
before that lack of depth caught
up with them again.
The very next week, Ken
tucky upset Georgia, 12-7, and
followed that with a 34-7 victory
over previously unbeaten Tula
ne.
Fumbles crippled the Wild
cats in their game with Florida,
but they had the Gators
hanging on for their lives
before time ran out in a 20-18
contest. Last week, in their
season finale, the Wildcats
missed a 34-yard field goal in
the closing minute of a 16-14
loss to Gator Bowl-bound
Tennessee.
Kentucky had only 16 seniors
this past season and only about
half of those were playing
regularly. Sonny Collins, who
won the SEC rushing title with
1,213 yards, is only a
sophomore, and Doug Kotar,
the Wildcats’ No. 2 runner, is
the only senior among the
offensive backs.
The Wildcats’ most serious
losses will be 255-pound middle
guard Jim McCollum and
defensive back Darryl Bishop,
both all-SEC choices.
Curci first became a head
varsity coach at Tampa in 1968
and in three years at the
Spartans’ helm had 7-3, 8-2 and
10-1 records. That 1970 record
included a 31-14 victory over
Miami and he moved at the end
of that season back to his alma
mater where his two-year
record was 4-7 and 5-6.
Gamecocks pulling
for a Tech victory
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) - If it were
legal, the South Carolina Game
cocks probably would like to aid
Georgia Tech Saturday.
If the Yellow Jackets, whom
the Gamecocks beat in a sea
son opener, upset the University
of Georgia in a season finale,
South Carolina would back into
a Peach Bowl date with Mary
land.
Butthe oddsmakers figure the
Georgia Bulldogs (5-4-1) will
knock off the Yellow Jackets
(5-5) and return here them
selves Dec. 28 to play the 17th
ranked Terps in that Peach
Bowl game.
Georgia-Georgia Tech is a
shoot out any time the two state
Schools meet. Their natural
rivalry alone is enough to as
sure that. But with Georgia’s
bowl bid and a winning season
for both at stake, a little extra
zest has been added for Satur
day’s game.
A standing room crowd of
more than 60,000 is expected for
the 2 p.m. EST contest.

ATLANTA — Detroit goalie, Doug Grant ends up at the
bottom of a second period pileup in the net and on top of
the puck. In the net with him is Flames’ Leon Rochefort.
Flames are making
Boomer cardiac case
ATLANTA (UPI) — Bernie
“Boom Boom” Geoffrion says
“Last year (when Georgia
beat Liberty Bowl-bound Tech,
27-7) they were the spoiler,”
said Jackets Coach Bill Fulcher.
“ Ijet’s hope that this time, we’ll
be the spoiler.”
But Fulcher accepts the un
derdog role. “We’ve been im
pressed with Georgia all season
long,” he said. “Georgia has
had the makings of a real fine
football team. They were close
to beating Alabama (14-28), lost
to Florida (10-11) against all
odds and are coming into our
game off their best performance
(beating Auburn, 28-14).”
Georgia has beaten Tech the
past two years, winning, 28-24,
in a Thanksgiving night thriller
in 1971, and Saturday marks the
final regular season appearance
for some of the top players
from those two games.
Georgia Tech quarterback Jim
Stevens, thrust into a starting
role for last year’s game at
Georgia after Eddie McAshan
was suspended, is anxious to
make amends for last year’s
poor showing.
Stevens has completed 105 of
his Atlanta Flames are making
him a cardiac case.
192 passes for 1,354 yards this
season but only four of those
were for touchdowns and he’s
been intercepted 13 times.
That’s a lot better than quar
terback Andy Johnson has done
for run - conscious Georgia.
Johnson also has run for 430
yards and Stevens has a net on
the ground of only 48.
Jimmy Poulos leads Georgia
rushers with 594 yards. Cleo
Johnson, who has been injured,
tops Georgia Tech with 431.
Tech and Georgia have had
only two common foes this sea
son — Tennessee and Auburn.
The Vols beat Tech, 20-14, and
lost to Georgia, 35-31, while Au
burn, which lost to Georgia also,
beat Tech, 24-10.
“We told Georgia after the
Auburn game that the Peach
Bowl bid was theirs if they beat
Georgia Tech,” said a Peach
Bowl spokesman. “But, if Geor
gia loses, South Carolina (7 4)
is in.”

Thursday night’s 4-3 win over
the Detroit Red Wings before
13,128 fans in the Omni is an
example of Geoffrion’s dilem
ma. The Flames jumped to a 4-
0 lead and then had to hold on
for victory.
“If I have to battle like that
to make the playoffs, no way.
I’ll be dead,” said Geoffrion
after the match. “I’m going to
ask the doctor to come and
check my heart.”
The victory boosted Atlanta
into second place in the
National Hockey League’s
Western Division with 26 points,
one more than the idle Chicago
Black Hawks.
Chuck Arnason scored the
Flames’ first two goals 62
seconds apart in the first period
and Curt Bennett added another
to put Atlanta ahead 3-0 at the
first intermission. Defenseman
Pat Quinn scored an unassisted
goal early in the second period
to push the score to 4-0.
“We were outstanding, every
body was skating,” Geoffrion
said of the Flames’ perfor
mance to that point. “But, all
of a sudden—psst! No skating.”
Detroit rallied for three goals
by Marcel Dionne, Guy Charron
and Henry Boucha and had the
Flames frantically scrambling
to stave off a tie or a defeat.
They were spared a tie because
a second-period Detroit goal
was voided by officials who
ruled it came after the buzzer
had sounded to end the period.
Geoffrion said the Red Wings’
rally was sparked by bad
passing and mental lapses by
the Flames.
“I don’t blame the kid
(Atlanta goaltender Dan Bou
chard) for any of those goals
tonight,” he said. ‘‘We just
gave the goals tthem.”
To Spalding County Citizens:
As individual citizens we would like to
urge you to vote for legalized and
controlled liquor on December 4th. We
understand that strict controls will be
placed on the number of package stores,
the applicants, and the locations. After all,
are we voting to be “Wet or Dry” or to be
“Legal or Illegal?” If we are realistic, we
know that we are already wet. Doesn’t it
make sense to have alcohol here legally
rather than illegally so that Spalding
County may benefit from this means of
revenue rather than Fulton County?
Increased income could mean more
improvement in our school system.
Our future holds nothing but increased
taxes and utility increases unless we have
new sources of revenue. The tax and
license fees could save all of us many,
many dollars each year in taxes and utility

Finally, take a look at all the baseball
