Collins, Lowe
players of year
ATLANTA (UPI) — Running
back Sonny Collins of Kentucky
and linebacker Woodrow Lowe
of Alabama, both sophomores,
were picked Thursday by
United Press International as
the top football players in the
Southeastern Conference in
1973.
Collins, a 194-pounder from
Madisonville, Ky., who led the
league in rushing with 1,213
yards, was named SEC offen
sive player of the year, while
Lowe, a 213-pounder from
Phoenix, Ala., was named the
SEC defensive player of the
year.
The selections were made in
balloting by sportswriters and
sportscasters throughout the
seven-state region.
Collins fell 99 yards shy of
the SEC rushing record of 1,312
yards set by John Dottley of
Ole Miss in 1949, but his total
was the second highest in
league history.
Lowe, who played little as a
freshman last season, was

tonight
By United Press International
Alabama’s Crimson Tide,
already at the high water mark
in football, sends its basketball
team in search of the flood
gates tonight in Atlanta.
The Tide, ranked 17th in the
pre-season ratings, launches its
season against a Georgia Tech
team that is rebuilding under
new coach Dwane Morrison.
Alabama returns three start
ers including 6-foot-10
sophomore center Leon Dou
glas, from the squad that went
22-8 and finished fourth in the
National Invitation Tournament
last year.
Tech, 8-17 last year under
Coach Whack Hyder, who
retired after 22 years, starts
four sophomores and a junior.
“If Barna gets hot, they could
blow us off the floor,” said
Morrison, a former South
Carolina star who posted a 48-
20 record in three years at
Mercer. “I don’t look for that
to happen, though.”
Georgia also begins its season
under a new coach tonight,
hosting LSU-New Orleans. John
Guthrie, a Georgia assistant
elevated to the top post after
Babe McCarthy took over from
the fired Ken Rosemond and
then quit to return to the
American Basketball Associa
tion, fields a lineup of mostly
new faces, including South
Carolina transfer Ed Peterson.
Other opening games tonight
have Tennessee entertaining
North Texas State, Hofstra at
Florida State, 16th-ranked Jack
sonville versus St. John’s and
Auburn against Clemson in the
Clemson Tip-Off Tournament.
Saturday night, llth-ranked
Kentucky hosts Miami of Ohio,
20th-ranked South Carolina

State, College of Charleston at
Mississippi State, Mississippi at
Texas and Vanderbilt at Rice.

Bear has no trouble
getting Tide charged
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
Bear Bryant should have no
trouble getting his top-ranked
Crimson Tide charged up for
Saturday’s season finale with
underdog Auburn.
Auburn fans have been doing
that job for him ever since the
Tigers pulled off that 17-16 up
set last season by scoring on
two consecutive blocked punts
in the closing five minutes.
For a year, Alabama players
have had to look at those “Punt
Barna Punt” bumper stickers
on Auburn cars and even if their
fifth perfect season and third na
tional championship of the past
13 years wasn’t at stake, the
Crimson Tide would be ready
for Saturday’s game.
Alabama (10-0) is heavily fav
ored over the Tigers (6-4). They
have beaten all four teams
which beat the Tigers and they
are second nationally in total
offense and third in both rush
ing and scoring.
But that upset of ’72 should
have a lot of folks watching
Saturday’s game, both in Legion
Field in Birmingham, Ala., and
on national television (ABC, 6:05
p. m. est).
