Finley to battle
Kuhn in court
CHICAGO (UPI) - Charles
0. Finley, controversial owner
of the Oakland A’s, says he’s
going to push a head-to-head
court battle with Baseball
Commissioner Bowie Kuhn over
fines Kuhn levied against him
for his antics during the 1973
World Series.
Finley said Friday that Kuhn
exceeded his authority in
issuing $7,000 in “unjustifed”
fines and placing him on
probation. Finley suggested
that the commissioner was
trying to “ingratiate himself”
with major league baseball
players at his expense.
Finley announced he will file
an appeal of the fines in federal
court, either in New York or in

Ken Coggins and John

Finley said, however, that his

Jackets
ATLANTA (UPI) - The Ala
bama basketball team, making
a drive to achieve equity with
its school’s football success,
erupted early in the second half
Friday night to beat Georgia
Tech 88-64 in the opening game
of the season for both.
Alabama, which went to the
NIT last year and is expected
to contend for the Southeastern
Conference this year, led only
42-39 at halftime as Coach C. M.
Newton experimented with var
ious lineups.
But Newton stuck with the
same five players, during the
first ten minutes of the second
half when the Tide vaulted into
a 20 point lead.
Alabama had six players in
double figures headed by fresh
man P. R. Dunn who had 16.
Tech sophomore Ken Peters was
high scorer in the game with 17.

Mahan: rodeo’s Aaron
By Murray Olderman
SAN FRANCISCO - (NEA)
— The life of Larry Mahan is
wrapped up in eight-second
spurts. He's a rodeo cowboy,
the best gol-durned cowboy
in the whole wide world and
maybe the best ever who
bounced his buttocks on the
bare back of a bucking bronc
or bull.
It takes just eight seconds
out of the chute to determine
if he’s going to last the ride or
dig his snout into the dirt
under the animal’s pawing
hooves.
It’s dangerous and it’s ex
citing and for Larry Mahan
at least it is rewarding be
cause at the age of 29 he has
made $450,000 in prize
money, pilots his own
airplane, a 310 Cessna, and
drives seven cars ranging
from a ’32 Chevy (his pride) to
an El Dorado.
Heading for the National
Finals in Oklahoma City the
first week in December, Lar
ry had already clinched his
sixth world all-around cow
boy championship, which is a
little like Henry Aaron
breaking Babe Ruth’s home
run record. It’s a helluva
comeback story, too, because
Larry won the first five in a
row until he was sidetracked
the last couple of years by a
broken leg and a torn bicep
muscle
And the beautiful thing
about this cowboy, who has a
lop-sided grin and a tousled
mane, is that he’s still, essen
tially. a cowboy Even in a
question-and-answer session:
What would you be if you
weren't a rodeo performer”
“Anything from a truck
driver to a post-hole digger. 1
went to my first rodeo when I
was 13 and won the calf rid
ing event, got a belt buckle
and $6 and said, ‘l'm going to
be a cowbov the rest of mv
life.’”
How do you psyche yourself
up for a rodeo ride?
“I draw a mental picture of
what 1 should do. Behind the
chutes, the last hour or two,
you’re walking around going
through the physical moves
that it takes to ride a really
tough animal. You see your
self with a free hand and how
you move your arm to keep
the body in the correct posi
tion. You can't predict an
animal, like say a bull that
spins to the right, because if
he reacts the other way then
I’m on the ground. I draw the
picture of this bull if he’s
spinning right and also have
Plan B if he goes to the left.
You think about it enough so
that it happens automat
ically. It’s like a boxer if he
trains enough so that when
the other guys drops one
hand, you know what you’re
going to do.”
What goes through your
mind the few seconds you’re
on an animal?
“If I’m right mentally, ag-

gressive and determined, I
have a goal for that eight
second ride. Like in bull rid
ing, when the gate comes
open, it’s important to get
tapped off with the animal. I
know I’m going to scoot up
there and have my body
tilted ahead a certain num
ber of degrees so that when
he jumps out and kicks, it’s
going to set me back. Within
the first jump, if I've
miscalculated and get too far
back, I have to go to scram
bling.
“And you can think about
all of this while it’s happen
ing.”
Has there been one
memorable ride?
“My best ride was at
Denver a few years ago when
I marked 93 points on a really
rank bull. This was in 1966
and the first time I really
realized you draw out this
mental picture.”
What’s been the low spot?
“When I was six inches into
the mud in Sidney, lowa. I've
been there a few times.
That's one thing about rodeo.

Does a rodeo performer

in football, when a guy gets
