dedication Sunday
The Orchard Hill Baptist
Church at Swint and Walker’s
Mill road will have a dedication
service tomorrow afternoon
beginning at 2:30 p.m. The Rev.
George Phillips, former pastor,
will be the speaker.
Open house will begin at 4
p.m. and a revival will open at
the 7:30 p.m. service.

The Orchard Hill Missionary
Baptist Church was organized
in March, 1885 at Orchard Hill
by the Rev. Robert J.
Willingham, the Rev. G. H.
Perdue, the Rev. J. A. Jackson
and the Rev. A. C. Whittle.
The Friendship Baptist
Church was the sponsor. The
Honorable Andrew J. Whalen,
Jr., Judge of the Superior Court
of Spalding County, Georgia, in
accordance with the applicable
provisions of the Georgia
Business Corporation Code. The
registered office of the
corporation is located at 630

Rev. Willingham had been
leading services in the M. E.
church and led the effort to
build the wood frame church on
Camp road in 1885.
The Rev. A. C. Whittle of
Macon became the first pastor
and served about two years.
Membership grew to about 50
and the house of worship on
Camp road was built and paid
for during his ministry.
The original building has been
in constant use until 1973 with
only the addition of Sunday
School rooms.

Semco
finds
site
The Semco balloon company
which moved to Griffin several
months ago has been issued a
building permit to construct a
plant near the Bordon company
here.
The permit was for a $23,000
structure.
It was among the 48 permits
in November in Spalding
County which totaled $496,679.
Permits for 11 homes totaled
$314,300 while permits for 22
mobile homes totaled $113,085.
Permits for 13 additions
totaled $46,294.
One swimming pool permit
was valued at $4,500.

of the Flint River Baptist
Association Sept. 20, 1887,
meeting at the Sardis Church in
Henry County.
The church became a
member of the association,
giving an offering of $2 for
missions and $1 for minutes.
The congregation broke
ground for the new building in
1972. After a construction delay,
the new building was completed
in the spring of this year.
Leaders in local United
Methodist Churches in the 13-
county area, comprising the
Griffin District, will meet at
Griffin First United Methodist
Church, tomorrow afternoon
and evening. There are 110 local
churches in the district served
by 47 pastors.
The District Conference will
begin at 3:00 p.m. under the
direction of the Rev. Neal
Windom, District Superin
tendent.
Fifteen workshops for local
church leaders will be held
under the direction of members
of the District Council on
Ministries and invited resource
leaders.
Included in the resource
leaders will be Dr. Robert
Lundy, Executive Director of
the Southeastern Jurisdictional
Council of The United Methodist
Church. He will assist in section
on evangelism.
Dr. Alex Porteus, with the
Commission on Com
munications Evanston, Illinois,
will lead area on missions. Dr.
Candler Budd, and Rev. Burrell
Dinkins of Atlanta will be
resource leaders for workshop
for pastors-wives.
The Rev. William Holt, editor
of The Wesleyan Christian
Advocate, and Bill Knight of
The Griffin Daily News will lead
group on the public relations.
The evening worship,
beginning at 6:56, will feature a
150 voice youth choir under the
direction of Tom Roberts,
director of music at Griffin
First Church. Dr. Loren Young,
Southeastern Director, The
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
will be guest preacher.
The Rev. Dumas Shelnutt,
host pastor, and the staff of the
local church have made
detailed plans to host the 600
persons who have pre
registered.

Mr. Durham
Funeral services for Mr.
Heziakiah Durham of 114 Leo
street, Griffin, will be held
Sunday at 3 p.m. from the
Eighth Street Baptist Church
with the Rev. Major Maulk
officiating.
Burial will be in the Rest
Haven cemetery.
He died Tuesday following an
illness.
A native of Upson County, he
had lived in Griffin several
years.
He was a member of Oak
Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include four
daughters, Mrs. Emma Lizzie
Jones, Mrs. Fannie Lee Jones,
Mrs. Janie Mae Worthy and
Mrs. Fannie Maude Dugger, all
of Griffin; five sons, Willie
Cleveland Durham of Atlanta,
Bose Durham, Joseph Durham,
Heziakiah Durham, Jr., all of
St. Louis, Mo., and Lewis
Durham of Griffin; a sister,
Mrs. Mattie Mae Cloud of
Atlanta; two brothers, Jessie
Durham of Thomaston and
Eliziah Durham of Atlanta; 21
grandchildren and two great
grandchildren; several nieces
and nephews.
Miller’s Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.
Griffinite
in Christmas
program
The Gordon Singers of Gordon
Junior College will present their
final performance of
“Christmas with the Singers”
tonight at 8:15 at Memorial
Hall, which is on the Gordon
campus.
The “Five Madrigal Singers”
will be featured in a section
entitled, “Christmas in
Williamsburg.”
Ann Shockley of Griffin is a
member of the group. She will
also appear in other acts.
Her solos will include
“Rudolph the Rednosed
Reindeer,” “The Candy Man,”
and “Twelve Days of Christ
mas.”
Gas cans stolen
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -
Police are looking for thieves
who want to capitalize on the
gasoline crisis.
Officers said a railroad
boxcar was broken into early
Friday and 2,000 new gasoline
cans, capable of holding one to
10 gallons each, were ripped
off.
Citizens were warned not to
buy the cans from black
market dealers.
Mr. Hayes
Benjamin B. Hayes, 50,
former Griffin Policeman, died
unexpectedly yesterday at his
home in Chicago.
He was chief special agent for
REA Express in Chicago.
Funeral services will be held
Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the
Blake-Land Funeral Home, 4727
West 103rd Street, Oak Lawn,
111. Burial will be in Mt. Hope
cemetery in Chicago.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Marlene Hayes; a brother,
Paul Hayes, and a sister,
Mildred Vaughn.
He was a member of several
professional police
organizations in Chicago.
Before being transferred to
the Chicago REA office, he
served in Detroit as a special
agent.
Mr. Turner
Funeral services for Mr.
Hollis Turner, 38, of Miami,
Fla., formerly of Pike County,
will be held Sunday at 2 p.m.
from the Pine Chapel Baptist
Church in Pike County with the
Rev. H. G. Glanton officiating.
Burial will be in the church
cemetery.
Friends may visit the family
at the home of his mother at 505
Circus street.
His survivors include two
sens, Ralph Turner and Willie
Floyd Turner, both of Atlanta,;
his mother, Mrs. Marie Turner;
two sisters, Mrs. Trudie Mae
Slaton and Mrs. Ester Lovette;
a brother, Charlie Turner; and
a grand mother, Mrs. Ester
Akins, all of Griffin; and
several nieces and nephews.
The cortege will form at the
funeral home Sunday at 1 p.m.
McDowell United Funeral
Home is in charge of
arrangements.
Bogus calls
made here
Persons representing
themselves as being with
BankAmericard have been
making telephone solicitations
in the Griffin area for the past
few days.
Police warn that such calls
are not authorized by Ban
k Americard.
The callers seek financial
information when they
telephone.
BankAmericard does not
handle such business over the
telephone, a local spokesman
said.
People receiving such calls
were advised not to answer any
questions.
Candystripers
The monthly meeting of the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital
Auxiliary Candystqipers was
held with the president,
Davelyn Rumph, presiding.
Melinda Jolxiston, treasurer,
gave her report. Volunteers

Christmas decorations and the
resumption of the bookmobile
cart was discussed. It was
announced that the Mother-
Daughter Awards banquet will
be held Dec. 2 in the hospital
cafeteria.
The next meeting will be held
Jan. 8 at Griffin High School.
