The plight of the Falcons
6 No fight, no fire 9
ATLANTA (UPI) — You
could read the despair on the
faces of the Falcons.
A seven-game winning streak
had appeared to have won them
the wildcard berth for the NFC
playoffs, but two straight
upsets bounced them right out
again.
The Falcons were two
touchdown favorites over both
the Buffalo Bills and the St.
Louis Cardinals. The Bills did
them in, 17-6, a week ago, and
the Cardinals embarrassed
them Sunday, 32-10.
“The spark we had that got
us going, we apparently have
lost,” Falcons Coach Norm Van
Brocklin said quietly and sadly.
“We just haven’t had any spark

The Griffin High girls began a
new winning streak Saturday
night in Milner after having
their last one snapped after five
wins.
“We needed this victory,”
Coach Harvey Oglesby said.
“We have two big region
games coming up this week and
we needed to start another
winning to prepare for them,”
he said.
Griffin faces Forest Park
tomorrow night in Clayton
County and takes on Rockdale

“And, we had everything in
the world to win.”
For the Cardinals, far out of
contention at 4-8-1, it was just
another game. And, they were
surprised, really surprised, that
it was as easy as it was.
“We got all the bounces,”
said rookie quarterback Gary
Keithley who filled in for
injured Jim Hart. “We were
really surprised that we were
able to run so well against the
Falcons (243 yards). We had so
many opportunities, we couldn’t
help but score.”
The Cardinals had nine

NEW ORLEANS — Saint QB Archie Mannings’ face shows the pain that made him take
himself out of the action in the second quarter. Manning had the Saints leading 7-3, when he
was blitzed and landed on his right shoulder. Manning stayed in action for a few more plays,
but when he was again knocked on that shoulder, he walked to the bench, head down,
holding his arm close to his side, and stayed on the bench for the rest of the game, won by
New Orleans, 16-10. (UPI)

Falcons owner Rankin Smith
stood in stony silence as he
watched his team play itself out

After the game, he closeted
himself with Van Brocklin
briefly, then said, “the coach
didn’t play, the players played.
No, they didn’t play either.”
Atlanta’s 6-foot-5, 265-pound

teammates:
“It’s easy to cry when you

Poultry Bowl’s
future unsure
GAINESVILLE, Ga. (UPI) -
Sleet and rain kept many small
college football fans home Sat
urday night, as Stephen F. Aus

Poultry Bowl.
Because of the small turnout,
promoters of the bowl say they
are unsure about the future of
the event.
The Stephen F. Austin Lum

way, led by sophomore quarter
back Larry Mayer who ran for
one touchdown and helped set
up two others. He was named
the game’s most valuable of
fensive player.
The Lumberjacks scores
came on a 32 - yard field goal
by John Lewis in the first quart

run by Mayer in the second
quarter. The Lumber jacks broke
the game open in the second
half as Mayer’s 53 - yard run

Two more long runs by May

bursting up the middle for a
70 - yard touchdown run.
Gardner Webb’s scores came
from Mike Stephens, who kicked
