Energy
Americans are cutting down on fuel
WASHINGTON (UPI) -
Newly released figures indicate
Americans are complying with
administration appeals to cut
their use of energy.
Gasoline consumption
dropped 15 per cent in the three
weeks ending Nov. 30, and the
combined consumption of
gasoline, heating oil, diesel fuel
and jet fuel was down 29 per
cent, administration officials
reported Thursday.
That involved a 1.1 billion
barrel a day decline in the use
of crude oil, out of which
gasoline and other consumer
petroleum products are made.
“Americans are responding.
They must be thanked for their
efforts,” the administration’s
energy chief, William E. Simon,
said.
But the picture was not all
rosy. Eastern Airlines an
nounced Thursday that another
3,760 employes, more than 10
per cent of its work force, will
be laid off early in 1974 because
fuel shortages have cut the
number of flights. The layoffs
will include 440 pilots.
Others Announce Cuts
Three other Airlines—Pied
mont, Allegheny and United—
announced cuts of some flights
to save fuel.
The Airline Pilots Association
wired President Nixon that
pilots feel their industry has
been made to bear ‘‘an
unreasonable portion of the
burden of the energy crisis.”
The union scheduled a Dec. 19
executive council strategy
meeting but made no strike
threat.
In other developments:
—President Nixon summoned
his chief economic policy
advisers to a White House
meeting to discuss the impact
of the energy crisis on the U.S.
economy.
—Prime Minister Edward
Heath put Britain on a 2%-day
industrial work week Dec. 17
through Dec. 31 and a three-day
week in January to cope with
Speaker
fight
expected
ATLANTA (UPl)—House Ma
jority lieaderGeorgeßusbee has
asked not to be considered as
new House speaker, making the
election of Speaker Pro Tem
pore Tom Murphy almost a cer
tainty.
There may still be “a real gut
fight,” however, on the number
two leadership post, speaker pro
tempore.
Busbee, of Albany, said Thurs
day he will continue his cam
paign for the Democratic guber
natorial nomination, “one of the
greatest decisions I ever had to
make.”
“I feel that only through a
position of executive leadership
can I insure that state govern
ment helps instead of hinders
Georgia’s citizens,” he said.
Busbee declined to endorse
anyone for speaker and said he
will take no active part in the
selection process, but will sup
port whoever is chosen.
The House Democratic Caucus
will nominate a speaker Wed
nesday, which is tantamount to
election because the Democrats
have an overwhelmingly ma
jority in the House. The full
House will vote on the nominee
as its first order of business
when the General Assembly con
venes Jan. 14.
The new speaker will serve
only for the session, completing
the two-year term of veteran
legislator George L. Smith, who
died Sunday after suffering a
stroke a month ago. A new
election will be held late in 1974.
Whoever is named speaker
pro tempore would be in a criti
cal position to challenge Murphy
then and as many as six rep
resentatives are interested in
the number two job.

was unclear how much fuel that
would save. Aides indicated the
president’s 2000-gallon-per-ho

anyway in case he needs it. A
back-up plane that has accom

would not make the trip
however.
