Senior Bowl
North has the bulk
of All-Americans
ATLANTA (UPI) - The
squads for the 25th Senior Bowl
were announced this week and,
if All-Americans are as good as
their press clippings, the North
has to be the favorite.
Nine members of UPl’s All-
America first team have signed
to play in the Jan. 12 college
all-star game at Mobile, Ala.,
and seven of those, including
Heisman Trophy winner John
Cappelletti of Penn State, will
be playing for the North.
The Senior Bowl helped itself
tremendously by moving its
playing date back a week.
In the past few years, the
Senior Bowl has been in direct
conflict with the Hula Bowl out
in Hawaii —and its cast has
suffered because of it. The
NCAA has always refused to
sanction the Senior Bowl
because it pays off in cash and
this pressured some stars to
take the trip to Hawaii instead.
But, with the Hula Bowl
being played a week earlier,
Jan. 5, that represents no
problem this time around.

Thus the North has an
offensive backfield featuring
three All Americans —Cappel
letti, quarterback David Jaynes
of Kansas and flanker Lynn
Swann of Southern Cal.
The South has two second
team All-Americans in its
offensive backfield —quarter
back Danny White and running
back Woody Green, both of
Arizona State which led the
nation in total offense this past
season.
The Jaynes-White matchup
alone should be enough to
make the nationally televised
contest a thriller.
David Jaynes passed for 2,131
yards and 13 touchdowns in the
tough Big Eight Conference
while Danny White led the
nation in total yardage (2,862)
and pass-run touchdowns (28).
White passed for 2,609 yards
and a nation-leading 23 touch
downs.
Cappelletti, of course, is the
runner who should attract the
most attention. In a season
when most of the star runners
were underclassmen, Cappellet
ti stood out among the seniors
with 1,522 yards and 17
touchdowns.
But the South runners are not
to be sneezed at. Green
although missing some action
because of injury, gained 1,182
yards; Wayne Jones of Missis
sippi State gained 1,193; and
Wilbur Jackson of Alabama,
although carrying the ball an
average of less than nine times
per game, gained 752 for the
top-ranked Crimson Tide —
averaging about eight yards
per carry.
It must be remembered that
the Senior Bowl has close ties
with the pros —Mike McCor
mack of the Philadelphia
Eagles is coaching the North
and Don McCafferty of the
Detroit Lions the South —and
that as much attention is paid
to pro prospects as to All-
Americas.
For example, a lot of pro
scouts feel that Ed Jones, the 6-
foot-7, 265-pound defensive line
man from Tennessee State, the
small college champ, could be
the No. 1 pick in next month’s
pro draft.
And, the public may not have
heard much about Carl Bar
zilauskas of Indiana, but you
can bet the pros are interested
in that 6-foot-6, 285-pound
defensive lineman.
The Senior Bowl is the first
play-for-pay game for college
seniors; members of the
winning team getting $1,500 and
expenses and the losers taking
home $1,250.
Last year’s game was one of
the best as the South took a 14-
8-2 edge with a 33-30 victory
thanks to a 167-yard rushing
performance by Chuck Fore
man, then with the University
of Miami but now one of the top
rookies in the NFL as a
running back for the Minnesota
Vikings.
The Super Bowl follows the
Senior Bowl by one day and
you can be sure that many of
the pro scouts who don’t hang
around the all-star camps in
Mobile will be dropping over
from Houston to take a look.
The game represents a
chance to size up many of the
top draft prospects one last
time.
Yankees force
Finley’s hand
By MILTON RICHMAN
UPI Sports Editor
NEW YORK (UPI) — Charlie Finley is stuck now and
he knows it.
The New York Yankees have forced his hand.
They have gone out and oneupped him by signing his
manager, Dick Williams, without bothering to get
Finley’s formal permission.
More than that, this coming Tuesday the Yanks will go
twoup on Charlie Finley.
Joe Cronin, the departing American League president
whom everybody has been badgering to make a decision,
finally will do it.
Ostensibly, Cronin’s decision will have nothing to do
with Dick Williams and Charlie Finley but actually it will
have a whole lot to do with them.
On Tuesday, Joe Cronin will rule in favor of the Detroit
Tigers against the Yankees. In effect, he will be giving the
American League’s blessing to the Tigers on their signing
of ex-Yankee Manager Ralph Houk. The reason Cronin
hasn’t done this before is perfectly obvious. He felt if he
did, the Yanks would use it as a natural what’s good for
the goose is good for the gander lever to sign Williams,
and Finley, in turn, could use that as a lever perhaps even
to sue Cronin.
The day after Cronin makes his decision on the Tigers
and Yankees, which will be next Wednesday, the Yankees
and A’s are to meet with him in Boston. Gabe Paul will
represent the Yanks; Finley the A’s. Williams is
scheduled to be there also.
Charlie Isn’t Saying
Charlie Finley isn’t saying what he plans to do.
He isn’t saying much at all now that the Yanks have
signed Williams, and that’s something of an upset.
When Finley buttons up, that’s rare.
Anytime he does that, he’s hurting ... plotting ... or
trying to figure his way out of the woods.
Gabe Paul is ordinarily a pleasant, even genial in
dividual. Don’t let that fool you,though. He’s no pussy-cat.
He has told off Charlie Finley in some good old Agio-Saxon
words more than once down through the years.
He already has offered Finley both money and a player
for Williams, but nothing says he has to do it again.
I think he will though, and if I had to guess, I think
Finley eventually will accept a settlement of some kind.
Then Charlie probably will go out and sign somebody like
Dave Bristol as his manager.
If he threatens the Yankees to take them into court
Wednesday, I know what they’ll tell him—go right ahead.
If Finley has an injunction in mind, he could be hit with a
counter-punch by Williams charging him with depriving
him of his right of making a living in his chosen
profession. Finley’s lawyers undoubtedly already have
advised him of that.
A Fine Entrance
At any rate, Dick Williams made a fine entrance here
Thursday. ;
He came to the site of the news conference with Gabe :
Paul not with his chin stuck out, but rather with a quiet
dignity which reflected no inner guilt whatsoever.
George Steinbrenner, the Yankees’ new owner, isn’t J
especially crazy about long hair and moustaches someone ■
said to Williams, who adopted a moustache when the rest •
of his A’s did two years ago and still wears it. What did he ■
think of that? ;
“We’ll discuss it,” Williams answered mildly, ;
agreeably. ;
Back in Riviera Beach, Fla., some of the Christmas :
cards already have begun trickling in to Dick Williams’ :
home. :
One of them bears a Hertford, N.C., postmark and the •
signatures of Oakland pitcher Jim “Catfish” Hunter and •
his wife, Helen. Catfish included a brief message saying: :
“We’ll miss you very much. Good luck wherever you •
are. Enjoyed working for you.” :
Charlie Finley’s card hasn’t arrived yet. :
It probably will. :
That’s the kind of fellow Charlie Finley is. :

Cedeno likely to miss
Astros’ spring training
SANTO DOMINGO, D.R.
(UPI) — Cesar Cedeno will
almost certainly miss spring
training with the Houston
Astros and may not even free
himself from his legal entangle
ment here until well into the
1974 baseball season, criminal
lawyers were predicting here
today.
Cedeno, 22, is charged with
“voluntary manslaughter” in
the Tuesday dawn motel
slaying of a 19-year-old girl,
Altagracia de la Cruz.
Police called the shooting
“accidental” in their report and
Wednesday police said that the
parafin test made of the
outfielder’s hands hours after
the shooting were “negative,”
implying he did not fire a
weapon recently. The test on
the dead girl was “positive,”
police said.
Even if Cedeno is exonerated,
it will be months before the
trial process is completed if
Dominican justice runs its
normal course, the lawyers
said.
He cannot be released on bail
pending trial unless the charge
is reduced because “voluntary
manslaughter” is not a bailable
offense, die lawyers said.
Magistrate Socrates Diaz
Curiel, who is conducting the
preliminary hearing, must de
cide whether the charge is to
