Hampton has two goals
Rescue Falcons, reach 1,000
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) - Dave
Hampton has two goals Sunday.
The Falcons running back
will be trying to rescue
Atlanta’s playoff hopes in the
regular season finale here
against the New Orleans Saints.
And, he’ll also be shooting for
that 1,000-yard rushing mark
that was taken away in the
closing minutes last year.
First, let’s talk about the
Falcons’ playoff chances:
Atlanta (8-5) trails Dallas (9-
4) and Washington (9-4) by a
game in the battle for the NFC
wildcard berth. To get that
berth, Atlanta must not only
beat the Saints but either
Dallas must lose to St. Louis or
Washington lose to Philadel
phia.
The Falcons would have to
beat New Orleans by something
like their 62-7 victory in their
season opener to take the
wildcard berth away from
Dallas, even if the Cowboys are

A little success nearly proved
too much for the 19th-ranked
Vanderbilt Commodores Thurs
day night.
Fresh from an upset road
victory over ninth-ranked Mem
phis State, the Commodores
floundered against tiny Sam
ford University, trailing by 13
points in the first half before
pulling out a 69-65 win in
overtime in Nashville, Tenn.
In other action involving
Southeast teams, Memphis
State bounced back with a 90-82
win over Texas and Auburn
edged Georgia Tech 88-86.
In action tonight, the Volun
teer Classic opens at Knoxville,
Tenn., with Temple playing
Utah State and Tennessee
meeting DePaul. Kentucky is at
lowa in the only other contest.
Vanderbilt, 6-0, used a
fullcourt press in the second
half to come from behind and
finally take the lead 54-53 on
two free throws by Bill Ligon
with 3:44 left in the game.
Samford, 3-3, hung on, however,
and regulation play ended 61-61.
Center Jan Van Breda Kolff
hit on two tip-ins for his only
buckets of the game in the
overtime to give the Com
modores the victory.
Terry Compton led Vanderbilt
with 18 points and became only
the 11th player in Vanderbilt
history to score 1,000 points in
his career. Compton, a senior,
has 1,017. Guard Al Walter had
21 for Samford.

upset. They have a better
chance of squeezing past
Washington —if the Eagles
help.
Now, to Hampton’s personal
goal:
Last year, in the final game
of the season, Hampton reached
the 1,000 yard mark for the
first time in his professional
football career. The game was
stopped, Hampton given the
ball, and he promptly lost six
yards the next time he carried
and wound up with 995 for the
season.
Now, Hampton, who has
gained 913 yards in 13 games
(an average of 70 yards per
game), needs 87 yards against
the Saints Sunday to hit that
1,000 mark. He appeared to
have a lock on that figure two
weeks ago —but was held to 49
yards by both the Buffalo Bills
and the St. Louis Cardinals. He
rushed for 104 yards in the first
game with New Orleans.
The Bills and Cardinals hurt
Billy Buford keyed a late surge
as Memphis State broke a 78-78
tie with 2:58 left to defeat the
Longhorns at Austin, Tex.
Reed and Buford had 23
points each for the Tigers, who
posted their fifth victory in six
games. Texas, winless in six
outings, was led by Larry
Robinson with 19 points and 22
rebounds.
Georgia Tech trailed Auburn
81-71 with four minutes left but
battled back before narrowly
losing in Atlanta. Tech cut the
margin to four points with a
minute left but Auburn fresh
man Jim Wood hit a key basket
with 31 seconds left to put the
Tigers on top 88-82 and wrap up
the victory.
Auburn, 3-2, was led by Bob
Osberry with 22 points. Trot
Hunt and Wood scored 16 each
for Tech, 0-2.

more than Hampton. Upsets by
those two-touchdown under
dogs turned the Falcons’
playoff hopes upside down.
Before those losses, Atlanta had
won seven straight and was
favored to win the wildcard
berth.
Atlanta Coach Norm Van
Brocklin blamed the two losses
on over confidence and has
been warning his players all
week that the Saints they will

Just last Sunday, New Or
leans knocked off San Francis
co, 16-10, and earlier beat
Washington along with two
teams which beat the Falcons
—Detroit and Buffalo.
However, Saints quarterback
Archie Manning missed the
second half of last week’s win
against San Francisco because
of a bruised right arm and
there’s a question of how much
he’ll be able to play against the
Falcons.
