POLLY’S POINTERS
Cement spatters
mar tile floor
By Polly Cramer
I —Polly’s —
DEAR POLLY - When moving into our home we
found the bathroom tile floor was dotted with spots
from the tile cement. I have used everything I can
think of but the cement still sticks fast. I hope some
reader has an; nswer for me. Thanks for the wonderful
Pointers. —MRS.C.B.S.
DEAR POLLY - A recent magazine article mentioned the
fact that men should have a buttoned-down inside breast
pocket for carrying their wallets safely. I wonder why suit
manufacturers do not put buttons on an inside jacket pocket.
—A.B.
DEAR POLLY and Joyce - I use a brush from an infant s
hair brush set to dust the leaves of my African violet plants.
Slip the finger of the left hand under the leaves and very
gently brush the dust off. —IDA.
DEAR POLLY - Please tell Joyce she should use a shav
ing brush to dust the leaves on her African violet plants.
-MYRTLE.
DEAR POLLY - Every year at Christmas when the tree is
put up we give each of our children a new Christmas decora
tion. The planis that when they leave home each will have at
least one box of his or her own decorations for a tree. We
hope this will remind them of past happy Christmases at
home. Now they really look forward to seeing what the new
decorations will be each year. —NANCY.
DEAR NANCY AND GIRLS - Each Christmas I have al
ways given each of my grandchildren a Christmas tree or
nament to be his very own and for the same reason as Nan
cy. Usually 1 try to make something a bit unusual. Last year
they were needlepoint ones and the year before that each
received half of a clear plastic ball with a picture of the
child, taken the Christmas before, fit into the open side.
The round cardboard back was covered on the outside with
red velvet glued on and then gold cord glued over the edge
of the half ball with more gold cord and narrow red velvet
ribbon made into a bow with drooping ends at the top
where it fastens to the tree. It is years too late now but I
wish I had started with just this one idea and they would all
have pictures of themselves and how they looked each
Christmas through the years of grow ing up. -POLLY.
DEAR POLLY - My Pointer is for those who sew. When
putting wide elastic through the top of a pair of slacks with a
safety pin attached mark the bottom of each end of the
elastic. Then it is easy to be sure the elastic has not turned
somewhere around the waist before sewing the ends
together. —KATHLEEN.
DEAR POLLY and my budget-minded readers — A pretty
wash-and-wear sheet <72 x 104) will make a long house coat
AND a pair of pillowcases. I did this with one bought on sale
for two dollars. How is that for a dollar stretcher?
-EUNICE.

Fashion and
beauty tips
White Beauty
Try a simple, soft white
shirt paired with a flowing,
luxurious full-length pleated
skirt circled with a two-inch
wide elastic gold belt for an
exciting evening look.
Shiny Knits
Metallic threads of gold,
silver and a rainbow of col
ors running through this
season’s knits make the
newest and most exciting
evening sweater tops worn
over simple slacksand flow
ing skirts.
Flowing Velvet
Clingy, slinky soft velvet
makes an exciting full-length
evening shirt. Accent with
colored rhinestone bangle
bracelets —two or three for
added fun and a skinny
beaded necklace outlining a
delicate neck.
Evening Makeup
Try a pink foundation
makeup with a luminous
glow for highlighting and
combine frosted eye shadow
in two different but compati
ble colors (pink and pale
yellow). Top with a pale rose
lip gloss for a total shimmer
effect.
Girl’s Best Friend
Rhinestones are this year’s
best bet. They come in
classic gem settings and will
make even the most dis
criminating judge look
twice. Even the ladies with
the real thing are leaving
them in their vaults and are
flashing these exciting fakes.
