Sailors
caught
in flame
SUBIC BAY NAVAL BASE,
Philippines (UPI) — The
commander of the U.S. aircraft
carrier Kitty Hawk said today
the six sailors killed in
Tuesday’s shipboard fire were
caught in a “solid wall of
flame” in the vessel’s main
machinery room.
Capt. Robert E. Kirksey told
reporters the blaze broke out
when fuel being transferred to
oil tanks ignited and sent
flames racing through the
machinery room as the big ship
was about 700 miles east of the
Philippines.
He said when the fuel ignited,
it touched off a fire that
“resembled a solid wall of
flame and spread quickly
throughout the upper levels of
the space. Within 10 minutes
smoke and fumes had com
pletely filled the main fore and
aft passageway.”
The six men who died were
standing watch in the room
when the fire broke out. A total
of 39 others were injured, most
of them aiding in rescue
operations.
Kirksey said the fuel was
being transferred from storage
tanks to service tanks in the
No. 1 machinery roan when the
fire broke out. He said an
investigation was still under
way to determine exact cause
of the blaze.
The dead men were identified
as Fireman Apprentice Samuel
J. Cardenas, 20, Pueblo, Colo.;
Fireman Apprentice Alan J.
Champine, 18, Mt. Clemens,
Mich.; Fireman Recruit Micha
el R. Deverichi, 19, Romulus,
Mich.; Fireman Recruit Kevin
W. Johnson, 17, Yakima,
Wash.; Fireman Recruit Linn
C. Schambers, 19, Van Nuys,
Calif.; and Fireman Apprentice
Joseph P. Tulipana, 19, Dover,
Mo.
Reporters were not allowed to
see the damaged machinery
room, located on the ship’s fifth
and sixth decks. Kirksey said
no vital equipment was da
maged and the 80,000-ton vessel
with its 5,500 men was “fully
operational.”
The Kitty Hawk arrived
Friday night at Subic, the main
service base in the Pacific for
the U.S. 7th Fleet, 50 miles
northwest of Manila.
Kirksey said there were 19
watchstanders in the room
when the fire broke out. The six
deaths were caused by intense
heat and suffocation, he said.
The other men were evacuated
through escape hatches and the
remaining injuries were to
crewmen helping in rescue
operations.
“There were many cases of
men doing their jobs in the face
of extreme personal danger and
some cases of men doing more
than could be expected of them
under such circumstances,” he
said.
Time
measure
approved
By ROBERT F. BUCKHORN
WASHINGTON (UPI) - A
bill to put most of the nation on
Daylight Saving Time until
October, 1975, was passed by
Congress Friday and sent to
President Nixon.
If Nixon signs it before
Sunday, clocks would be turned
ahead on Jan. 6. If he delays,
the time change would take
effect Jan. 13. The White House
had indicated the President
would sign the measure
promptly—possibly today.
There is little in the way of
factual information on the
question of exactly how much
energy so-called fast tune will
save. The last time this country
moved its clocks ahead during
the winter months was during
World War 11, but those
statistics are no longer valid.
The mammoth boom in the use
of electricity in the 28 years
since the end of the war has
rendered them meaningless.
A survey by the Transporta
tion Department earlier this
year showed nationwide de
mand for electricity would be
reduced by only 1 to 2 per cent.
Critics of the bill agree that
school children will have more
daylight hours in which to play,
but say they’ll have to wait in
the morning darkness for the
school bus.
