Nixon
calls
meeting
WASHINGTON (UPI) -
President Nixon called off his
annual medical checkup today
and summoned energy experts
to discuss further measures to
cope with the nation’s fuel
shortage.
Nixon was to undergo an
early morning head-to-toe
physical examination at Bethes
da Naval Medical center but
postponed it until sometime
next week.
Deputy Press Secretary Ge
rald L. Warren announced that
Nixon had summoned federal
energy chief William Simon and
his deputy John Sawhill to the
White House for more talks on
energy conservation options.
While gasoline rationing looms
as a possibility, administration
sources say no decision has
been made.
Nixon was in a buoyant mood
Friday night at the Pageant of
Peace, where he pressed a
button to light a 3-foot star atop
the austere National Communi
ty Christmas tree. Except for
eight floodlamps, all other
lights on the tree were doused
because of the energy shortage.
The traditional nonpartisan
Christmas tree lighting ceremo
ny was abandoned this year as
a crowd of 10,000 Nixon
supporters waved red, white
and blue pennants saying
“Support our President, God
loves Nixon.”
The crowd interrupted the
President’s brief televised re
marks with cheers and shouts
of “We want the President.”
The President acknowledged
their accolades with a happy
smile.

House works late
on energy bill
WASHINGTON (UPI) - The
House, keeping its lights on
well past midnight, passed a
bill today giving President
Nixon emergency powers to
deal with the energy crisis.
But the heavily amended
measure, which includes con
gressional veto power over
gasoline rationing, differs so
widely from the Senate version
passed Nov. 20 that long
conference committee work will
be needed before final enact
ment.
Described by House Demo
cratic Leader Rep. Thomas P.
O’Neill Jr. as a “must” bill, the
legislation passed, 265-112, after
a 15-hour session.
While the House debated
Friday, truck drivers on strike
in protest of speed and fuel
limits met with federal of
ficials.
Truck drivers’ spokesman J.
W. “River Rat” Edwards
scheduled a news conference
today to dispute Transportation
Secretary Claude S. Brinegar’s
statement that he expected the
strike to end this weekend.
Nothing Settled
“Secretary Brinegar does not
speak for the truckers. At this
time there has been nothing
settled,” said Edwards.
The House bill would force
Nixon to seek prior approval
from Congress before imposing
any conservation or allocation
measures and would give either
house veto power over gasoline
or home heating oil rationing.
It also banned gasoline for
school buses used to transport
pupils past their local schools
for desegregation purposes and
oil shipments to Southeast Asia
for military purposes. But an
amendment barring oil ship
ments to Israel for miltary use
was soundly defeated.
The House narrowly defeated
an amendment that would have
delayed auto exhaust control
measures until the energy
shortage eased.
Both Houses Friday approved
a bill imposing Daylight Saving
Time through October, 1975. If
President Nixon signs it by
Sunday, clocks would be set one
hour ahead Jan. 6. If he delays,
the time change would take
effect Jan. 13.
The Senate Friday passed a
bill forcing states either to set
their speed limits at a
maximum of 55 miles per hour
or face loss of federal highway
funds.
Checkup Postponed
Nixon today postponed his
annual physical checkup for
still more meetings with
energy administrator William
E. Simon and his deputy, John
Sawhill.
In a speech Friday, as he lit
the star atop a dim national
Christmas tree, Nixon said this
will not be a “dreary” holiday
season “because the spirit of
Christmas is not measured by
the number of lights on a tree.
The spirit of Christmas is
measured by the love each of
us has in the heart..”
In other developments:
—Herbert Stein, head of the
Council of Economic Advisers,
said Friday that the energy and
labor problems forcing Great
Britain to go to a three-day
work week “can’t happen
here.”
