Six people hurt
in area wrecks
A Griffin-Spalding Hospital
ambulance made a short call
this morning when they drove
across Eighth street at the rear
of the hospital to get an injured
wreck victim.
Police said Beecher “Pete”
Williamson, 49, of Route Three,
suffered leg and possible back
injuries when his pickup truck
slammed into a utility pole at
the rear of the hospital.
Williamson told officers he hit
the pole when he swerved to
miss a car which pulled out in
front of him from the hospital
parking lot The car did not
stop.
The ambulance drivers went
to get the man when a doctor
told them he was slumped over
the steering wheel.
The pole was not damaged
although Williamson’s pickup
truck was damaged heavily in
the front.

Banister of Sunny Side, escaped
injury.
Four persons were injured
Friday night in a near headon
collision on Experiment street
near Ga. 3.
They were identified as
Bobby Clay Blankenship, 23,601
West Quilley street; Terry
Callahan of 513 South 15th
street; Billy Vaughn, Route
Five; Alva Hatchett of William
son.
Police said Blankenship and
his passengers, Vaughn and
Callahan, were injured when a
car driven by Jeffery Mc-
Mahone, 19, turned into their
path. Hatchett was a passenger
in the McMahone vehicle.
Four drug
arrests
made here
Four Griffin teenagers were
arrested on drug charges
Saturday night when a member
of the State Patrol’s T-Squad
found a small quantity of
suspected marijuana in their
car.
They were identified as Gregg
Allen Orr, 18, 825 East College
street; Steve Johnston, 18, 604
South Hill street; Frances
Reynolds, 17, 1323 Grantland
road; and a 15-year-old girl who
will not be named because of
her age.
Trooper Kenneth Price of the
T-Squad stopped the car on
Fourth street around 11:15 p.m.
Saturday. He found a plastic
sandwich bag half filled with
suspected marijuana in the door
pocket of the auto and a
marijuana cigaret on the back
seat.
Bonds for Orr and Johnston
were set at $2,000 each. Bonds
for the girls were SI,OOO each.

Mr. Watson
Mr. Martin Luther Watson of
422 South 18th street died early
Sunday afternoon at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital where he was
admitted Saturday night.
Mr. Watson was a native of
Upson County, son of the late
Fletcher Watson and the late
Mary Etta Hall Watson. He had
made his home in Griffin for 70
years. Mr. Watson was em
ployed with Rushton Mill for 57
years, retiring 11 years ago. He
was a member of Hanleiter
United Methodist Church and a
honorary steward.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Mercer Jimmerson
Watson; a sister, Mrs. Bernice
Evans; a brother, Lester
Watson, all of Griffin, and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock from Hanleiter
United Methodist Church. The
Rev. Elvyn McDonald and the
Rev. Warren Bedingfield will
officiate and burial will be in
Oak Hill cemetery. The body
will remain at Pittman Rawls
Funeral Home until carried to
the church 30 minutes prior to
the funeral hour.
Mrs. Hand
Mrs. Ethel Sibley Hand, 93, of
524 West Solomon street died at
Griffin-Spalding Hospital
Sunday afternoon after a
lengthy illness.
Mrs. Hand, widow of Mr.
Vindex Hand, was born in
Senoia, daughter of the late
William Franklin Sibley and the
late Sallie Brantley Sibley. She
had resided in Griffin for 58
years and was a member of the
First Baptist Church.
She is survived by several
nieces and nephews, among
them, Mrs. Ella Catherine
Raines of Griffin, C. Frank
Hollberg, Jr., of Senoia and M.
Douglas Hollberg of Griffin.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 3
o’clock in Haisten’s chapel. The
Rev. Bruce Morgan and the
Rev. Bruce Martin officiated
and burial was in Oak Hill
cemetery. Haisten Funeral
Home was in charge of plans.
Mr. Redding
Mr. Michael Ray Redding,
Sr., of 1470 West Mclntosh road
was dead on arrival at Upson
County Hospital Sunday
morning.
Mr. Redding was a lifelong
resident of Spalding County and
a member of Calvary Baptist
Church. He was a former
employe of Walker Arms
Company and he served in the
U. S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. George Tinsley of
Griffin; father, Miller Redding
of Greenville, S. C.; a son,
Michael Ray Redding, Jr., of
Griffin; a sister, Mrs. Connie
Butler of Frankfurt, Germany;
threebrothers, Burnell Redding,
Leon Redding and Randy
Redding, all of Griffin; grand
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Redding of Griffin and Mrs.
Susie Peeples of Vaughn; and
several aunts and uncles.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDonald Chapel.
Friends may visit the family
tonight at the funeral home
from 7 to 9 p.m.
Heck Chapel
UMW meet
The United Methodist Women
of Heck Chapel held their
monthly meeting at the home of
Mrs. Viola Blanton on the
Fayetteville road.
Mrs. Eldora B. Holmes
presided. The meeting was
opened with a hymn after which
the Lord’s Prayer was prayed
in unison.
‘‘What do you bring to
Christmas” was led by Miss
Alberta Blanton. Those par
ticipating on the program were
Mrs. Mary E. Jinks, Mrs.
Eldora B. Holmes, Mrs. Cheryl
S. Davenport, Mrs. Virginia
Ison, Mrs. Corene Prothro, Mrs.
Jacqueline Horton, Mrs. Mattie
McClendon and Mrs. Ceola
Head.
The meeting was adjourned
with prayer by Miss Alberta
Blanton. A social hour followed
and refreshments were served
by the hostesses to the 18
members present. Mrs. Cheryl
Davenport and Mrs. Virginia
Binford were new members.
Hostesses were Mrs. Blanton,
Miss Helen Blanton and Miss
Doris Blanton.
Miss Reid
Miss Kate Louise Reid, 68, of
Zebulon died Sunday evening at
the Upson County Hospital after
an illness of several months.
Miss Reid was a lifelong
resident of Pike County,
daughter of the late Newton
Richard Reid and the late
Nannie Catherine Ringer Reid.
She attended the Primitive
Baptist Church.
She is survived by a brother,
Marvin Reid of Zebulon.
Graveside services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock in the Allen Reid
family cemetery in Pike
County. Elder Charlie F. York
will officiate. The body will
remain at Haisten Funeral
Home in Griffin.
Mr. Pace
Mr. Claude Pace of East
Point, a former resident of
Griffin, died Saturday morning
at the Veterans Hospital in
Atlanta.
Mr. Pace is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Gladys Bullard Pace
of East Point; a daughter, Mrs.,
Sammy Fowler of Griffin; a
son, Lamar Pace of Marietta;
14 grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 2
o’clock in the Howard L. Car
michael Funeral Home chapel
in East Point. Burial will be in
Oal Hill cemetery in Griffin.
Miss Clark
Miss Annie Sue Clark of 223
Lexington avenue died this
morning at Grady Memorial
Hospital in Atlanta after an
illness of several weeks.
Survivors include two
brothers, John Clark and Paul
Clark both of Griffin.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Burglaries
still plague
Spalding
Burglars continue to plague
both city and county residents
with four reported break-ins
over the weekend.
Tommy Akins of Route One,
Valley Hill road, complained
that burglars took a black
leather couch, broiler oven, four
bar stools and two sets of china
from his home.
Mrs. Thelma Scandrick of 410
New Lane street, came home
around 1 a.m. yesterday and
discovered that someone had
stolen two black and white
portable television sets from
her home.
A portable television set also
was stolen from the home of
Joan Boyd on Kathryn road.
Charles Mobley, principal of
Beaverbrook Elementary
School, reported that someone
broke into the school cafeteria
and office and took four
turkeys.
Entry was made by breaking
out a door window.

Protesters charged
ELIZABETH N.J. (UPI) -
Thirty one members of the
“New Jersey Committee to
Throw the Bum Out,” who
clashed with police Saturday
during an anti-Nixon demon
stration, were charged with
being disorderly.
They faced arraignment
today.
An eyewitness said the inci
dent began when a marcher and
a policeman began shoving
each other. Seven persons,
including three policemen, were
injured, none seriously.

Hood
appointed
to panel
Frank A. Hood, assistant vice
president and manager of the
Georgia Power Company’s
community development
department, has been appointed
to the agribusiness and rural
affairs committee of the
Chamber of Commerce of the
United States.
Chamber President E. B.
Rust announced Hood’s ap
pointment. He said the com
mittee advises the chamber in
its policies, program and
legislative work relating to
agriculture and rural
development.
The Georgia Power official,
who in earlier days played a
major role in the development
of the nationally acclaimed
Better Home Towns Program,
aided in the creation of
Georgia’s area planning and
development commissions and
the State Planning and Com
munity Affairs Bureau.
Hood has been cited by the
Georgia Planning Commission
for having worked closely with
Governor Jimmy Carter and
the Georgia Planning
Association in developing the
governor’s program to establish
“Goals for Georgia.” The
planning association also has
lauded him for his leadership in
such areas as Appalachia,
Coastal Plains, the Edison
Electric Institute’s community
development committee, the
certified cities program and
national and state recreation
programs.

have special
presentation
The Church of Christ will
present a presentation of
“Jesus Christ” in work and
song by The Horizons on
Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
The Horizons are a group of 10
young people. They were
organized in June, 1971 and
have traveled throughout the
United States and Canada.
Minister Evans McMullen is
pastor of Church of Christ,
located at 669 South Hill street.

Musical program presented
The arts department and the
home life department of the
Griffin Junior Woman’s Club
presented a musical program at
the December meeting of the
club.
A trio, composed of Mrs.
Douglas Hollberg, Mrs. Doug
Scholl and Mrs. Michael
Buchanan, accompanied by
Mrs. Harry Todd, sang “He
Touched Me”. Mrs. Carey
Jones, accompanying herself on
the autoharp, sang “I Wonder
as I Wander”. Harold Cartee,
playing the guitar, sang a
medley of Christmas carols.
Mrs. Marshall Smallwood,
president, presided at the
meeting which was held at the
home of Mrs. Ernest Snyder.
First vice president, Mrs.
Ray Casey, installed several
Milner man
killed
in accident
A Milner man was killed
Saturday night when he was
thrown from his car and it
overturned and landed on top of
him.
The Forsyth State Patrol Post
identified him as Bradley
Evans, 21, of Route Two,
Milner.
The accident happened
around 11:15 p.m. Saturday,
some nine miles north of
Barnesville on the High Falls
road in Lamar County.
Troopers said he lost control
of his auto on a curve.
