LAMB Reader can’t keep diet DEAR DR. LAMB - I have a big problem and that is my weight. I went to five doctors ahd all they say is to cut down. My problem is this. I can’t take diet pills at all, and I’m scared to anyway. I have tried Dr. Atkins’ diet faithfully and it resulted in weakness. I tried Dr. Still man’s and it resulted in my being hungry for certain foods. I know 1 do not need a large amount of food or even want it. My body seems to crave any goods, nothing in particular, just food. I gain weight real fast. I would ap preciate any advice. DEAR READER - You need to learn something about nutrition. Those fad diets are not going to help you and may make you sick. Fatigue is a frequent com plaint when people cut down on their calories too much. As a general guideline, I Ford backing full disclosure WASHINGTON (UPI) - Vice President Gerald R. Ford has publicly urged President Nixon to reveal information on two Watergate-related matters — the ITT and milk fund con troversies. “I think the White House ought to get these documents out and make them available to the public,” Ford said. “I think it will increase public support for his position above that at the present time.” White House sources have been quoted recently as indicat ing the administration has had a change of heart about its “Operation Candor” and that some information which had been expected to be released will be withheld. Interviewed Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Ford said he had favored Nixon’s disclosing his income tax returns and other financial information “And I hope and trust, despite what I understand is some reluctance at the present time, that the President will continue with Operation Candor, with a full disclosure or a white paper involving the HELP WANTED: Have immediate openings for registered nurse. You can continue to eat leafy vegetables, carrots, radishes, tomatoes and fresh fruit in reasonable amounts. Limit your bread to four slices a day. Eliminate all ex cess fat, including butter and margarine. Use lean meat, lean poultry, such as the white meat or the breast without the skin, lean fish such as flounder, codfish and sole. Use fortified skim milk (about a quart a day) or uncreamed cottage cheese. Do not use fat in cooking. You should be careful not to cut down your calories to the point that you are fatigued. That can be harmful. A lot of fad diets can work because the person eats fewer calories. This applies to the low carbohydrate diets including the Atkins’ diet. ITT matter and the so-called milk fund contribution.” The ITT controversy involves whether a $400,000 contribution by a subsidiary of the International Telephone and Telegraph Corp, to Nixon’s re election campaign was related to a favorable antitrust decision involving ITT and the Hartford Fire Insurance Co. The milk fund controversy involves con tributions by dairy interests and whether these were linked to administration action on milk price supports. Ford said he is convinced the President acted properly in both cases. He said he believes most Republican members of Con gress feel, as he does, that the President, having started Oper ation Candor in December, should go forward with it. On a related matter, Ford said that if the Senate Watergate com mittee would scale down its subpoena for some 500 White House tapes and documents on a wide range of subjects there might be room for compromise, on record, that he has fully administered Veronica Bailey Wimbush's estate. This is therefore to cite all persons concerned, kindred and creditors, to show cause, if any they can, why said Administrator should not be discharged from his administration, and receive lettersof dismission, on the first Monday in February, 1974. Witness my hand and official signature, this day of 1973. George C. Imes, Ordinary — Griffin Daily News Monday, January 7,1974 People don’t realize that a pound of separable lean of round steak only contains 600 calories. That is why it is good for a diet, but the end result is eating a lot of food without getting too many calories. Some of these diets upset the body chemistry so much that the person com pletely loses his appetite. Despite public claims to the contrary'by some of the diet gurus, your weight gain or loss depends solely on how many calories your body uses and how many calories you eat, unless you are sick. An untreated diabetic, for exam ple, may lose a lot of sugar calories in the urine. To a sensible diet program I would suggest you add a daily exercise program. You can start with walking. Build into your life style at least a mile and a half walk each day. Two or even three miles would be better. And, add to Hearings open on state budget ATLANTA (UPI) — Hearings get underway at the state Capi tol today on Gov. Jimmy Car ter’s proposed $1.62 billion bud get for the next fiscal year and a $10.4 million supplemental spending bill for the current budget. The House and Senate appro priations committees are hold ing joint hearings before the legislature convenes next Mon day, in an effort to speed up the work and avoid the usual mid - session recess. The two spending packages appear to be the major issues thus far in the 1974 General As sembly session. His swearing-in at the Civic Center will be a “people’s” ceremony of pageantry and song, foregoing for the first time the traditional ceremony at City Hall. Thousands are expected to at tend the event, at which the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and a 250-voice chorus from Georgia State, Spelman, Geor gia Tech, Morris Brown and Morris Brown and Morehouse colleges will perform. Opera singer Mattiwilda Dobbs, Jack son’s aunt, will sing a few selec tions. Officials say the inaugural is expected to cost almost $2,000, but the citizens group which planned the affair says private donations already have covered the cost. City Council President Wyche Fowler and 18 city councilmen will also be sworn in, as a new city charter goes into effect re placing the old Board of Aider men with a City Council and the vice mayor with a council president. The 35-year-old Jackson, a native of Dallas, Tex., defeated Mayor Sam Massell in a runoff last October with 59.2 per cent of the vote. Jackson, a graduate of More house College in Atlanta and North Carolina College Law School, served as vice mayor in the Massell administration. Want Ads Pay! Federal revenue shar ing funds should be down al most $49 million, Carter said, because payments in 1973 - 74 cover two- and -a - half years of the program. James T. Mclntyre, director of budget planning for the Car ter administration, will present a “general overview” of state spending in the joing hearings Monday. Dr. Henry Thomassen, an administration fiscal expert, will present revenue estimates for the coming year. The rest of the week will be devoted to testimony from the various state departments. Of ficials from the transportation and education departments will appear at the joint hearings Tuesday, the natural resources and human resources depart ments on Wednesday, human re sources again and the Board of Regents on Thursday, and the departments of agriculture and offender relations on Friday. Human Resources Director Richard Hardin, whose depart ment would get $6.2 million of Carter’s $10.4 million supple mental spending bill, will be questioned closely at the hear ings. House Appropriations Committee Chairman James “Sloppy” Floyd says the committee hearings will con tinue through the first week of the session and possible into the second. Once the legislature is in ses sion, Floyd said, floor sessions will be held only in the morn ings, leaving the afternoons for working out the budget. Doctors hopeful WASHINGTON (UPI) - Physicians are optimistic that X-ray treatments have cured Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey, Il- Minn., of any danger stemming from a minute tumor on his bladder even if it turns out to be malignant. The 62-year-old former vice president rested comfortably Sunday at Bethesda Naval Hospital where he underwent follow-up tests to the X-ray treatments he began in Novem ber. He is expected to be released during the week. Dr. Edgar Berman, Hum phrey’s personal physician, reported him in excellent spirits and said he undoubtedly would be ready for the reconvening of the Senate on Jan. 21. A fuller check on the tumor will be conducted in early March to determine if it has persisted or has been eradicated by the X-ray procedure.
