Man
killed
in wreck
A Forest Park man was killed
and a family of five were in
jured early yesterday in a
collision of three tractor-trailer
trucks on 1-75 in Henry County
south of Locust Grove near the
Spalding line.
Troopers at the Griffin State
Patrol Post said that Orville
Martian Williamson, 60, of
Route One, Forest Park, died of
chest and abdominal injuries
after being brought to the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital. He
was driving one of the trucks.
The injured were Mr. and
Mrs. Ralph Johnson of Rincon
and their three children,
Johnny, 13, Gloria, 11, and
Ralph Jr., two. They were
traveling in another tractor
trailer truck.
The third truck was driven by
Edwin A. Ward of Bena, Va.
who escaped injury.
Troopers said the accident
happened when Johnson ap
parently fell asleep at the wheel
and his truck struck the rear of
Ward’s truck which was
traveling in front of him.
The cab, containing the John
son family, broke loose and
rolled down an embankment.
Its trailer, with no lights,
crashed into the guard rail,
partially blocking the right
traffic lane.
Some three minutes later, the
tractor-trailer driven by
Williamson struck the rear of
Johnson’s trailer.
Williamson was brought to
the Griffin-Spalding Hospital
where he died in the emergency
room.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were
admitted to the hospital. Their
three children were treated in
the emergency room.
Troopers estimated the total
damage to the three trucks and
guard rail would run around
$46,200.
Panel says
disbar
Agnew
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (UPI) - A
special three judge panel
recommended today that for
mer Vice President Spiro T.
Agnew be disbarred.
The panel, appointed by the
Maryland State Court of Ap
peals, recommended the action
at the request of the Maryland
Bar Association which charged
that Agnew’s plea of no contest
to a federal income tax evasion
charge was an admission of
professional misconduct.
The recommendation goes to
the state appellate court,
highest in the state, for final
action.
Agnew served as Baltimore
County executive and Maryland
governor prior to being elected
vice president, and his no
contest plea to an income tax
evasion charge related to a
period when he was governor.
Following a federal investiga
tion into a Maryland political
kickback scheme, Agnew re
signed as vice president and
pleaded “no contest” to the tax
charge. Other allegations
against him were dropped.
At a hearing by the three
judge panel last month, Agnew
asked the judges not to disbar
him, but instead suspend him
temporarily, pleading that dis
barment would destroy his
means of livelihood.
