Bears play
Forest Park
Talk about tough basketball
schedules, just look at Griffin
High’s.
Last Friday the Bears were
barely beaten by the number
five rated triple-A team in
Georgia.
Tomorrow night they play the
number six rated team.
This is happening to the Bears
while Coach Frank Hinson is
trying to get his players ready
to participate in the 6-AAA
tournament which is scheduled
to start Feb. 18 at the Morrow
Gym.
LaGrange, the number five
ranked team in Georgia,
escaped with a 64-56 victory
over Griffin last Friday in
LaGrange.
Griffin was even with the
Grangers (30-30) at halftime
and matched them point-for
point for three periods. The two
battling squads went into the
fourth deadlocked, 42-42.
“I think we gave them about
all they could handle,” Coach
Hinson said. “I was proud of my
players.”
Forest Park, the number six
ranked team will be in Griffin
tomorrow night and the Bears
are looking forward to the
match up.
Forest Park slipped by
Griffin by six points in an
earlier meeting. That game was
Maple Leafs
rip Flames
ATLANTA (UPI) —The Atlan
ta Flames were rebound shy,
according to Coach Bernie Geof
frion, and lost another National
Hockey League game Sunday
night.
The Toronto Maple Leafs
slapped the latest loss on the
Flames, a 5-2 defeat at the
Omni.
“Even if we had 36 shots, we
had about 10 from the center
line, nobody goes after the re
bounds,” groanded Geoffrion.
“Eddie Johnston gave about 10
rebounds tonight, and nobody
went after them.”
Hawks given
defense lesson
ATLANTA (UPI) -The New
York Knicks gave the Atlanta
Hawks a lesson on defense Sun
day and it cost the Hawks their
29th loss of the National Basket
ball Association seasoa
The 111 - 89 defeat dropped
Atlanta’s record to 23 - 29, five
and one-half games back of the
Capital Bullets in the Central
Division.
Walt Frazier had 27 points
and Earl Monroe 25 in pacing
the NBA defending champions
to victory in the televised game
of the week.
The agressive Knicks’ defense
limited Pete Maravich to 23
points and Lou Hudson to 20
before 7,088 fans in the Omni.
New York jumped to a 30 - 24
played on the Panthers’ home
court.
This time Griffin will have the
home court advantage and
Griffin thinks the story will be a
little different.
Coach Hinson will start Keith
Daniels at center, Chuck Dunn
and Ken Crawford at guard and
Bean Coggins and Gary Mc-
Dowell or John Slaughter at for
ward. Richard Sanders will see
action.
Besides the big match bet
ween the Bears and Panthers, it
will be Tom Thumb Night.
All Tom Thumb players, who
wear their jerseys to the game,
will be admitted free if ac
companied by their coach.
The teams will be recognized
at halftime.
Ron Ellis scored two goals for
the Maple Leafs, who are hang
ing on to fourth place in their
struggle with Buffalo for the
final Eastern Division playoff
position for the Stanley Cup.
Jacquesßichard scored Atlan
ta’s first goal and Rey Comeau
got the Flames’ final score,
breaking a streak of 27 goal -
less games for him.
The Flames also are fighting
for a playoff berth, but their hold
on fourth place in the Western
Division is getting precarious.
Atlanta has 44 points to 42 for
fifth-place Los Angeles and 41
for sixth-place Minnesota.
lead in the first quarter and led
all the way, although the Hawks
railed to within five points at
65-60 early in the third quarter.
But Frazier scored twice and
Bill Bradley once to get the
Knicks off and running again.
“Frazier can control a game
better than anyone in the NBA,”
said Atlanta Coach Cotton Fitz
simmons.
