Nearly wiped out
WASHINGTON -The $467,000 tax debt President Nixon
owes will leave him “almost totally wiped out”
financially and may force him to obtain a loan to pay the
bill, according to the White House. Offering a gloomy
assessment of the President’s financial picture, a
presidential spokesman hinted Thursday Nixon may also
have to consider selling one of his homes to meet his back
tax obligation.
Nixon gets ultimatum
WASHINGTON —The House Judiciary Committee
Thursday gave the White House an ultimatum to supply 41
Presidential tapes needed in its impeachment inquiry or
the committee will subpoena them. “We shall not be
thwarted by inappropriate legalisms or by narrow
obstacles to our inquiry,” committee Chairman Peter W.
Rodino, D-N.J., said. “We have waited patiently to get the
recorded conversations; we will subpoena them if we
must.”
Storm rescue work pushed
From battered cities as Louisville and Cincinnati to
wrecked, isolated towns as Jasper, Ala., and Rocky Point,
Tenn., rescue and relief workers toiled today after the
nation’s worst tornado disaster in a half-century. Five of
the 12 states hit, Ohio, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana and
Tennessee, were declared major disaster areas by
President Nixon and relief officials worked on the amount
and type of aid required there. The death toll stood at 339.
Scramble in France
PARIS —With the scramble already on for the job, the
French cabinet called new elections today for Sunday,
May 5, to choose a successor for the late President
Georges Pompidou. If no candidate achieves a clear
majorty, a runoff election will be held two weeks later.
Israel on full alert
Israeli and Syrian forces exchanged artillery fire today
along the Golan Heights front where Israel was on full
alert against any surprise attack during the Passover
holiday beginning Saturday. The Israeli command said
Syrian shells hit near civilian settlements on the Golan
Heights and Israeli gunners fired back. A Syrian
communique said a Syrian infantry patrol fought off an
Israeli night ambush, inflicting several casualties but
suffering none.
Gasoline increased
WASHINGTON —Every state in the union will get
increased gasoline allocations in April of at least 90 per
cent of 1972 levels, Federal Energy Administrator
William E. Simon announced Thursday. April allocations
represent a 5 per cent boost over March, when states were
given 85 per cent of the gasoline they used in 1973.
House okays defense money
WASHINGTON — The House has approved a $668
million supplemental defense authorization after
rejecting a $274-million increase in military aid for South
Vietnam.
Younger brother called
NEW YORK — Counsel for two former Nixon Cabinet
members called Edward Nixon, President Nixon’s
younger brother, to testify in an influence-peddling trial in
federal court.
He was called to testify for the defense — if necessary —
in the case of former Atty. Gen. John N. Mitchell and
former Secretary of Commerce Maurice H. Stans. They
are charged with conspiracy, perjury and obstructing
justice.

British offer reviewed
LONDON — The Labor government is reviewing
Britain’s offer to extended air and naval base facilities to
the United States on the tiny Indian ocean island of Diego
Garcia.
Soldiers seal border
BELFAST, Northern Ireland —Newly arrived British
army soldiers sealed off part of the border with the Irish
Republic today in a pre-Easter crackdown aimed at
curbing violence in Northern Ireland. The action came as
British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and the prime
minister of the republic, Liam Cosgrave, met in London to
discuss joint moves to set up a Council of Ireland and to
end violence in the north.
