Deaths-Funerals
Mrs. Helms
Mrs. Myrtle Edmonds Helms,
62, of 931 Ray street, widow of
Mr. Lewis Gable Helms, died
early this morning at the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital after
a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Helms was a native of
Habersham County, coming to
Griffin in 1925 to make her
home. She was employed at
Griffin Division, Thomaston
Mills and attended the
Deliverance Center Holiness
Church.
She is survived by a son,
Argene Helms; step-son, Virgil
Helms, both of Griffin; a sister,
Mrs. Tommy Williams of
Griffin; two brothers, Otis
Edmonds and Lewis Edmonds,
both of Griffin and several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
2 o’clock from the Deliverance
Center Holiness Church. The
Rev. Kenneth Bell, the Rev.
Mrs. Margaret Burford and the
Rev. Fred Kendrick will of
ficiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill
cemetery. Friends may visit the
family at the home of Mrs.
Tommy Williams, 625 Moody
street. The body will remain at
Haisten Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Mr.
Walter Lee Collins of 1440
Beatty street were conducted
this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in
the Highland Baptist Church.
The Rev. A. G. Van Lan
dingham and the Rev. Hartwell
E. Kennedy officiated and
burial was in Griffin Memorial
Gardens.
Members of the Woodmen of
the World and a group of of
ficers from the Georgia
Diagnostic Center at Jackson
served as honorary escort at the
funeral.
Mr. Collins died Saturday at
the Griffin-Spalding Hospital.
Haisten Funeral Home was in
charge of plans.

Mr. Huckaby
Mr. Jesse A. Huckaby of the
Fayetteville highway died
Saturday morning at St.
Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr. Huckaby was a lifelong
resident of Spalding County and
a retired employe of Griffin
Division, Thomaston Mills.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Viola Phillips Huckaby; a
daughter, Mrs. Jeanette
Huckaby May; a son, James E.
Huckaby; mother, Mrs. Nellie
Babb Huckaby, all of Griffin;
two sisters, Mrs. Glynn Turner
of Fayetteville and Mrs.
Mildred Blanks of Griffin; four
grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at the
Mclntosh Baptist Church at 3
o’clock. The Rev. Bobby Watts
officiated and burial was in Oak
Hill cemetery. McDonald
Chapel was in charge of plans.
Rev. Chapman
The Rev. D. Roy Chapman,
67, of Route two, Highway 41
South, Barnesville, died
unexpectedly at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital shortly after
arriving there this morning.
The Rev. Chapman was bom
in Montgomery, Ala., and had
made his home in Barnesville
for 29 years. He was. founder of
the Good Hope Pentecostal
Holiness Church in Lamar
County and had a Sunday
morning program on WHIE
Radio in Griffin for 22 years.
He was an insurance
salesman for Liberty National
for 14 years and was with Costal
States Insurance for several
years, retiring in 1972.
His survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Ruby Culbreth Chapman
of Barnesville; a daughter,
Mrs. Faye C. Hammett of East
Point: two sons. Rov Lamar
Chapman of Forsyth and Gene
E. Chapman of Decatur; 10
grandchildren, two great
grandchildren; and a sister,
Mrs. T. W. Binford of Newborn.
Funeral services will be
conducted Wednesday af
ternoon at 3 o’clock from the
Good Hope Pentecostal
Holiness Church. Burial will be
in the church cemetery. Haisten
Funeral Home of Barnesville is
in charge of plans.
Mrs. Goodson
Mrs. Lydia Jackson Goodson,
85, of 1209 Hillwood avenue,
widow of Mr. Vern Clark
Goodson, died at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital early Sunday
morning after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Goodson was bom in,
Pike County and had made her
home in Griffin for most of her
life. She was a member of the
DeVotie Baptist Church.
She is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. George Grimes
of Atlanta and Mrs. Fred Cosby
of LaGrange; a son, Alton
Goodson of Griffin; a brother,
Fred Jackson of Griffin; four
grandchildren, seven great
grandchildren and one great
great-grandchild. Among her
grandchildren are Mrs. Dot
Chappell and Mrs. Jean Dent,
both of Griffin.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 2
o’clock from the graveside in
the new addition of Oak Hill
cemetery. The Rev. Benny
Rhodes officiated. Haisten
Funeral Home was in charge of
plans.
Mr. Price
Mr. William Pinkney Price of
116 East College street died
Sunday night after an illness of
several months.
Mr. Price was a native of
Farmington, Ga., son of the late
James Daniel Price and the late
Leila Wilson Price. He had
made his home in Griffin for 56
years. Mr. Price was a member
and life deacon of the First
Baptist Church and was retired
from the American Sugar
Refinery and the Department of
Labor Employment Service.
He was a veteran of World
War One, serving in the Cavalry
and was a member of the
American Legion and Elks
Lodge 1207.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Katherine Nichols Price; a
daughter, Miss Virginia Price
of Atlanta; a son, James N.
Price of Griffin and a sister,
Miss Maria Price of Waycross.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock at the graveside in
the old section of Oak Hill
cemetery. The Rev. Bruce M.
Morgan will officiate. The body
will remain at Pittman Rawls
Funeral Home.

officers and hear a discussion of
a school bond issue at its
meeting Tuesday night,
beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the
school. Several members of the
Griffin-Spalding Board of
Education will be on hand to
discuss the bond issue.
Shoplifting
suspect
Larry Wayne Browning, 129
Lamar street, Barnesville, was
arrested for shoplifting
Saturday when he attempted to
take about four items form K-
Way Food Store, police said.
The articles included ham,
peanuts, and cheese and were
worth about eight dollars.
Mr. Wilkerson
Mr. Leroy Wilkerson, 84, of
Milner died Sunday afternoon at
his residence after an illness of
several months.
Mr. Wilkerson was a
member of the Spring Hill
Baptist Church in Milner.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Pearlie Mae James of
Milner.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hampton
Mrs. Minnie C. Hampton, 65,
died at the Griffin-Spalding
Hospital Sunday morning after
several weeks of illness.
Survivors include several
nieces and nephews.

Home. Friends may visit the
family at the home of Mrs.
Jeanette Lamar, 312 North

Newcomers
celebrate
anniversary
The Griffin Newcomers Club
celebrated its second anniver
sary with a meeting at the
Moose Club.
Jack Smith was the guest
speaker. His topic was “Gar
dening and Landscaping Pro
blems”.
