Satellite hunts
ore on earth
By FRANK MACOMBER
Copley News Service
This discovery by Skylab
astronauts of a potentially
rich copper ore deposit in
eastern Nevada is only the
hump on the camel’s back so
far as prospecting from space
is concerned.
Because the ore deposit
eventually might yield up $lO
billion in copper, it attracted a
lot of attention. Less publi
cized but perhaps more sig
nificant is the space prospect
ing by investigators from Cal-
Tech’s Jet Propulsion Labo
ratory (JPL), Pasadena,
Calif., and the U. S. Geological
Survey.
These men are true pros
pectors, lacking only a pick,
shovel and burro.
Using multispectral photog
raphy and a computer, the
prospector-scientists have
sharpened pictures from
NASA’s earth resources tech
nology satellite (ERTS-1) in
their search for buried ore
and water in two parched
areas of the southwestern
United States.
They use a technique called
“computer image enhance
ment,” first developed by
JPL to improve early space
craft pictures of the moon and
Mars.
The method of prospecting
from on high was worked up
by Dr. Alexander Goetz and
Fred Billingsley of JPL while
they were sharpening the
focus on photos snapped by
the ERTS multispectral scan
ner. The satellite has been
circling the earth in a 560-
mile-high orbit since July 23,
1972, peering down at the
world’s natural resources.
The Goetz-Billingsley tech
nique already has identified
some surface evidence of
known mineral deposits —
mainly limonite (iron oxide)
— near Goldfield, Nev., and
discovered indications of
promising subsurface water
bearing rocks (acquifiers) in
northern Arizona near Flag
staff and the Grand Canyon.
Goetz heads a geologic
mapping team concentrating
on water problems. Other
members are Dr. Eugene
Shoemaker, Cal Tech geolo
gist, and Drs. Donald Elston

and Ivo Lucchitta, both of the
U.S. Geological Survey
(USGS), Flagstaff.
Dr. Lawrence Rowan of
USGS is the principal investi
gator for the mineral deposit
experiment to which Goetz
and Billingsley are contribut
ing their expertise. Billings
ley is a computer expert who
has achieved much to im
prove space photography.
“We already have proved
the ability of the ERTS imag
ing system to detect known
mineralized zones and we
hope to extend our findings to
heretofore undiscovered de
posits,” says Goetz. This was
one of the USGS goals for the
Interior Department’s ERTS
program to study natural re
sources and the environment
from space.
Goldfield, just south of To
nopah, Nev., was selected as a
primary test area for the new
sky-high prospecting tech
niques. A prolific gold-mining
region 60 years ago, Goldfield
virtually has exhausted its
once-rich ore deposits. Its
slide into ghost town status
can’t be halted by the ERTS
photos, but Goetz says the
area could provide a mother
lode of scientific information
helpful in locating new ore de
posits elsewhere.
“Ores can’t be detected di
rectly by the ERTS cam
eras,” he explains. “They
can’t see beneath the top mil
limeter of the earth crust, and
in nearly all cases ores lie
buried.
“What we look for, then, are
secondary indications, such
as hydrothermal alteration
products (minerals which V
formed on the surface by long
geological seepage).
