Mrs. Hearst can’t believe
Patricia was in bank holdup
LA PAZ, Mexico (UPI) -
The mother of Patricia Hearst
said today she cannot believe
her daughter took part in the
SIO,OOO holdup of a San
Francisco bank.
“I’m so upset I can’t talk to
you,’’ Mrs. Randolph Hearst
said. “We just heard it over the
radio. It’s so bizarre. I can’t
believe it. Please leave us
alone.’’
The FBI said Miss Hearst
was being sought as a material
witness in connection with
Monday’s holdup of a branch of
the Hibernia Bank. Two by
standers were shot during the
robbery.
Earlier, Miss Hearst’s mo
ther, Catherine, said she and
her husband “were still as
convinced as ever that our
daughter has not been convert
ed to the revolutionary philoso
phy that those terrorists
represent.’’
She added, however, “We
don’t know anything at all
about the techniques involved
in brainwashing. That’s some
thing highly professional in the
field of psychiatry, I believe.”
Mrs. Hearst was in
Cruces with her husband,
president and editor of the San
Francisco Examiner; two other
daughters, a son-in-law and a
grandson.
The Hearsts were expected to
return soon to their home in
Hillsborough, Calif.
Authorities said they identi
fied the 20-year-old Miss Hearst
from photographs taken of four
rifle-toting women by a hidden
camera inside the bank.

Egypt warns
of new fighting
By United Press International
Egypt warned today of new
fighting in the Sinai Desert
unless Israel finds away to end
the escalating war of attrition
with Syria along the tense
Golan Heights truce lines.
The Egyptian warning came
after Israeli and Syrian forces
clashed for control of the
strategic slopes of Mt. Hebron
Monday in the 35th consecutive
day of fighting along the Golan
Heights.
The semi-official Cairo news
paper Al Akhbar said Israel
should not count on Egyptian
guns to remain silent if the
fighting with Syria continues.
“Israel cannot remain with
one Arab front to concentrate
on,” the authoritative newspa
per said. “The time when
Israel was able to practice this
method has passed.”
Egypt and Israel agreed
earlier this year to separate
their forces along the Suez
Canal. Secretary of State Henry
A. Kissinger, architect of the
accord, has been trying to work
out a similar pact with Syria.
Israeli Defense Minister
Moshe Dayan visited snow
capped Mt. Hermon, a 9,000-
foot peak straddling Lebanon,
Israel and Syria, Monday for a
first-hand view of the latest
fighting.
At one point, the Syrian
bombardment of Israeli posi
tions on the mountain, which
commands a 100-mile view of
surrounding territory, became
so intense Dayan was forced to
take shelter in a bunker.

The Israeli military com
mand reported two soldiers
wounded in Monday’s shelling,
which started early in the day
and lasted until 7 p.m.
“It’s still a war,” one Israeli
soldier at the scene said. “I
can’t see an end to it in the
near future.”
Israeli forces regained con
trol of Mt. Hermon during the
last days of the 1973 Middle
East War after losing much of
the peak at the start of the
fighting.
