I Fiance
I u/ants
I emerald
By RIV TOBIN
Copley News Service *
Dear Mrs. Tobin:
My fiancee’s birth stone is
the emerald. She would like *
this gem instead of a diamond
1 in her engagement ring. Is
this proper? — Jack Mcß.
Dear Jack:
I It is perfectly proper. Give
|l the lady what she wants.
*
Dear Mrs. Tobin:
My parents, 60 and 62, have
S just purchased cemetery plots
— complete with headstones. ,
All that is needed is the dates
J of their death. Don’t you think
this is ghoulish? — Not Ready
Yet ,
Dear Not Ready:
It’s not my cup of tea, but I
must say they are planning
ahead. ~ •
Dear Mrs. Tobin:
Our boat has been desig

will be guests of our yacht

our duties be? — Captain’s •

Dear Captain’s Mate:
Aside from any instructions
from the club commodore or ’
the yachting committee, you
should make yourself avail

times. Will the visiting crew *
need ground transportation?
A clothes washer and drier?
Dry-cleaning facilities? A
| mechanic? Marine supplies? •
Dry docking? Medical or
dental attention? Galley re
stocking? Would they appre
ciate a real bed for a night? *
Think about what you’d like
them to do for you when you

Floods leave
I 70,000
homeless
FORTALEZA, Brazil (UPI)
— At least 70,000 persons are - 0
homeless and at least seven
persons dead from floods that
continue to devastate the
northeastern state of Ceara, •
Gov. Cesar Cals said Tuesday.
Torrential rains have con
i’ tinued without letup since the
weekend.
Large portions of the city of
Iguatu in southern Ceara were
beneath the waters of the ,
Jaguaribe River, forcing ap
proximately 10,000 persons to
flee the city.
The neighboring cities of •
Limoeiro do Norte, Jaguaribe
and Arati have were partially
I flooded and the road that links (
the southern region of Ceara to
its capital, Fortaleza was
closed.
The city of Alto de Rodrigues, ,
some 25 miles from Natal,
capital of the state of Rio
Grande do Norte, became an
island after the Arari river ’
| flooded large portions of that
city.
New hard
material
n
developed
LOS ANGELES (UPI) - A
UCLA researcher announced
today that he had developed the
second hardest material in the
world, after diamonds.
The discovery is “easily the ’
most startling material deve
lopment in recent years,” a
UCLA spokesman said of the
work by Prof. Rointan F.
Bunshah, an engineering re
searcher.
The material is called titani
um carbide, and it can be
produced at one-hundredth to
one-thousandth the cost of
producing commercial grades
of synthetic diamonds, for such
uses as power drills, turbine
blades, jet engines, heavy
industrial cutters and other
machinery uses, the UCLA
announcement said.
The regents of the university
have taken the patent on the
vapor deposition process by
which the material is formed.
The metal titanium is vapo
rized by an electrical beam in a
vacuum chamber, and the
atoms combined with a hydro
carbon gas to form titanium
carbide, which can be con
densed and deposited at a rate
of up to one-thousandth of an
inch per minute, as a super
? hard coating, the announcement
■ said.
