Griffin girls exhibit
in state flower show
Lucinda Crouch, Nancy Blake
and Diane Dunaway will
represent the Redbud District
in the Junior Section for the first
statewide flower show spon
sored by the Garden Club of
Georgia.
The giant show opened today
at the exhibition hall of the
Atlanta Stouffer’s Inn. It will
run through tomorrow and be
open daily from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m.
The entry from the Rosebud
District, which includes the
counties of Heard, Coweta,
Troup, Meriwther, Harris,
Talbot, Fayette, Clayton,
DeKalb, Henry, Rockdale,
Butts, Newton, Monroe, Lamar,
Pike, Upson and Spalding, will
be in competition with entries
from six other districts.
Griffin’s juniors were
selected by district officials
because state leaders were
impressed with their ex
ceptional ability demonstrated
at the annual fall flower show,
sponsored by the Federated
Garden Clubs of Griffin and
Spalding County.
Diane Dunaway won the
award for the outstanding ar
tistic entry in the junior division
in the 1973 show. Nancy Blake
won the same award in the 1972
show and Lucinda Crouch won it
in 1971.
Magic show
benefit
planned
A benefit magic show and
children’s movie, with the
proceeds going to help send
Griffin retarded children to
summer camp, have been
scheduled for Saturday, April
27, at the Parkwood Cinema.
The event is being sponsored
by the Griffin Jaycettes and will
feature Magician Ted Lashley
of Barnesville. There will be
two shows, beginning at 2 and 4
p.m.
The proceeds will stay in
Griffin and will help retarded
children from this community
only.
Tickets are 75-cents for
children and $1.25 for adults.
They may be purchased from
Mrs. Dayle Harris or any
Jaycette member and from
Kathy Windom, president of the
Youth Association for Retarded
Children, and YARC members.

The theme for the state show
is “The Art of Nature.” The
Griffin girls’ entry will develop
the idea that nature’s beauty
can be enhanced by the proper
use of the principles of design,
developed through study and
practice. Each will recreate her
prize winning design as part of
the exhibit.
Franchise
purchased
Wilson Cooper and Bob
Bailey, Griffin businessmen,
have purchased the GMC truck
franchise from Jimmie
McGhee.
The name of the business will
be changed from Jimmie
McGhee Auto Sales to McGhee
GMC. Inc.
It will continue to operate at
the South Hill and Poplar street
building.
Cooper, a former First
National Bank of Griffin em
ploye, will be active in
management of the business.
Bailey will be a non-active
partner.
McGhee will continue with the
firm for a while.

Thieves
continue
to prowl
Some $153 worth of groceries
were stolen during a burglary
last night at Bishop’s Grocery,
416 South Ninth street.
Police said a storage room
was broken into and the missing
food included a bushel of turnip
greens, cucumbers, tomatoes,
oranges, five bushels of a
variety of vegetables and five
cases of eggs.
Officers Ben Giles and Wally
Brown discovered a burglary at
Langford’s Fina Station, 1703
North Expressway. They were
checking the building and found
a broken window. A small
amount of change was missing,
A front end tool was stolen in
a breakin at Whiten Auto
Service, 426 East Taylor street,
last night.
Someone broke into Down
town Shell Service Station, 235
East Taylor, and damaged the
cash register and attempted to
open it.
George Montgomery, 511
Grandview drive, told police a
boys 10-speed bicycle was stolen
from his residence. The bike
was blue with a white seat and
had white tape on the handle

Griffin man
low bidder
on camp job
Don Watts of Griffin sub
mitted the apparent low bid for
construction of a troop service
building at Camp Thunder.
It will be the first step in a
long range replacement and
modernization program at the
Boy Scout Camp.
Watts’ bid was for $17,200,
according to Chairman Ralph
Reddick of the development
program.
The building will be 1,339
square feet and include an
equipment issue, storage area
and trading post. It will be
made of concrete block with a
concrete floor and a wood roof.
Completion is expected by
June 7 in time for the opening of
summer camp.
Fire destroyed the wooden
gym and service building at the
camp in the fall of 1973.
A fund-raising program is
under way for $300,000 for long
range development of buildings
at the camp.
Shivers gets
scholarship
David Eudon Shivers, high
school senior from Williamson,
Ga., received a $250 scholarship
from News Election Service
(NES) on behalf of the Georgia
Ordinaries Association.
The award was presented at
the 18th annual Georgia Or
dinaries Institute at the Univer
sity of Georgia campus in
Athens.
The awards were earned by
the ordinaries through their
cooperate efforts in reporting
vote totals to NES during the
1972 general election.
NES is the organization
established by five major news
gathering organizations to
tabulate returns from
President, senator, governor
and U. S. House races.
Shivers hopes to study
journalism at the University of
Georgia.

Wildwood Baptist Church will
hold a weekend revival,
beginning April 19-21. The Rev.
David Ramey of the Hillside
Baptist Church in Palmetto will
conduct the services. Special
music will be featured at each
service. Services will begin
each evening at 7:30 p.m. The
Rev. Guy Starrett is the pastor.

7:30 p.m. Third grade students
will present the program.

Mr. Gill
Funeral services for Mr.
George Thomas Gill, Sr., 70, of
The Rock were conducted
Sunday afternoon from the
Coggins Funeral Home chapel
in Thomaston. The Rev. Ralph
Mcßroome officiated and burial
was in the Meansville cemetery
in Pike County.
Mr. Gill, a native of Pike
County, died Friday. He was a
service station operator.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Irene Gill; six daughters,
Mrs. Lucy Edna Blount, Mrs.
Margie Johnson, both of San
dersville, Mrs. Marvell
Shepherd of Meansville, Mrs.
Martha Carver of Fayetteville,
Mrs. Betty Ruth Masdon of
Zebulon and Mrs. Sue Eppinger

Thelma Carolyn Harper Gray of
Haralson will be conducted
Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock
in the Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran
Church in Haralson. The Rev.

and burial will be in the Senoia
cemetery.
The body will remain at
Haisten Funeral Home.
Mr. Davis
Mr. Roy Davis of Clifton,
Tex., died Tuesday afternoon
following a lengthy illness.
Among his survivors is a
secretaries from member
schools.
Funeral services will be
conducted Thursday in Clifton.
Mr. Garland
Mr. Northern Garland of
Hampton died this morning at
the Griffin-Spalding Hospital
after an illness of two weeks.
Survivors include a sister,
Mrs. Alberta Patterson of
Hampton.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United

Newt Gingrich, Republican
candidate for the Sixth
Congressional District seat held
by Democrat Rep. Jack Flint,
will speak at a Spalding County
Republican meeting tonight at
7:30 at the Chamber of Com
merce on West Taylor street.

Pulaski Chapter, Daughters
of American Revolution will
hold its meeting Thursday
afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the
Memorial Clubhouse. Mrs. H.

awards, will be in charge of the

outstanding ROTC student of

New bank
at Thomaston
The new West Central
Georgia Bank in Thomaston
will have a grand opening this
week. The president is Alex
Stewart, formerly of Griffin. He
was associated with The Bank
of Griffin and later was
president of the bank at Con
cord.
The West Central Bank is
operating out of remodeled
quarters previously occupied by
the Thomaston Federal Savings
and Loan Association on the
courthouse square in
Thomaston.
Stewart said the bank hopes
to be able to move into the
building being constructed for
its new home within 12 months.
It will be on the North Ex
pressway.

Griffin High council
seeks state top post
The Griffin High School
Student Council will be a can
didate for President School of
the Georgia association of
Student Councils at the state
convention, May 9-11 at Rock
Eagle.
The President School is an
office held by a school’s Student
Council, not be an individual.
At the state convention
delegates from the Griffin High
Student Council will campaign
for this school honor. Glynn
Academy of Brunswick and
Morrow High School of Morrow
are candidates for the President
School also.
Duties of President School
include providing speakers for
Mr. Whatley

Clarence Whatley of the Work
Sample Evaluation Center at
Griffin Tech was guest speaker
at the Griffin Business and
Professional Women’s Club
March dinner meeting held at
the Griffin Country Club.
Mr. Whatley spoke about the
work sample evaluation
program which he heads at
Griffin Tech and about some of
his experiences as a teacher.
The civic participation com
mittee was in charge of the
program with Iris Lane as
chairman. The inspirational
was given by Iris Lane. Bon
nelle Brown introduced the
speaker.
Sixty-three members were
present. Guests included
Virginia Shapard, candidate for
the State Senate,; four of the
girls who attended the Youth
Conference sponsored by the
club at Rock Eagle, Saralyn
Ashworth, Jennie Owen, Debbie

Check
snatched
William Charles Smith of
Route Six, Tanglewood trail,
complained that two white
males snatched his wallet and
ran from the scene while he
was at Patrick Park yesterday.
The wallet contained a Gulf
insurance check and cash
totaling $312.17.
The incident is under in
vestigation by the Spalding
Sheriff’s Department.

The John Birch Society
was founded in 1958 by Rob
ert Welch. Welch named the
society after John M. Birch,
a Baptist missionary and
World War II U.S. Air Force

Steve Goodroe was promoted to
district field representative for
the Atlanta District by Proctor
& Gamble Company, Toiletries
Division. Goodroe is a graduate
of Griffin High School in the
class of 1967 and received the
BBA degree in management
from the University of Georgia
in 1971. He joined Proctor &
Gamble as a sales represen
tative in Nashville, Tenn, in
November 1972. He is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Goodroe of
Griffin.
CB Club plans
coffee break
The Friendly CB Club held its
monthly meeting at the County
Extension conference room.
Jerry McNally is president.
Plans for a coffee break, to be
held at the Griffin Boys’ Club on
May 11 were discussed.
A covered dish supper
followed the business meeting.
