ATLANTA — Atlanta’s Darrell Evans (11) is met at the

after Evans hit a two-run homer, driving in Lum, to lead
Braves playing better
than .500 baseball
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) - The
Atlanta Braves’ 6-5 record isn’t
impressive at first glance but it
picks up luster when you
consider that this is the first
time they’ve been over .500
since the 1971 season.
The Braves won their last
two games of ‘7l to finish at 82-

APPLICATION FILED
NEW YORK (UPI) - A
group of businessmen, headed
by promoter Mark Binstein,
Tuesday filed an application
with the American Basketball
Association for a franchise in
the upstate New York area.
It was not known immediate
ly whether the group was
required to post any advance
money to the league but it
expressed interest in exploring
the potential of a new franchise
in the tri-city area of Albany,
Troy and Schenectady.
No arena is presently availa
ble in that area.

came in the fifth inning. (UPI)
August of ‘72.
Atlanta got its sixth victory
and its third straight Tuesday
night by beating San Diego 4-2
but a Mathews pitching change
almost let it get away.
Ron Reed, holding a 4-0 lead,
was taken out in the top of the
ninth when he walked leadoff
batter WiUie McCovey. Reliever

three batters he faced to load
the bases and Danny Frisella
gave up a two-run single to
Dave Winfield before retiring
the side.
“I felt Ron was getting
tired,” said Mathews. “There
was a lot to consider. I realized
he wanted the shutout and the
complete game so I didn’t even
talk it over with him. I just
made the decision to take him
out.”
Reed, who used to get pretty
upset in a situation like that, is
a changed man this year.
“The most important things
are team wins,” insisted the 31-
year-old right-hander. “I got
tired, Eddie thought I should
come out. So I came out.”
The 6-foot-6 Reed insists that
this is a “whole new Braves
team this year.
“We used to be just a group
of individuals, now we’re a
team,” said Reed. “Eddie got
that through to me this spring.
You can’t compare us to last
year.”
Reed feels that the one Brave
who should get individual
publicity is Hank Aaron, who
didn’t play Tuesday night for
the fourth time in 11 games.
“Henry deserves it,” said
Reed. “He’s been a super
player. But the rest of us
should be concerned with only
how we make out as a team.”
Darrell Evans who hit a two
run homer in the fifth inning
came over to congratulate Reed
on being the winning pitcher.
“I should be thanking you,”
said Reed.
